' AWA' 4 DEDICATION The Senior Class of Forty-Nine is happy in dedicating the Forty-Niner Craftsman to those pioneers in the new plan of voca- tional education, the present Freshmen. In 1952 they will be the first class to complete the four year course under the new plan which was inaugurated in September of this school year. The Forty-Niners find these newcomers a worthy group- assembled from the entire city and its suburbs -who have lost no time in catching on to the spirit of Macomber, and, indeed, in developing a new spirit all their own, as is shown in their eager participation in the activities of the school. We find them an enthusiastic group-interested in their studies and in the front in all the schools activities. Not the least of their accomplish- ments was the leadership of their class in purchasing subscrip- tions to the Forty-Niner. ln dedicating this Craftsman to the class of '52 we are confi- dent that they will carry on, to even greater heights, the spirit of achievement for which Macomber stands. ADAPTABILITY IN OUR MODERN INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY It is imperative that you, as students and graduates of Macornber Vocational High School, become more adaptable to the various situations you will have to meet and solve for yourself every day. This is absolutely necessary because of the modern trend, the tempo of the times, and the rapid changes taking place in our social economic system. How to adjust yourself, your thinking, and your actions to meet these situations, trends, and changes is what constitutes an educated, happy, contented individual, and should be your concern. You will be faced in the future with many changes in the production and fabrication of both old and new materials, by using better methods, in making semi-finished and finished products. This will require greater manipulative skill and manual dexterity in the solution of these problems: and, this mechanical skill is a valuable asset to possess. As you advance up the ladder to more highly skilled jobs you will discover that they become more technical, more scientific. To hold these jobs in the business and industrial world you will have to become more skilful in applying possess, the better job you should be able to obtain and hold. Technical Skill is of greater importance today than it ever was before, be- cause we live in a scientific age which enables us to produce the highest standard of living ever enjoyed by a people anywhere in the world. I And so, no matter how much manual dex- terity or mechanical skill you have or how qreat the scientific and technical knowledge which you possess, there is a type of skill of equal or greater importance, and that is Social Skill. You must always keep a balance between your mechanical technical skills and your social skills. By social skills, I mean your ability to communicate with and obtain cooperation be- tween individuals and groups of individuals. You live in an ever changing society, therefore, you too must become adaptable for it will prove to be a blessing to you and one of your greatest assets. Social skills result in better human rela- tions, and help you in the fine art of getting along well with other people. Learn well what constitutes Mechanical, Technical, and Social Skills and how to develop and use them in your your technical knowledge and information. The life- 12 M. AW file .r . li nu M' T -'- 39 ' FORTY-NINERS . . . SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY As the clouds separate, the year 1964 comes into view. Now we see a long, wide, busy street. The first building on the right is the Stambaugh Civil Air Administration building where Russ Coon and Leo Fischbach are general managers. Rol Gagnet tests all the new rocket ships expertly. There's Paul Newman selling a Piper Cub to Howard Hughes. That guy can sell'ANY- THING TO ANYBODY ANYTIME. From across the street we hear Billy Panos barking for the Shilling Bros., Panos and ParkerCircus. Bob Parker is selling the tickets. Bob Shilling just caught Paul McCarthy and Harold Adoline trying to go under the tent. As Frank Robinson and his Fresh Fish Cart pass before us, we see the Calcamuggio Spaghetti Palace where Ed and Dick Pasquinelly are chief spaghetti and meat ball bouncers. As we gaze upon a beautiful billboard which shows Lenny labs modeling a Toni ad, we are almost run down by Norm De Cant and his motor scooter: he is on his way around the world. We watch Gene Dauer rush into the new Paramount theater, where Lowell Rogers and Ted Clevenz are head pro- iectionists. ' Farther down is the Neitzke Nursery where the owner specializes in growing sweet peas. Next door is loe Patay selling colored glass straws in front of the Dick Greiser Amusement Park which is next to Rose's Ro-sey Welding Shoppe . Unable to see the amusement park because of Ioe, we see Eddie Ostapowicz and Vince Donofrio installing a television set for the Mayor of Tiffin, Ohio, the honorable Kenneth Kirchner. Eddie, by the way, teamed up with Ierome Lukasiewicz to win the l954 Inverness Invitational Go-lf Tournament with a 52. Now the Sports Arena comes into, view. It is owned and operated by Dick Smenner, who is featuring tonight a basketball game between the Toledo Collegians, starring coaches Dick Tittle and Rollie Engler, and the Minneapolis Lakers who feature coaches Nick Gangas and Don Rakosik. In front of the arena George Hurst is borrowing some money from playboy Roland Eggart to see the game. lim Seegert is polishing automobiles for Norm Rosinske and lim lagodzinski, who own and operate the Grinning Dukes used car lot. It wouldn't be Toledo without the Toledo Mud Hens 7 and, there in Swayne field, if you scrutinize closely enough, you can recognize Bob Sieler on the mound for the Hens and Bob Kubitz behind the plate. Louis Kwader is covering second base like a rug and there is umpire, Kent Estell, arguing with Lippy Leo Lake. Bidding a bon farewell to Swayne Field, we hear the soft, sweet tones of Mike Carone and Russ Tumey arguing about who ,makes more women swoon. ' Now we enter the new Y.M.C.A. constructed by the Trotter Enterprise Inc. CBob sells inc. on the side.l His chief drafters, Stan Rhonda and Bob Sanford drew up the plans, and Von Stambaugh Electric Company put in all the wiring with foremen Andy Veres and Clair Gill 'poking' around getting a big 4 -' - ' tw FORTY-NINERS . . . 