WARRANT OFFICER ANTHONY MITCHELL A brilliant clarinet virtuoso who has been hailed by t t of the critics and audiences alike, through every s a e Union, WO Mitchell is one of those rare talented indi- viduals who is equally facile with the jazz or the classi- cal idiom. Performing in the dual capacity of solo clari- netist with the United States Navy Band and conductor of the Navy Dance Band, he became one of the origi- nal pioneers in television broadcasting, appearing as conductor and musical director of a weekly TV series that featured some of the leading artists of the day. Warrant Officer Mitchell graduated with honors from the Ui. S. Naval School of Music, and was awarded a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Catholic University of America. ln recognition of his ability and many years of dis- tinguished service, he was appointed Third Leader of the U. S. Navy Band with the rank of Warrant Officer on luly l5, l956. X xx. 2" i H 1 Q f-Sxg jgtgv ,rf 1. -st, SEA CHANTERS Named the SEA CHANTEBS by Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Arleigh Burke, this choral group has been a part of the United States Navy Band, Corn- mander Charles Brendler, Leader, since August 1956. The United States Navy Band Sea' Chanters were Organized in lanuary 1956 by the U. S. Navy Band's Assistant Leader, Lieutenant Harold Fultz. This select QTOUD Of YOung men have parlayed youthful exuber- ance and a solid musical background into a polished Fmt- EVGTY appearance ads lustre to an already glow- lllg reputation. lames R, Smith, the leader oi the United States NaVY Band Sea Chanters, hails from Petersburg, Virginia. Be- fore COXTHHQ into the Navy, Smith received his Bachelor of Music. and Master of Music Degrees from Westmin- iir Choir College in Princeton, New Iersey. While at C estminster, he toured with the iamous Westminster hon fer fOUT Years, including their recent world tour sponsored by the State Department, He was the student HEQUCCJGT oi the Choir on this tour.
