I' If The narrow and winding road crawls up and over the hill. From atop the knoll we see a plain, yellow with grain, a valley with shadows and mist, and carts with horses and donkeys pulling them on their clattering way. Beyond this vista, and rising higher than the tallest oak in the nearby forest, we see the Towers. The sight of them lifts our spirits and strengthens our limbs. We know that beneath them there is food and shelter. There too are the minstrel's songs of gaiety and of remorse, the ringing blows of the blacksmith, and the litany for the dead as intoned in the monastery. As life goes on in the present, the Towers remind us of the glories of the past. They are also like clarion calls announcing great portents of the future years-eras in which men will live better with greater understanding. Cul- tures and achievements will result that will become Towers in their own right. People will look to them, will be guided by them, and will be inspired by them. We at Macomber endeavor in this volume of the Craftsman to catch and to reflect the assurances, the adventures, and the thrills of life that Towers through the ages encourage all peoples to experience.
