From atop the knoll we see a plain, yellow with grain, a valley with shadows and mist, and carts with horses and donkeys pulling them on their clattering way. Beyond this vista, and rising higher than the tallest oak in the nearby forest, we see the Towers. The sight of them lifts our spirits and strengthens our limbs. We know that beneath them there is food and shelter. There too are the minstrel's songs of gaiety and of remorse, the ringing blows of the blacksmith, and the litany for the dead as intoned in the monastery. As life goes on in the present, the Towers remind us of the glories of the past. They are also like clarion calls announcing great portents of the future years-eras in which men will live better with greater understanding. Cul- tures and achievements will result that will become Towers in their own right. People will look to them, will be guided by them, and will be inspired by them. We at Macomber endeavor in this volume of the Craftsman to catch and to reflect the assurances, the adventures, and the thrills of life that Towers through the ages encourage all peoples to experience. Mr. Nissen is retiring this June upon the completion of thirty-four years as a vocational education teacher. lt is noteworthy to report that Mr. Nissen has been recognized as a fine craftsman in his field. In addition to his outstanding record of training students in Sheet Metal, our sub- iect has always taken pride in and has received much satisfaction from seeing his students obtain fine positions in their chosen vocation. A native of Lime City, Ohio, Mr. Nissen attended Woodward Tech, the University of Toledo, and The Ohio State University. Before becoming a teacher in Toledo, he was employed by the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad and by the Matthews Boat Company of Port Clinton. ln addition to his family responsibilities and civic duties, Mr. Nissen found time and interest to become a Thirty-second Degree Mason. He is a member and Past Master of Yondota Lodge No. 572, F. 8. A. M. Mr. Nissen's helpmate has been his wife Amelia. They are the parents of four children and they have ten grandchildren. Best wishes to you, Mr. Nissen, and may your heart be kept young by the devotion of your grandchildren, and your life more en- ioyable by the play of trout and bass at the end of your favorite fishing line. SUPERINTENDENT or scHooLs The doors of Macomber Vocational High School were opened for the first time in September, 1938. Since then hundreds of young men have passed through its portals. Macomber graduates and other former Macomber students now occupy important positions in the field of industry both in Toledo and other cities throughout the country. To be a graduate of Macomber is a mark of distinction. Students, past and present, have been a credit to the school. The educational standing of any school is determined by the quality of its faculty and student body. ln these respects Macomber has alwoys been a school of high rating. My best wishes to the members of the class of i957 and all other students of Macomber for their future success and happiness. E. L. Bowsher E. L. Bowsher Superintendent of Schools BOARD OF EDUCATION LEFT TO RIGHT: Thomas Bretherton, Raymond Di Baldwin, Mrs. June Kuebbeler. STANDING: Wayne Showaker, Edwin D. Dodd, ACTING PRINCIPAL Mr. Harry J. Baumker These are the morning announce- ments . . . . Considering the Towers of old, and the Towers of today, we have symbols of two distinct eras. The Towers of old were land- marks of strength and protection. They were usually a part of the fortification or wall, be- neath them lived the kings, knights, lords, and rulers of old. The Towers provided means of observing the approach of an enemy, they directed travelers so they would not get lost. Today we wish to think of Towers as achieve- ments which have been obtained through edu- cation, mechanical skill, scientific knowledge, and mathematical ability. Through these media we have developed atomic energy, radio, tele- vision, electrical energy, modern transportation, and all the other modern miracles which make our twentieth century so outstanding. These modern advances are the Towers of to- day, and, in every way, overshadow the Towers of old. We at Macomber like to think of our graduates over the past thirty-two years as builders of the Towers of today through the positions they have achieved in management, leadership they have realized in business and industry, and the distinction they have earned in their vocations or pro- fessions. We trust that the T957 graduates of Macomber will set their sights to a height that they will be builders of the Towers of today and tomorrow by achieving positions of leadership in their fields. W Do you think this would be the best way? and Macomber definitely will be represented. ASSISTANT Arthur D. Dlller Freshman-Sophomore Counselor Alvin C. Bippus Junior-Senior Counselor Walter A. Ardner School Achvuhes PRINCIPALS A most impressive sight as you approach from the valley below is the awe inspiring Bok Tower, located in the center of the citrus belt in Florida. The traveler promptly recognizes it as a symbol of strength and inspiration. To you Seniors, I remind you that the skills that you have learned and the friend- ships that you have made during the past four years will be employed as Towers of 'strength and inspiration, as you settle down to the business