'charge' out of the goings on. Iulius Kerekes and Ken Kramer did the plumbing. Gordon Copeland and Dick Quinlan tested the work with sledge hammers. The beautiful woodwork was constructed by lames Wixsom and Ed Lipe. Peep- ing into the Ping-Pong room we spy Bob Wollenslager and Don Wollenbecker going at the sport, hammer and pong. Then in the wrestling room, we observe Arnold Szakovits and Clarence Komorowski battling for the National Profes- sional Wrestling Crown. Next door is the weight lifting room where Iohn Kronoviter is conducting classes for junior weight lifters. Leaving the Y.M.C.A. the first thing we see is the De Mars Dress Company with Bob Nowicki as head dress designer. Dick Gutowski is the fellow on the soap box. He is starting a campaign for quicker and more accessible transportation to Bossford. The Toledo Edison Company hired Kenny Lay in case they run out of step ladders. ' As we move into the suburbs, a big sign stares us in the face. Welcome to the Bohnsack Bunny Farm, Largest in the Country. Bunnies all shapes and sizes are for sale. The Toledo Blade reports that Richard T. Nowak and Richard I. Nowak are running neck and neck for the presidency of the United States. They came to Macomber anticipating the choosing of a trade which, they thought, would suit them best in their years beyond high school. Most of the fellows were not acquainted with a school which included only boys in its student body. However, within a few weeks everything ran smoothly. These sophomores found that there were a number of activities going on in the school, and, they lost no time in taking part in them. Some of the boys entered sports such as basketball, baseball, bowling, tennis, and golf. Others. entered various school clubs. ln May 1947, the annual Meri-mac Carnival was held. There were a number of assemblies during carnival time. During the first carnival assembly, tickets were distributed to the students. At the final assembly, the boys selling more than ten books of tickets were awarded prizes. These young men were promoted to make up the Iunior Class of 1948. Some of the boys went out ond co-op. The junior year was similar to their sophomore, excepting that they were just one step farther in their education. ln April when the Senior Prom was held, the juniors were allowed to attend. In May the Meri-mac Carnival was held, and, it now seemed almost like routine to the Iuniors. The 1948 Seniors graduated in Iune, and the junio-rs were pro- moted to seniors. When summer vacation was over, the seniors were anxious to get to work because they knew it was their last year at Macomber, and they wanted to graduate with honors. . By the time the first day of school was over, in September, 1948, everyone knew that freshmen were included in the Macomber student body. The activities room was made into a gym to faccommodatet the freshmen. These officers were elected 'for the Senior Board: President, Richard T. Nowak: Vice President, Robert Shillingf Secretary, Wendell Dorf: and Treasurer, Michael Carone. Chairmen were appointed for all the various committees, and committee rrrembers were selected. In Ianuary things really started clicking. On Ianuary 24th, the Senior Skate was held, and it was a big success. During February the seniors ordered their graduation announcements and name cards. In March the Iuniors and Seniors received their class rings. On April 29th, the big day came for the Senior Prom which was held at the Woman's Building. Then in May came the Meri- mac Carnival, and it was bigger and better than ever. The Senior Banquet was held on May 26. On Iune the ninth the Forty Niners are graduating. Every Mac man will do his best to be a success in his chosen trade, cmd, thereby be a credit to himself and to Macomber. PID it ' um B SIB P32 E855 5.-NX . f 4 E ? STUDENT GOVERNMENT The Macomber Student Council under the supervision of Mr. Ziemke, has moved smoothly and efficiently forward. It has made Macomber a more demo- cratic school than ever before. Under the leadership of the President Don Stambaugh, who was capably assisted by Vice President Glen Rose Secretary-Treasurer, Robert Shilling, Sergeant-at-arms Ronald Cole and various committees, the Student Council has accomplished many things this year. The following is a list of some of the major achievements of the Student Council for the year 1948-49: Bill Carpenter was elected the Treasurer of the Area Student Council. His committee on Letter Awards made great strides in presenting to Mr. Dannenfelser a revised plan for awards. Kenneth Opperman s Welfare Committee more than filled the Red Cross quota of packages for the needy people of Europe. Glenn Rose s Building and Grounds Committee Worked and assisted Mr. Myers the assistant advisor of the