I VI A U D S C H O O L ROANOKE, VIRGINIA I954 The Viaud School was established in 1926 by Madame E. M. Viaud Madame Viaud is now Principal Emeritus of the School VIAUD SCHOOL Foreword Viaud School since its beginning has represented that which is highest, noblest, and best in ideals and scholarship. The School continues to hold up to you the same ideals and high standards of scholar- ship and honor. Those who have been your instructors have desired to acquaint you with knowledge -- a knowledge which will be able to perceive the truth and strive for that which is taultless and worthwhile. They have endeavored to guide you in making wise decisions for yourself. It is the sincere hope of the Spectator Staff of 1954, that, in years to come, as you hun back the pages of your life here at Viaud School, that this book may remind you that know- ledge is power and that the world has great need of the power that comes from knowledge and truth. The world is sick today, because in some parts of it so much power has fallen into hands that seem utterly unfit for leadership, and the aim seems to be the destruction of civilization. The need for leadership, wisdom, and character, is evident to the staff and, therefore, we can leave you with no better thought than a reminder that scholarship can be of great value to you in your later life. Your Alma Mater has started you on the path of right thinking. Continue your education it possible, for it may be of more value to you in the changed world of the Hydrogen Age. Wherever you go, remember, that Viaud and those who have gone before you are look- ing to you to hold to your ideals and take your place in seeking to better world affairs. Dedication We, the students of Viaud School, wish to dedicate our 1954 Spectator to Broaddus E. Chewing, Ir. Mr. Chewing, a new addition to Viaud, has stimulated interest in student activities studies, and not only has he been a teacher, but a friend to all. Knowing the undergraduates will find him as helpful as we have in the past found him we are now happy to dedicate this our 1954 Spectator to Mr. Broaddus E. Chewing, Ir. The Staff is composed of thirteen students representing the Viaud School. Senior members occupy the position as head of the departments, while, underclassmen assist and learn the work. Any student of high scholastic standing, who is interested in journalism, is eligible to the staff. The work is conducted as an extracurricula project in journalism, as the school does not have a journalism department. The book is planned and edited by students with the cooperation of the Viaud Educational Department. All photographic work, except senior portraits, is done by junior students who engage in it feel that the training and experience obtained is as valuable as that gained in any class which they attend. She has been responsible for the wonderful get-together every Thursday even- ing from 7:30 to 9:30. We know the under graduates will find our Miss Durham as considerate and helpful as she has been to us throughout the school year. We have memories of participating in the Church 'services in the Villamoni Presby- terian Church. Weiner roasts. picnics, and pot-luck suppers have added great memorable days to the students. Although we will always remember the fun we had in our club, we will also remember the seriousness it represented. The happiness in the faces of children at the Christmas party, and sayinguso-long'to the midterm graduating seniors as we sang at graduation. 1954 Senior Class Ufficers ELMER MILAM ANNETTE LEE President Vice-President MARIE BOOTHE MARTHA MATHENEY Treasurer Secretary We, Seniors MARIE BOOTHE IOAN BOWLES CAROLYN BRADBURY R. Remember the fun decorating, then rushing home to dress for the big night? Then on Thursday nights at Mrs. Meyers house the good times we had singing, pot luck suppers and gab sessions. Do you Remember the surprise party that some of the students gave Emma lean Shepard? The surprise and delight still shows. It got pretty cold when the furnace wasn't working one day this winter. Everyone turned to their coats for classes, and Mrs. Cutshall's classes, never a dull moment. Either she kept you laughing or else working hard. Decorating and preparing the float was great fun. Of course, some of the girls jeans were tight, and someone almost rolled the carriage over Sally Coleman, but it was great fun. Now to the more serious part: The students and faculty gathered and prepared a Christ- mas party, including tree, gifts and treats for all. We will never forget G. T. Hutchinson's portrayal of Santa. The reward for all the work was watching the delighted faces of the children. At the Christmas dance new talent was discovered. Mr. Chewing was sighted doing a fast rumba. Look what we have that Hollywood doesn't have. Then spring started showing in spots, and spring fever took hold of Viaud's Easter vacation and all its joys surrendered its place to the excitement of the graduating class.