of making a living. I wish each of you a wonderful life as you use them in achieving success and happiness. To The Class of T957: During the last four years you have faced many problems. These problems involved learning complicated theories, mastering difficult techniques, and learning how to get along with other people. Allow me to congratulate each of you personally on the suc- cessful solutions you have made to these problems. lt is my earnest hope that you will solve the similar problems of adult life with equal skill. My very best wishes go with you as you undertake this endeavor. Z45Q5A55sw Your Towers of knowledge, character, skill, and personality should serve to give you a sense of proportion which will be useful throughout your lifetime. Attacking problems with energy and enthusiasm will, in a large measure, determine your success or failure in society. Aim your talents toward success. Remember, extra effort brings extra compensation. By your American heritage you are obligated to give service to your family, your community, your church, and your country. To give of your time, skill, and ability may require sacrifice, but your contribution will be more worthwhile if it is given in the proper spirit. Your preparation here at Macomber in the mental, mechanical, and social skills should supply the foundation for your Towers of future achievement. 451 FACULTY DEPARTMENT CHAIRMEN LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Esmond Whitney, Mr. Frank Drake, Mr. Donald Valk, Mr. Russell Bear, Miss Anna Schwertzler, Mr. Sam Harrison, Mr. Harold McCrae, Mr. Forrest Smith. Throughout the year they willingly adiust our schedules, give advice, keep class records, and attend to all business problems and procedures of the school. ln addition to doing their work so competently, we are glad that they take time to be our friends. We have learned to depend on their help and readiness to serve in times of doubt and need. Can you imagine what it would be like Jessie Bruggemier if a sign No Admittance were posted on the office door? Attendance Gnd The absence of so many vital elements to our school day Records would be severely felt. We would be lost and bewildered searching for answers to problems about our books, lockers, club meetings, money records, mimeographing, and mail. Few of us have passed the office doors without looking in. Always we have seen a picture of endless tasks being done efficiently. We hope that the girls will soon forgive and forget our sometimes inconsiderate and exacting demands, and will accept our thanks for all of their thoughtful and splendid services on our behalf. Toledo has become the Key to the Sea, and helping it along is Mayor Carl Mockensturm. His opponent in the last election was Allan Greer, former vice-president of Neil RandoIph's Health Co., which manufactures Pink Pills for Pale People . Our new city manager is Ray Hunt. He has already started a city council investigation, but with Tom Bridges, Jeff Cleary and Dennis Keith as council- men, it was only a matter of time. Heading a new committee on downtown parking is Dave Crofoot, and John Mosko. Their proposal is to eliminate sidewalks and buildings which hog downtown space. The police force had a mass resignation when Evan Pierce became captain. On his staff he has Tom McGarrity, Dale Lemle, and Tom Reed. City hall will never be the same after Gene Goncz takes over as iudge in Traffic Court. He has appointed Tony Groch clerk, and Honest Jim Pioida IOSP- 483659l treasurer. Recently Bunk Adams appeared for a speeding charge. His lawyer, Robert Mosley, argued that mistaking a route sign for the speed limit was easily done. They lost their case when it was found out that the route was I05. There are many television stations, largest being WICU, Channel One, owned by Mark Murphy and Son. On his station he has Jack Minke working as chief cameraman and Roger Sankowski, Richard Ragland and Dave Merickel as writers. One of the popular programs is sponsored by Brian White's Rest Home For Old Artists, which features a half hour of total silence. Another is The 94 Billion Dollar Question starring Leo Wilhelm. On the show was Fred Burke from Toledo. He missed the first question and received two million dollars as a consolation prize. Dean Solowin has a great business selling antique radios. Another newspaper has come into town with Anthony Falbo as the editor-in-chief. It is called the Daily Worker and sells for two rubles. On his staff are Paul Rehfeldt, Dale Kille and Phil Johnston. His paper is in the old O-I Building, now called Ron Schultz's Basket- ball International. Remember the corner of Huron and Adams Streets? It is now a parking lot whose attend- ants are Larry Gordon and John Jones. A new restaurant is being opened by the Dave Szyskowski Enterprises. Its specialty is homemade pizza, french-fried pizza and pizza ala Mode. On hand as headwaiter is Kent Bradford, and after hours he is a bartender at Jim Sieler's Wobble Inn. 18 A., - 4...s. Going down Madison Avenue, I see one solid block is a park. In the middle is a 20-foot marble and platinum statue of Ed Buy 'em by the bankroll Kerchevall. He and cousin Ken Kerchevall have an investment in the new super stadium in East Toledo. Tom Burmeister is their chauffeur. Another successful graduate is Steve Kaifasz who operates a chain of drive-in banks. With every hundred dollar deposit, you get