Mooombor Vocational High School Tolodo, Ohio I9 56 CRAFTSMAN edication ln dedicating this volume of the Craftsman, The Senior Class of l956, in keeping with the spirit of Mr. M, wishes to honor one person to whom it feels the greatest portion of credit is due for Macomber's success, one person who has been closely associated with Macomber since its origin, and its only principal until his retirement, December l,- l955, Mr. F. M. Dannenfelser. After Mr. Dannenfelser was graduated from high school in his native New York City, he continued his studies at Columbia University, the University of Wisconsin, The Ohio State University, and the University of Toledo, from which he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. After working in industry for a number of years, Mr. Dannenfelser became an instructor in the Muskegon High School and the Hackley Manual Training School, Muskegon, Michigan. He was later employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: His outstanding record there attracted the attention of Dr. William B. Guitteau, then Superintendent of Toledo Schools, and Mr. Dannenfelser heeded the call to become the head of the industrial arts department of Waite High School. ln i922 he was made Director of Veteran's Rehabilitation Training, and then he assumed teaching duties at Libbey High School where he became head of its industrial arts department. After serving as head of the vocational education depart- ment of Woodward Technical High School, Mr. Dannenfelser was installed as the first principal of the Vocational High School in 1928. i Active in civic and professional affairs, our former principal has been much in demand for speaking engagements, leadership, and organizational work. As an expert in the training of supervisors and foremen, Mr. Dannenfelser has led several conference groups in management development for such Toledo firms as the National Supply Company, the DeVilbiss Company, Dohler-Jarvis, the E. W. Bliss Company, and the Acklin Stamping Company. ln addition, Mr. Dannenfelser has led conferences and study groups throughout Ohio for the Ohio State Department of Education, Division of Trades and lndustries. As a member of the Masonic Order, it may be noted that he is enrolled in the Toledo Commandery No. 7 of the Knights Templar and the Zenobia Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S. For many years Mr. Dannenfelser has given invaluable service as a vestryman of Trinity Episcopal Church of Toledo. Mr. Dannenfelser has made significant contributions of service to the American Vocational Association and to the National Association of Foremen, and he is a life member of each group. He is also a member of the Ohio Education Association, the National Council of Local Administrators of Vocational Education and Practical Arts, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Ohio High School Principals' Association. Two organizations in which he has taken particular interest are the Toledo Personnel Managers' Association and the Foremen's Club of Toledo. During his thirty-six years of service in the Toledo Public Schools, Mr. Dannen- felser has shown great zeal in the promotional and organizational work of vocational education in the full-time day school program, the half-time co-operative plan, which he inaugurated in l926, and the apprentice and the adult evening school programs. For his foresight, for his ability to analyze and organize, for his many achieve- ments, it is a privilege to honor this pioneer of vocational education in Toledo. His spirit, his enthusiasm, and his belief prompted the origin of Macomber Vocational High School. Mr. Dannenfelser-often called Mr. Vocational Education -has made the people of Toledo conscious of the needs and benefits of vocational training in an industrial center. He has shown his faculty and students that skill does pay, and that a craftsman should get things done right and on time. Mr. Dannenfelser, through his interest, achievement, and leadership, has made Mr. M of the past, the present, and the future a person of fine attitudes, high ideals, and outstanding accomplishments. Not only seniors but all students at Macomber should be proud to be a part of a great school that has done an out- standing iob in preparing young men to enter the field of industry. While Macomber is a comparatively new school, its graduates have developed a repu- tation in the field of achievement that is out- standing. The reputation of any school is a reflection of both its student body and its graduates. Therefore, each of you has a re- sponsibility in determining the future of Macomber. E. L. Bowsher Superintendent of Schools Beard of Education I LEFT TO