For these students a novel and excit- ing school life will begin, and their thoughts may never again dwell on the memories of the present high school. But for some of us, these wonderful memories are unforgettable. This building, the joys and sorrows we experi- enced here, and the faculty and student body whose friendship was priceless to us--all these things will always be remembered as the foundation of our lives, the first step on the long road to suc- cess and happiness. It is the foundation of which we may all be exceedingly proud. Because we shall be the last class to graduate from this building, we, the Senior class of 1958, have chosen to dedicate this yearbook to our own Madeira High School. x A 1 7 get .ii fi? Helen Striiler Office Secretary paying bills, Madeira High School had its be- ginnings in 1921 on the second floor of the present Camargo School. There it continued until the fall of 1937, when the present high school building was occupied. Many alum- ni have nostalgic memories of the early years of Madeira High. Time has not stood still in our community, however. A rapidly growing population and greatly al- tered conditions have rnade neces- sary drastic changes in our educa- tional program and facilities. So now it is about time to move again to a different site and to a completely new school plant. With new oppor- tunities opening before them, the students of Madeira High will cer- tainly surpass in achievement the scholastic records of the past. W. People grow spiritually, socially, physically, and mentally at irregular rates. There are periods of sudden growth with peaks of changes of rate in all of the de- velopment of mankind. The entrance into high school is one of those peaks. The ex- perience of high school should stimulate spiritual development, promote social com- petence, encourage healthy physical growth, and provide impetus to mental improve- ment. Graduation from high school provides a 20 H. I.. May this yearbook be truly the symbol of replacing the old with the new, and may it be a pattern for future profit based on the experiences of the past. H. I.. Derlcks keeping records and attendance files, In a few days you, the Seniors of 1958, will come up the walks to receive your diplomas. On that evening many thoughts of bygone days will come to you. Surely you will recall all the things MHS has meant to you, all the things you have done for MHS. As you leave your niurk. your footprints in the sands of time, please remember that in the years ahead, you, as a person, will influence many people. And in your life-as in high school-because you are a pattern-maker, be sure you stand for somethingl Frank R. Lang 21 Fra-nk R. Lang B.S. in Ed., University of Cin- cinnatig M. in Ed., University oi Cincinnati. Sadie Merritt As you enter Madeira High School's busy office, the first smiling face to appear is the one of Mrs. Merritt. She handles very capably the duties of a good 'secretary and is always willing to help with any of the student's troubles. With a full- time iob and a family, she has little time left for her favorite pastime-reading. planning career nights and new schools. Since this picture was taken, Mr. Robert McKee has replaced Mr. Vedder as Vice Chairman. Madeira Schools Planning Commission, consisting of 21 members, is made up ot four faculty members, two members of the Board of Education, and fifteen residential members appointed by the Board. The Commission is daily studying many types ot school problems. Interested in providing a better school system for children in Madeira, the Commission has done a great deal of work on Madeira's future high school. The PTA at the high school has many projects that are planned to better our school for the students and teachers. Fine examples of its worthwhile aims are the scholarships set aside for some deserving students, and the contribution of sports equipment to the high school. It attempts to build its meetings around topics that-would interest any- one in the community. The planned activities help to bring a closer relation- ship between the parents and teachers tor a broader understanding of the students and their problems. Executive Board oi the high school PTA: Mr. Norman Tiffany, Mrs. Ulen Wallace, Mrs. Robert McKee, Mrs. Angelo Rotunno, Treasurer: Mr. E. We are depending on his coaching and help for our team next year. Mr. l-loffeld also coaches the track team and teaches the health classes and physical education. When asked if he had any hobbies the reply was that he spent most of his time in sports. What better quality could we ask in a coach! Dorothy Lyon A.B., University of Wichitag Eighth Grade Adviser. Medert B.S. in Ed., University of Cincinnatig B.M., B.F.A., College of Music. Madeira High School owes a great debt to Mr. Medert. There are not many teachers who would take the time and suffer the headaches that Mr. Medert has had to make the band and variety show what it is today. Music is his business, whether it be during band, music theory class, or a trumpet-playing date in evenings. Mary Parker B.S. in Ed., University oi Cincinnati: Tenth Grade Adviser. In coaching the golf team Mr. Wright, like many of the other teachers, helps promote the good sportsmanship of our school. Mr. Wright is naturally very much pleased with his house which he built himself. Iames Zarloy B.S. in Ed., Ohio Universityg Twelfth Grade Adviser. Zarley or Zeke, as he is often called, leads a dangerous life! She likes dramatics, is greatly interested in her home, and enjoys traveling during the summer with her husband. No wandering minds here! Remember how intently we listened to Mr. Wright? 26 Right: Eating is one of the favorite pastimes of all students. Here at Madeira we have five excellent cooks. The school has these ladies to thank for its fine meals. They are always striving fcr new ideas that will please students and teachers alike. Be- fore the holidays, Mrs. Stinson and her staff spent much time preparing their annual turkey dinner. Their friendly smiles and cheerful Words make lunch a pleasant time. Mr. Hoffeld is very popular with the teams. The l957-58 football Mustangs, with a new coach, a new offensive style, and a team composed primarily of underclassmen, truly showed the fighting spirit of a deter- mined and willing ball club. Although the record of the season is not impressive, the team' experienced a season as good as, or better than the two preceding years. With the great number of underclassmen on the squad, the Mustang's new coach, Bill Hof- feld, is hoping to build a powerful club for the future. 60 SCORES We Opponent They O Mariemont 33 6 Loveland O 6 Indian Hill 6 18 Little Miami 0 U New Richmond 20 0 Milford 26 13 Wyoming 52 6 Country Day 19 Below-Front row: Managers Charles Dimmitt, Dan Rusche, Eric Cartwright. The requirements are few, but each girl must be in her second year oi shorthand and must be able to type. The first day of every month is set aside for the members to devote their time to helping assigned teachers with such things as typing letters, making programs, or typing bulletins. We hope that this organization will continue as an essential part of Madeira's Business Education Program. l 89 -t Q fi r if ii 5 w paws. 1-QF E ima? Af vw. vi xx wx W S5 QQ.