Student Council, in completing the bicycle rack. Ted Clevenz Assembly Committee did an excellent job in providing us with good assemblies. Richard McCrary's Athletic Committee obtained permission to sell candy bars at basketball games. All in all, we of the Student Council, have learned much of the democratic of self-government. H , t ,r . l MIDDILE Row. Kf Kime, 1. Morrow, 1. coeilrs, B. cqfpenref, R. T. Nowak, P.. Neifzke, 1. The advent of Freshmen- to Macomber' has more than doubled the Court's duties. V ' The Court was brought into existence by the Student Council of the year 1947-48 with the hearty approval and cooperation of our principal, Mr. Dannen- felser. Vandalism and rules infractions were on the increase at Macomber. When approached on the subject of curtailment, the Student Council came up with the idea of self-discipline for students, encouraged and abetted by an all- student court. Such a court gave police authority to all members of student council, set up a code of penalties for offenders and assumed responsibility for student conduct in the auditorium and halls. The faculty has no influence upon it-it is an all-student function. The judge for each session is elected by popular vote from Student Council, a new judge being chosen for each session. The jury is also selected from the Student Council and is augmented by the presidents of Macornber clubs. The accused always has the opportunity to plead not guilty and speak in his own defense. To say this is a kangaroo court would be a fallacy. In kangaroo court the accused is always found guilty. That is not true of Student Court. It is a matter of record that three times in its existence the court has apologized to the accused and dismissed the case. The effectiveness of the court can be measured by the statement of one Iunior, convicted, that it is pretty rough to have to stand before a group of your own buddies and admit that you are guilty of some childish prank. It has become an outstanding school activity. H A noticeable improvement in playing, over recent years, is due to an in- crease in the number of regularly scheduled full band and section rehearsals. The members- of the band have a right to be proud of the part they play in the school activities. P With the cooperation of Mr. Dannentelser, the band has played at assemblies and has earned the praise of the students and Faculty of Macornber. The officers this year are: R. WE SING .The Macomber Glee Club came back very promising this year With. the advantage of a regular director and three regular rehearsals a Week. With new song books We are developing into a real singing organization. The highlight of the year was our performance with other glee clubs at the Toledo Museum of Art on February 20th. The club also sang for the Hi-Y Christmas Assembly and on March Zlst Macornber joined with Waite to sing for the Parent and Teachers' Association of East Side Central School.. On April 12th we sang for the PTA of East Toledo at Franklin School and on May 10th we put on a program for the Foremen's Club in Macomber audi- torium and received a generous applause. Singing, We have learned, is one ot the finest forms of enjoyment and We thank our director, Mr. Evans, for the inspiration he has been able to give us. The purpose of the Hi-Crier is to inform the students of what is happening and planned in the school and to let other schools know what We are doing in Vocational Education. The l-li-Crier is a student paper, written, printed, and published by and for the students. News is gathered through elected representatives from all shops and organizations who contribute to the paper. ln 1928 the first issue of the I-li-Crier was published as a three column paper. Now it ranks as one of the finest in the city. Another outstanding feature of the paper is that it has no advertisements. The staff feels that the publication belongs more to the students this way. The Hi-Crier staff Wishes to take this opportunity to thank its advisors, and all who help continually to improve this important voice of our school. Q Pi? , W .V 151 . -J M tt' .1 s w. . Through the year the club has had some very nice speakers. All of them were interesting and educational. The officers of this club are led by our advisor, Mr. Sautter. Ralph Cousino has done a very fine job as president. Glenn Bose, our Vice- President, has done his job equally Well. Bob Trotter, our secretary, has also done a nice job in keeping the attendance and other records. Bill Yohe, one time social chairman, is doing a great job in taking over the treasurer's job. These officers have built up the club in name as Well as in membership. A lot of aid came from lunior Hank labs and Senior Milton Calca- muggio Who have gone all out in putting over the many social events, all of which have helped in making the club better than the previous year. Bob Trotter has helped to keep the meetings under control and has assisted Dick Pereszlay and lan 'Schueren on the basket- ball team. Milton Calcamuggio and our Vice- President have done excellent Work during the season, as well as the tournament held annual- ly at the Central Y.M.C.A. PROTECTION For Greater Knowledge For the 1948-49 school year thirty-six projec- tionists, with Richard Nowak, Mech. Draft. as President: Richard Nowak, Machinist as Vice- President: Max Miller as Secretary and Von Stambaugh as Treasurer tackled a very ambi- tious schedule of films. Only three of these members were new to the squad which meant the benefit of experience for first class operation service. A nucleus of seventeen