RIGHT: Thomas Breth- T erton, Raymond D. Baldwin, Mrs. Jane Kuebbeler, standing. g Wayne Shawaker, Edwin D. A Dodd. rincipa Harry J. Baumker Acting Principal ,,. Since the building of Macomber nineteen years ago, Mr. M has become a tradition, but this in- cludes only eighteen years of his career in voca- tional education. Originally, the name was Mr. V for vocational education and it was not until Ma- comber was built and started that the name was changed to Mr. M. Prior to the establishment of vocational edu- cation on an all day trade basis in September, 1921, the only program operated was apprentice training. At its inception, the vocational education program was a department of Woodward Technical High School, llocated on the site of the present public library, the block between Michigan, Tenth, Adams, and Madisonl, and it was limited to three shops on the ninth and tenth grade levels. Each year more shops were added. Students who wished to finish high school transferred to the regular program at Woodward. A In September, 1926, vocational education became a separate program using the shop facilities and some rooms of Woodward Technical High School, plus office space and additional shops and classrooms in a new building at Adams and Tenth Streets. At this time Mr. V was born. The program included the operation of all day trade, apprentice training, adult education, continuation school, and it was coeducational. The girls' classes were housed in a large brick residence located on the east side of Michigan Street at the rear of the Masonic Te'mple. As the program expanded, Mr. V became more prominent. The all day trade, or vocational edu- cation, became a three year course for the ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades. A diploma was offered at the end of the eleventh year. As the era of industrial employment progressed, so did vocational education, and in September, 1936, another maior change was made and training was offered for three years on the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade levels- September, 1937, a special school for girls was established and Vocational High School became a school for boys only. September, 1938, a new school building was opened and the name was changed from The Vocational High School to Macomber Vocational High School, or Mr. M. ln September, 1948, the State of Ohio Plan for Voca- tional Education changed and our program became two years of vocational training, eleventh and twelfth grades, and two years of pre-vocational, ninth and tenth grade tryout and guidance work. Thus, the tradition of Mr. M is a true inheritance and legacy which each one receives, uses, and bequeaths. Harry J. Baumker Acting Principal Alvin C. Bippus Junior-Senior Counselor Walter Ardner School Activities Assistant rincipals Arthur D. Diller Freshman-Sophomore Counselor Congratulations, Mr. M, on the successful completion of your four years at Macomber. Mr. M is primarily a successful student-one who learns well the skills of his vocation, the related technical knowledge needed to apply these skills, and the general information which each of us must have to be an intelligent citizen of his community. ln the degree to which you have accomplished this basic task of high school, you will be prepared to meet and solve the problems of adult life. Now comes the time for you to use this knowledge and skill in meeting the chal- lenge of your life work, your military service, and your participation in community affairs. My best wishes go with you in meeting this challenge. May you always conduct yourself in the proud spirit of Mr. M. A. C. Bippus lt has been my pleasure for some time to work with the Freshmen and Sopho- mores, helping them over the rough spots, and giving aid in the selection of a vocation. During the Junior and Senior Years, Mr. Bippus has given you of his time and expe- rience till at last you are ready to become a part of that great troupe of men known as Mr. M. It is to you, Mr. M, that I offer congratulations for a iob well done. May your experiences at Macomber help you to find happiness and success in the years ahead. A. D. Diller One of the most important factors for successful living is the ability to get along with people. The Mr. M who has taken advantage of the numerous opportunities offered through active participation in extra activities has laid a firm foundation for his future. Whether your interests have been in student government, L publications, athletics, music, social welfare, good citizenship or vocational progress, your opportunities for self-expression have been many. The ability to assume responsibility and leadership ancl to cooperate with others is