In Tribute 1903-1978 Dr. Thomas Martin Adams a native of Elberton, Georgia, was a well respected man in the Maco n County area. He made many con- tributions that will long be remem- bered. “Dr. Tom,” as he was called by his many friends and associates practiced medicine in Macon County for 49 years. He and Dr. Fred Adams, an unrelated friend, ran the Macon County Clinic for many years. Dr. Tom was active in Montez- uma government. He was a mem- ber of City Council from 1953 to 1976 and he was Mayor of Montez- uma from 1976 to 1977. Macon County High School will always be indebted to him. Dr. Tom attended practically all football games and was the athletic physi- cian. Because of this and many other contributions to the commu- nity Tom Adams Field was named in his honor. On January 13, 1978, the Geor- gia House of Representatives adopted a resolution commending Dr. Tom for his service to Montez- uma, Macon County, and the State of Georgia. Cheer Leaders Jones Barbara Washington, Roxane Fountain, Ginger Crawford, Sandra Washington, Amanda Neill, Becky Woodruff Bulldog Football to This year was not one of the Bulldogs’ best. In fact, it was our first losing season in fourteen years. However, their record was more a result of inex- perience and scheduling than of inability. Coach Maffett's charges were Pie al sadly depleted last year = = sss by graduation. Also, we moved up two classifica- tions into AA. The region competition was decid- edly tougher. There were many bright spots though, and the season closed with an impressive Homecom- ing victory over the Tri- County Eagles. oe Tee ll mes 2 Although the season as a whole didn't meas- ure up to Bulldog stand- ards, there were some outstanding individual performances. Willie Colbert, Bulldog fullback, rushed for over 1,000 yards this season, giving him the third high- est single season total in Bulldog history. Edward Jackson, a wide receiver, caught three Keith Martin aerials for touchdowns in the Homecoming win over Tri-County, setting a record in the process. The Bulldog defense should be congratulated for their stingy perform- ance this year. They only allowed 13.4 points per game through a total team effort. re Me ct La ws Neh aN, : Pan Head Coach — Jimmy Maffett, Captain — ’ ee = babeeiagt LS Bae Set tat og, EE ae Ca Sig H . - A POF PL ARETE.) = HE al stn Bi ree. — . = 3p APS. wat ae oer TO me ep Oey — Prat al e,4 Fy ee ae i Nee First row: Robert Pinckney, Perry Pryor, Michael Rumph, Willie Cobert, Jeffrey Smith, Nathaniel Tookes Edward Jackson, Michael Harmon, Daryl Byron, Carlton Greene, Keith Martin, Terry Pryor. Antoinette Keene was a partici- pant in the Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) program, held at Georgia Tech. She learned of the various opportunities and available careers in the field of engineering. 1978 Certificate Of Merit Recipients Left to right: Robbie Ray, Jamie Carroll, Kim Oldham, Carlton Greene, Antoinette Keene, Kathy Hortman, Ambé Hall, Phyliss Keene, and Alonzo Jones. DAR Citizenship Award: Carla Meadows Each year the State Department of Edu- cation recognizes the top 5% of all state high school's junior class. The Certificate of Merit is an award for outstanding aca- demic achievements during the recipients’ first three years of high school. The DAR Citizenship Award is given by the Daughters of the American Revolution to a high school senior in recognition of good citizenship, academic achievement, and good sportsman-like conduct. This year the Georgia Association of Educators sponsored a county wide essay contest. Three judges then selected the top five essays. GAE essay winner: Jamie Carroll Each year the Flint Electric Cor- poration, a rural cooperative, spon- sors an essay and speech contest for high school juniors. A teacher from each participating school is selected to advise the students on their grammar. Students submit an essay of at least 500 words on the topic of energy. These essays are judged, and two representatives from each school are selected to present their speeches at a district banquet, held in Warner Robins. The winner receives a five-day trip to Washington, D.C. With the smallest staff in Macon County history, the staff has produced the largest and most expensive yearbook ever. The staff showed their determination very early. Certificate Of Merit Nominees The Certificate of Merit is awarded annu- ally to the top five per cent academically in each Georgia high school’s junior class. Recipients are encouraged to participate in seminars and probes concerning their future educational plans. This year's nominees, left to right, are: Keith Martin, Cheryl Strawter, Amanda Neill, and Ray Tookes. GHP Nominees Acceptance into GHP, or the Governor's Honor Program, is the highest honor a Geor- gia high school student can receive. It is a seven-week program that brings together the best sophomore and junior students in the state. Annually, only one-fourth of all nomi- nees are accepted. This year’s academic nominees are Cheryl Strawter (English) (left) and Amanda Neill in mathematics (right) Math Team This is the first year Macon County has ever sponsored a Math Team. Members of the team will attend the state tournament, held at Georgia Southwestern College, and take a written examination covering many areas ot mathematics. The top two scorers from each team will then take a second exam, and all scores will then be averaged. Standing, left to right: Jamie Carroll, Beulette Hooks, Robbie Ray, and Kris Coogle. Congratulations Seniors BRINSON'S DEPARTMENT STORE Oglethorpe Editor's We approached this year’s book with a certain idea of what we wanted to accom- plish. You've’ probably already noticed the larger pic- tures; the fact that there are more pictures to a page; more pages, and the abundance of copy. We believed that such things as honors, sports, and organization's purposes ee ee ae needed to be explained. A yearbook should be more than a pictorial account of the school year; it should be a vibrant, living reference work as well. | believe that each member of this staff has uniquely con- tributed to this book. We had the smallest staff ever, yet we put out the largest yearbook in Macon County history. | would not venture to count all the Saturdays and afternoons spent at school. Besides the staff, | want to thank Mrs. Car- ole Barfield, Coach Peaster, and especially Mrs. Sherry Norton. Each of us sincerely hopes you enjoy this annual.