members will be left for the 1949-50 year to follow, leaving only three vacancies to be filled. Scholarship reached a new high, the squad making 69 A's p 91 B's , 28 Cfs p only 2 D's , and no F's for semester averages. Next year's pro- gram calls for greater selectivity by films run, but with better adaptability and use ,for classes. This makes possible a smaller, more highly trained squad. It believes in the advancement and promotion of science to aid the welfare of our nation and other countries. ln order to accomplish this the laws and forces of nature, the principles of mathematics and the uses of chemistry must be known. The'Engineers- had many activities in which they participated throughout the year. At the beginning of' the year a party was held and the members of the Projection Club were invited to attend. The Building of the Golden Gate and Building ot Macornber High. School were some of the movies seen during the year. The club participated in the Meri-Mac Carnival by having a Science Wonders show. Many new stamps were issued during the summer vacation. Our advisor, Mr. Schwein- hagen, collected stamps and first day covers for us during the summer, so We had a lot of material to add to our collections when school began. Colors and an emblem were chosen during the year. A large stamp map of the United States was purchased and will be dis- played in our library. We learned many new, interesting and profit- able features about stamp collecting. Our ad- visor Was able to secure some nice plate blocks of the New York Air Mail which in six months' time have increased in value about 8 times what they cost us. Numerous evening meetings were held for the purpose of trading stamps. Several prominent stamp collectors talked to us -gas W -it93'Tf '- on stamp collecting and also showed us some very interesting collections. Many of us have been so busy accumulating stamps that We have not been able to mount them in our stamp books. In fact We have been so busy during the year with the stamp collect- ing business that We did not have time for social activities. As the year closes, We take inventory of our collections and We find that our collec- tions are Worth much more than they were last fall. This means that the money We might have spent foolishly is profitably invested. Plans have been made to increase the mem- bership in the club by giving all of the Ma- comber students information about the club and about the pleasure and profit in stamp collec- tion. 431 - Iltnn MACOMBER MODEL MAKERS- TOP ROW R Rodarrnel, R. This year We entered the City High School Freshman League with an all freshman team and found the competition to be' very good. As for the record, we won three, tied one, and lost eight. The tie-game was played at Wood- Ward, and occurred when the score-keeper noti- fied the official, when the game was over, that Macomber had a technical foul to shoot. We shot the foul for the records, but the game was over when the gun was fired with Woodward ahead. With the introduction of freshmen in Ma- comber, the coaches are hoping that the Ma- comber athletic program will prosper in pro- portion to the increased enrollment of boys in' Macomber. 'tim . They also had a seven Won, three lost record for all of the games they played, which means that they Won 7O'X: of their games ancltthat is a good record any place. The pitchers for last year were Dick Bak, Bob Sieler, Chet Mioduszewski, and Norm Kubicz. The catcher Was Bob Kubicz. The big guns at bat were Dick Bak, Lou Kwader and Chet Mioduszewski. f PIE' Holdovers for the 1949 team are B. Kubicz, N. Kubicz, B. Sieler, C. Mioduszewski, L. Kwader, E. Spisz, B. Czubachowski and M. Malak. Other candidates who have a good chance to make the squad are: A. Heldt, I. Wyatt, I. Vetter, B. Schwab, I. Kline, G. Kurek and P. Thielen. With all the good holdovers from the '48 team, the '49 squad should do even better than last year. It this happens, we should have the best team in the state. . at 1 tw BOWLING . . . TOP ROW: C. Though the prospects for the 1948-49 golf season look promising, those of 1949-50 look even better. The 1949 season will begin to show results of having freshmen at Macomber. ,Per- fection in golf comes slowly. Having these boys for four years, instead of three, will eventually pay dividends. The squad this year will be built around four lettermen, led by Don Zbieraiewski, a two letter- man, and featuring Ierome Lukasiewicz, Iames Knull and Leon Lake. The rest of the squad will be composed mostly of freshmen and sopho- Q ,Pigs mores, being built with an eye to the future as well as the present. Some of the most promising looking yearlings could well be Richard Perrini in from Whitmer High School, Leonard Pietras, Michael Gavin, Daniel Klocinski, David Basilius and Eugene Heath. Three' other underclassmen, whose names are not mentioned, have ex- pressed the desire to try out. The schedule as this goes to- press includes six matches with city schools plus home and home matches with Findlay, Sylvania, Maumee and Whitmer. With one of the finest intramural programs in the state, our boys can be seen any night after school participating in any one of the following events: basketball, volleyball, table tennis, handball, punchball, checkers, shuffle board, softball, foul shot, golf and tennis. The program is based on the principle of O. Beckoff, R. Biela, R. Sabiniewicz, Mgr., R. A sport for every boy and every boy a good sport . The wide variety of athletic events reaches every boy in the school. More than 500 boys a week participated in intramural sports.