your windshield cleaned free. Tom Ward and Ed Ogrodowski are operating a car lot specializing in custom Henry J's. Leaving the city, I drove on the new Larry Vergiels Expressway. He has lust opened this to the public, it was formerly his private drag strip. After going five miles, I arrive at George Regos' fabulous motel, where Bob Counterman is manager and head bell boy. lUnion troublel. Al Flowers is running a car wash right next to the motel. A little farther out I see the gleaming towers of the new Inter-City airport. Many Macomber graduates are employed here. Bob Beasley is head mechanic with Charles Felkey and Bruce Main as assistants. One of the latest planes is designed by Frank Shipman and Bob Watson. This new airport is managed by Ron Hanifan. He takes orders from his bosses Dennis Winckowski, Dick Demko, Jerry Gunn, and James Chlopek. Speeding back to the city, I am stopped by Dan Snyder and Richard Kohring. They are employed by the Radar Division of T.D.P. Finally reaching the city, I stop at the Bellner Hotel where Tom Achinger and Dick Utter have their offices. They've lust patented a new electric chair for home use. Entering my room, I pick up the directory to check a fact. Just as I thought, the population has decreased! But, looking out the window, I can see the Ken Horner Bridge and the James Sommers Building. Beyond these achievements appears the Kenneth Olsen Motors Corporation, which manufacture the OIsenmobiIe. President of this concern is Gary Stuttle. Dan Gast and James Smith are on the Board of Directors. Last year they did 52,000 worth of business. lf you look far enough, you may be able to see the new David Baron Co-Vocational High School. After Dave became a big head of Baron Steel, he donated money and land to build this and many other schools. Jacques Antoine has been ap- pointed principal with Joe Tesznar and Mel Russell as assistants. Well, that completes the City of Toledo today. Glad I live in Detroit. A great deal of time and pleasure, to say nothing of work, has gone into the making of this volume. Planning and executing the art and editorial assign- ments were Larry Pfund, Dave Szyskowski, and Brian White. Aiding these editors in a most helpful way were Bob Rudess and Tom Pickle. All attention and energy have been directed to give a colorful, simple, and dignified record of the events of the school year. A tremendous amount of aid and counsel was given the staff by these advisers: Howard White, editorial, Ernest Spring, art, Glenna Reinlein and Alvin Preis, business, and Robert Romberger, photography. It is proper also to remember the members of the Publi- cations Committee for their contributions. The students have shared fully in the success of the Craftsman, for their subscriptions gave the staff the go ahead for the production of an annual in keeping with that faith. l'l7 The staff prepares another issue of the Hi-Crier. The production of the Hi-Crier is a complicated process since the work involves all the students of the school. ln fact, the work is accomplished through the co-operation and team work of the boys in the senior Printing and Office Practice classes, the shop report- ers, the fine guidance of our Hi-Crier adviser, Miss Schwertzler, and Messrs. Goodrich and Romberger, Printing instructors. Macomber's Hi-Crier is iudged excellent in comparison with other high-school papers of the Northwestern Ohio area. The produc- tion of a school paper is a long, hard, continuous, and interesting iob. The production of the Hi-Crier is divided into four main parts and each one is dependent upon the other. These four parts are the composition, the make-up, the reporting and writing of articles, and the printing. Our paper's slogan, Written, Edited, and Printed By The Students of Macomber Vocational High School, fits the production to a T. Every student in Macomber is a reporter for the Hi-Crier whether he realizes it or not. Students elect shop reporters to write shop news for the paper, while the senior Print- ers and Office Practice boys are writing special arti- cles and doing special stories. After all of the copy, as the material to be printed is known, is turned in, Miss Schwertzler checks it for spelling, punctuation, and sense. From here it goes to the Office Practice boys who type it. They give it to the second stage of production. The second stage of production is the composition. The copy is sent down to the school printing shop where it is set on the linotype, and, proof read again for mistakes. When the type is set and there are no more corrections, it is ready for the third stage of production. The third and fourth stages of production are the make-up and printing. After all the type is set, it is locked into columns with the cuts lpicturesl put in the right places andthe headings in their proper order. After another check, the paper is ready to be put into the press. The paper lor the type forml is put into the press two pages at a time. On the first run, pages 2 and 3 are printed while on the next run, pages l and 4 are printed. Of course, if there is a colored picture on the front page, then the paper has to go through the press before the printing is done. After a sufficient time has elapsed to allow for the ink to dry, the papers are folded and distributed. The boys who work on the paper are always busy because, even after the paper is past their stage of production, they are