of vital importance in your progress toward manhood. Accomplishment in any of the various activities helps to develop your self-confidence which in turn results in self-satisfaction and greater maturity. ' So, Mr. M, may your success always be tempered with good sportsmanship, honesty, and loyalty to your fellowman. Are you surprised that it is being held in the Dale Graiczyk Building? Dale has made his millions with the patent on an electric beam used in aviation. The president of his modest little establishment, covering only two-thousand acres, is Robert Baker. Ralph Peters, Richard Fuss, and Charles Samson are on the board of directors. Upon entering the lobby we find that the chief ticket taker is Karl Haas and the program sellers are Louis Lowery, Dale Bryan, and John Martis. The first display features the new atomic one-man submarine designed for deep-sea fishing. The mad scientists responsible for this craft are Gerald Tippin, Alan Norris, Thomas Kern, and Jim Balmer. Their sales manager is Howard Campbell. Going on, we see spotlights focused on Esther Williams who is swimming in the new indoor pool designed by Robert Fledderiohann Enterprises. Thomas Creech is seen handing out sales literature, and Willie Grant and Paul Powell are doing some fast talking with two weakening sales prospects. After turning, in response to a slight tap on the shoulder, I pick myself up and see none other than Al Misko, Robert Tobian, Jim Adams, Wayne Went- worth, Jim Davis, and Gordon Denton who are studying for General Motors and selling Chryslers on the side. After renewing our friendships, I learn that Joe Mate, Joe Arthur, and William Delamotte have a successful advertising agency located on North Water Street. I am surprised to find that Fred Badyna, Jim Boyd, and John Pohlman designed the scenery for the re- cent Broadway hit Guys and Dungaree Dolls. This show is produced and directed by Bob Wimberly. After bidding them farewell, I realize I must phone Jim Day and Bill Ragans who live in Chicago. They could not attend this afternoon, but have promised to fly into town to-night in their supersonic iets. Both men are pilots for the Universal Air Lines. Heading this company are Richard Podiak and George Ritter. They will also be here tonight, but they have in- formed me that Ray Ritenour and Russell Hall, who are their Middle East representatives, cannot fly in from Instanbul because of the weather. Back once more on the display floor of the show, I suddenly realize that the svelte baritone of Lenny Sorosiak is sounding through the hall. He is appear- ing in the stage show that has Paul Mugler as its emcee. Appearing as world famous acrobats are Frank Pavlica, Paul Fairchild, Robert Bausch, and Gordon Sager. I saw their great performance ear- lier today. I also noticed that among the members of the band are Art Sandberg on the drums, Tony Repar, trumpet, and Bob Lee and Paul Werner fea- tured at the twin pianos. Oh Yes, the distinguished leader of the band is Wayne Heter. Also appear- ing in the show are Bob Kardasz who gives out with a souped-up arrangement of Davy Crockett, and Al Schatz, singing that old favorite The Teenage Prayer. If you turn down this aisle with me, you'Il be sur- prised and glad to see the latest in TV-phones. Working in the experimental laboratories of West- ern Electric are Don Goulette, Occie Burt, John Patroulis, and William Bittinger. I learned this from Jim Szczublewski, Julius Osstifin, and Marvin Kaz- mierski who are working here in the company's booth. Across from them we meet John Shipman, Bob Thrasher, and Homer Bell who have a new remote-controlled power mower on the market. They are kibitzing with the men from the next booth, Frank Wiciak, John Szabo, and Dave Tanner, who are proud of their new line of Atom-Iced refrigera- tors. Following their suggestions, we hurry to see the synthetic mustache wax that has been developed by Charles Tiller, Gary Emch and Bob Kertesz. This product is said to have revolutionized this industry. I also hear that John Murphy, Larry Grothaus, John Fisher, and Charlie Gormley have iust formed a business which specializes in power automobile horns. As we politely shove through the crowd, we edge our way to the concession stand for refreshments. We are served with a smile by Jerry Vasko and Jim Dale. Upon looking around, we spy a sign near an exit announcing the main people responsible for this fine show. The director is Dave Falkenberg, and his assistants are Paul Krasniewski, Roland Carter, Frank Sudek, and Pat Ryan. On the advertising and publicity committees are Roland Perz, Tom Poole, George Rose, Dan Contreras and Richard Kozak. Before I leave you, let me show you