Virginia Military Institute University of Virginia Foreword The annual staff is very proud to present this, the 1955 edition of THE SPECTATORH. This is a picture story of your activities around school, your classmates, and your special moments. We hope you will be able to look back through the years at this book and be able to re-live each and every precious moment. This year as many of the students of Viaud are preparing to walk out into the outside world all of the students will forever remember the things they have learned and what their school has stood for in their life. For those who have graduated before us we feel we have benefited by your experience and gained by your knowledge. For those who remain behind the way is long and rough, many will be left, but when you get discouraged, remember the good will always over-shadow the bad. Also, we shall not forget Mrs. R. M. Cutshall, our principal: Mrs. L. B. Cabiness, senior sponsor: lVIr. B. E. Chewning, Ir., sponsor of our annual: and all the others whose painstaking efforts have guided our lives - putting our wishes before their own, devoting precious time and energy to the development of our minds, and our mental attitude toward life so that we may look to the future unafraid. It is the sincerest hope of the staff that this will truly be your book of memories. eniors of 1955 'I x TZ ff A ff ' 1 7' f ' 5' X ff M247 Wm e,?1 '-vii: QQ Q J QQ VE!! gm 0' U .J X , ' I H? f,, . The club is composed mostly of the boys that played on the basllet ball team. lt was formed with a great deal of help from Mr. Chewning who is the sponsor of the club. They held their first meeting to elect a president. Don Ramsey was elected to this office and took over the job of running the meeting. DON RAMSEY The Monogram Club planned an outing that was held at President Fishburn park. We had a Winnie roast to start with and ended the outing with a softball game between the club and a team formed from students from the school. This was truly one of the enjoyable events of the school year. As the Annual goes to press Viaud is looking forward to a season in baseball. The school has teams registered in the A, B, and industrial leagues of the city. f MON OGRAM CLUB First row, left to right: Roland Lawrence, Harry Moyers, Odell Waldron, Ebo Clifton. All the elementary department and Pat Duncan from the High School participated. May 20 is May Day. Together with the mystery of who will be Queen of the May, anticipation soars high. For the celebration takes place on the beautiful grounds of the Cutshalls country home. An original May Day play will be presented by the elementary reading students. Cast of characters is as follows: Earth Child, Patrician Ann Vaughan: Sprites, Daffy and Dilly, Beverly Carol Wood and Mary Nininger: Perky, Harry Palmer: Poky, Robert Cook: Jiffy, Gary Austin: Dozy, David Zimmerman: Odds and Ends, Calvin Parsons. Some of the students had been here all through the summer but most ot them were returning from those glorious summer vacations we all love. Everyone found it hard to finally settle down to work after all the play during the summer. The high lights of the month were the lectures given by the Rev. Steven Maithis, at the school and at THE STUDIO, and the tea given by Mrs. B. E. Chewning, Sr., at her home in South Roanoke. The tea was given to welcome all girls into the charm class. October October brought the opening ot the basketball season with boys from VIAUD and THE STUDIO participating. The season was opened by the game with Roanoke Marines Reserve. Games were played throughout the year with different leagues around the city. November Dr. and Mrs. Edward Monaghan gave a lecture on hypnosis at VIAUD and THE STUDIO. ecember This was one ot the biggest months around school. The Snow Queen Dance was held at the Buena Vista Center. The dance was formal and at 10:30 the crowning ot Phyllis Covington, the Snow Queen, was held. The Sunday before Christmas, the students went down to the Villamont Presbyterian Church. The choir of VIAUD presented a program of Christmas carols and the sermon was delivered by Mr. B. E. Chewning, Ir. After the ser- vice the students were invited to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cutshall's home for lunch. Also, this month a play was presented at the FLOYD WARD SCHOOL of DANCING. Two students from school, Pat Ireland, and Pat Duncan, had leading parts. This could also be called The Matrimonial Month. Three of our students were married, Pat Ireland, Pat Duncan, and Furman Walker. January Many new students entered school and a breakfast was given at the school to welcome them. Rader Lewis, Vice-President of the senior class, gave the welcome. A reception was held at school for the parents and the students. This was so the teachers, new students, and their parents could become acquainted. Refreshments were served and everyone had an informal good time. February A tea was held at school for Mrs. B. E. Chewning, Sr., charm class sponsor. She was unable to be present and was missed by everyone. Valentines were passed out to the students and refreshments were served. The pictures from the studio arrived and everyone got to see how they really look! Two students from school were married. Tean Revnolds and Lucin- White March Reverend Holmes, a former graduate of Viaud, came back to the school and opened Lent Season. The school was glad to welcome a former student back. A shower was given by the charm class for Mrs. Iean White. Refreshments were served and everyone had fun. The Shower was given at the home of Mrs. B. E. Chewning, Sr. The basketball team also had a game at the Marine Armory and an informal dinner afterwards at the Buena Vista Center. Dancing followed. This was also the opening of the baseball season. Viaud and the Studio had teams registered in the A, B, and Industrial leagues. AprH This month brought something which the students had been waiting for a long time - a vacation. The day we got out, a luncheon was held at the school. lames Downs, and Garland Denny, February graduates were married to girls outside school. Margaret Thomas, a 1954 graduate married Garland Denny. The Monogram Club had an outing at Loch Haven. It was attended by Monogram Club members and their dates. May Day was held at Mrs. Cutshall's home. The May Queen was crowned and a picnic followed. An outing was also held for the history and Civics classes at Loch Haven. June This brings the end of school and for the Seniors, graduation.