already working on the next issue. Although things were rough sometimes and maybe the paper was a couple days late, it has been the aim of your i956-57 Hi-Crier staff to bring you the best and most informative high school paper in the city. The sixth season of football at Macomber showed that spirit and determination are not always enough. Lack of depth and speed plus iniuries took their toll of a team that deserved a better fate. ln game after game, the final result was dependent on one or two key plays. ln spite of the win and loss record, the team was described as being plucky and pesky against its opponents. Then too every city-league foe was up for the Macmen, for each contest was a key game since the final standings were not determined till Thanksgiving Day. The Most Valuable Player Award went to Ed Kerche- vall, one of the top scorers in the city. The Co-Captains were Ed Kerchevall and John Mosko. Ron Osterman was honored by his fellows when he was named the most valuable substitute. Dick Utter received a plaque from the Cornell Club in recognition of his being chosen the outstanding sportsman. ln addition to these awards, further honor came to players and school alike in the selection of Ed Kerche- vall, John Mosko, and Dave Crofoot to the All-City Team. . l Dave Crofoot End All City Second Team The coaching staff included Head Coach Robert Slovak and his assistants Steve Contos, Jim Krupp, Bob Case, and Jerry McCloskey. The man who cared for all of the equipment and for all of the aches and pains was Everett Cottle. Mr. Earl Kaiser aided greatly in his capacity as Athletic Director. Garland Jones and Dean Westbrook were student managers. Coach Slovak retired from coaching at the conclu- sion of the season. At a dinner honoring the team and coaching staff, Mr. Slovak was presented with a watch, and Mrs. Slovak was given a gift certificate by the student body. The students and faculty are deeply appreciative of Coach Slovak's efforts and record. Best wishes are extended for the future! To Steve Contos, the new head coach, and his staff fall the responsibility of teaching the game of life and the game of football to Macomber gridders in the future years. We know that these men will do every- thing in their power to have Macmen succeed in both. All Macomber's five wants this rebound All season long the spotlight was on the Macomber Quintet. As defending Champions of the City and of the Sectional and District Tournaments, the Macmen rated as the Team to Beat. The Black and Gold warriors proved their right to this sobriquet by win- ning the City Crown for the second consecutive year, and going on to qualify for the State Tournament at Columbus. After posting l2 straight wins over Toledo schools land 30 in a row covering a two-year periodl, the Craftsmen roared to wins over Woodward and Waite in the Sectional, eliminated Scott and Clay in the District, and then displayed outstanding team play in the Regionals to riddle Columbus North and Shelby, the latter led by All-Ohio Larry Siegfried. Macomber went to Columbus with a string of 22 wins to meet Middletown. ln the game with the vaunted Middies, it took a 20-foot iump shot by All- American Jerry Lucas that spread the nets after the buzzer sounded ending regulation play to send the game into overtime. From a 6l-61 count the Middies went on to win 70-65. The terrific effort by the Mac- men had everyone talking. Their brilliant play in- cluded a roaring comeback that had carried them from a I3-point deficit to a 7-point lead with l:l7 showing on the clock. At that point the Middies fought back to tie the score and went on to win. Enough cannot be said about Coach Ben Jeffery. His work evoked highest praise from his colleagues and Macomber fans alike. He developed each play- 136 Winckowski and Miller close in to take away the ball from Woodward's Jim Zak. A left-handed lay-up by Sfrozier helped out at the Woodward game. DISTRICT 1 it is s 1 ,., er's ability to the utmost, he taught the team ball con- trol and a rockbound defense, he tutored them to be gracious in victory and gentlemen in defeat. Aiding coach Jeffery were Bob Case, who led the Lightweights to a city championship in their own right, and Freshman Coach Steve Contos. The trainer was Everett Cottle. The man who helped to run the show and did such a fine job handling those tournament tickets was Athletic Director Earl Kaiser. The student managers were Kent Bradford and Leonard Griffin. The six seniors who led this team to a ranking of fifth in the State were Bunk Adams, George Miller, lke Strozier, Dennis Winckowski, Tom Reed, and Ron Schultz. Others on the team were Ken Bowman, Bill Taylor, Dave Baertschi, Dick Groch, Chuck Schroeder, and John Putman. Bunk Adams was named to the second All-Ohio team. He was a repeater on this year's All-City team, and George Miller was named to the second team. Bunk was also named to the honorary State Tourna- ment Team. ln addition to being captain, Bunk was named the Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Another basketball season has ended, and another Macomber team has earned tremendous laurels for itself and for the school. This team will remain in the spotlight of memories for its outstanding accomplish- ments and for the tremendous manner in which they were attained. 1 CHAMPIONS in Macomber executing the famous freeze . 1 A Miller on defense fights for a iump ball.