the booth where Dale Little and Bruce Simon are giving away samples of their new food product Crackees. Just beyond them you will see the new Kenneth Mays sports car that is being demonstrated by Harold Lake and Gary Rupert. Don't forget to call me the next time you are in town. So long till we meet again. Y , FRONT ROW, left to right: Dale Graiczyk, Gerald Tippin, Leonard Sorosiak, Al Misko, Bill Cook, Eugene Dubuc. THE STUDENT COUBT The function of Macomber's Student Court is to make this school as free as possible of rule infrac- tions that will hinder our fine educational processes. The court and all other Student Council Members can and must arrest all boys who break one of the court's Ten Commandments. The defendant is summoned to appear before the court. He is inter- viewed, accused, given a chance to defend himself, tried by-the court and iury, and given the verdict. The members of the court definitely derive much benefit from being members. Definitely, they take a small load off the shoulders of our counselors. They create an awareness among the student body of the responsibilities of a competent citizen in doing the right things only. The members have an opportunity to practice leadership. But above all, the members of the court, the defendants, and the student body are aware of the fact that another democratic function is being served in our school when court is in session. 53 , ,ws ' E155 Y 1 iii? The 1955-56 Hi-Crier staff has now completed the 29th year of the paper's operation. The aim of this year's staff has been to support and properly publicize every worthwhile Macomber Vocational High School activity, and to help promote good public relations between Macomber, other high schools, and Toledo organizations and industries. The Hi-Crier is an unusual high school publication, because it is written by reporters from all classes and shops, and, is printed by the Senior Printers in the school's Print Shop. Regular columns which were published this year were: Meri-Mac Man, a - column which was dedicated to a top-ranking student, lnquiring Reporter, a column for the opinions of the students and faculty, Answer Man, a column originated for students who sought answers to their questions, Exchange Excerpts, a column for the selections from our high school neighbors' papers, Pickin' the Platters, a rock and roll column, naming the top records for that particular issue, Korney Korner, a column of humor, and, My Opinion, written by a student who gave his slant on sports subiects. Other material which appeared in this year's Hi-Crier were: news stories, feature stories, shop and club news, poetry, editorials, and sports articles. The staff wishes to extend sincere gratitude to the many instructors and students who made contributions which helped to make this year a successful one for the Hi-Crier. One of the outstanding events sponsored by any Toledo high school has been the Meri-Mac Carnival. Since the early 1930's this activity has become bigger and better. Macomber students look forward to it each May. lt is an All-Macomber activity, for all of the students and faculty plus the parents and friends of the students turn in to insure its success. From the proceeds of the annual carnival have come athletic equipment, band instruments and uniforms, film proiectors and screens, books and instructional materials, trips for students, awards of all kinds, a public address system, and many other materials and equipment for all of us at Macomber. Students now at Macomber are benefiting as the result of past carnivals even es Macomber students of tomorrow will be helped by the work and success of the 1956 Meri-Mac Carnival. Carnival time has come and gone. Once again everyone who helped to organize and produce it, and everyone who attended it knows that he was united with others in one great activity for the good of Macomber. 8 Popcorn is a big item on the Midway The annual Meri-Mac Carnival always draws a big crowd. One of the main attractions is the Boxing and Wrestling Show. I better win this time! The spectators are equally fascinated with the camera as the mouse. n - - ,. With the conclusion of the fifth year of foot- ball at Macomber, it may be safely said that the other city-'league teams have learned that the Craftsmen are on their way up in this game of football. The spirit and the sports- manship of the varsity were never over- shadowed as the team contended against all of its opponents. The powerful line and the swift backfield working together were responsible for the fine record achieved by Macomber. One high- light of the season was the first victory over a fine Waite eleven, a perennial favorite in the city league. This win confirmed the general belief that Macomber has a very promising future in football. It will be the responsibility of next year's team to further improve the caliber of play. It took such a feat to mark the end for Macomber's cage team as it traveled the championship trail-a trail that had led to the championships of the city league and of the Sectional and the District tournaments. This team accomplished these deeds by playing until the oppo- nents faded. Time after time during the season and in tourney play our valiant lads came from behind to score the important points and gain startling victories. Coach Ben Jeffery's team proved beyond all doubt by its tournament play that it deserved the champion's laurels. After postinggtwelve straight wins over the other Toledo schools, the first time that a league team had done this since the i944-45 season, the Craftsmen went on to defeat Woodward, Central, and Scott in the Sectional grind. A rousing 60-42 win over Anthony Wayne in the District elimination sent the Craftsmen against undefeated St. Marys in the Regionals. Earlier in the season, after dropping a 46-42 thriller to Lima Senior in an overtime contest, the Craftsmen linked nine consecutive victories. The over-all record was twenty wins and three losses, not counting a victory over the Alumni. We are proud of the record of the I956 cagers, especially when we remember that they were counted among the last sixteen teams of the 328 Class A teams that started tournament play, and in the final Associated Press poll, Macomber was ranked tenth in the state. Individual honors came to the members of the Cramps when Bunk Adams, a unanimous choice, and John Szabo were named to the first team of the I956 All-City squad. The other starters, Al Misko, Mike Hollie, and Herb Scott, received honorable mention. John Szabo was chosen the most valuable player, and Ike Strozier was named the most valuable substitute by their fellow students. Three factors that stamped this team with success were its fine scoring punch, its tremendous defensive ability, and its bench strength. Ready at a moment's call to fill a breach were Ike Strozier, Tom Reed, George Miller, and Dennis Winckowski. Rounding out the power-packed roster were Ron Fledderiohann, Bob Thrasher, and Ron Schultz. Ably assisting Mr. Jeffery, who served his first year as varsity coach, were lightweight coach Robert Case and frosh coach Steve Contos. The student managers were Kent Bradford and Dick Britton. Another basketball season has closed, and another in- spiring chapter has been written in Macomber's athletic history. In years to come we will say, This was one of the finest! Thanks for everything, Team, and we wish you good fortune in direct proportion to the thrills, the success, and the heritage that you have given to all Macmen. Central was a stepping stone to the sectional title as Macomber bounced back after being down 15 points to win in overtime 51-49. Wow! Look what l've found! Jeff gives a defense on the spur of the moment. Such action won many games for the Mac-Men. Mike Hollie lays in two m o re fo r the Craftsmen. 22 It is apparent that this game is close. No baseball team answers that call to action more eagerly than Macomber's nine. Coached by Bruce Sautter, the boys that represent the Black and Gold always play with finesse and spirit. Last year's team was no exception as it gave the opposition keen competition until the final out. A fine group of veterans is returning for the 1956 season. Dale Graczyk is an excellent pitcher, and he is described as the hardest work on the team. Two other lads that ought to develop into capable chuckers are Ken Chechak and Joe Rybczynski. The infield may well include Ron Fledderiohann, Richard Fuss, Al Misko, Jerry Vasko, and Ronnie Schultz. Jerry doubles as a pitcher while Ronnie is very good at patrolling the outfield. Touted as one of the finest high-school outfielders in the city is Occie Burt. This lad hits as well as he throws and fields. Another outfielder of proven ability is Ken Kerchevall. While these players will be fighting to keep a varsity position, they will be challenged by Gerald Kufel and Tom Connolly plus several underclassmen. Many will be trying for the catching post where there is no seasoned performer. It is good to remember that the 1955 team won ten games and lost five. Its city-league record of six wins and three defeats earned it second place. In the sectional tourney, Macomber went' all the way to the final game before losing to Scott. With such a fine record as that, we hope that the 1956 team will be encouraged to hit and run right into the championships. 13 7 1 L YT' .. w . ,, ,.,,.... , .. wp!
