Bowsher, is a man of great foresight. He predicts a more urgent need for vocational education in the postwar World,since 85 per cent of those gainfully employed, during this period of war production are engaged in manual work. Coming to Toledo from Columbus, where he was the State Director of Education, from 1935 to 1937, we find Mr. Bowsher a man with a world of experience at the job of directing a school system. In view of his untiring services in promoting education in our city, and, his interest in vocational education, a lifetime member- ship in the American Vocational Association was presented to him in December, 1942, when the association held its annual convention in Toledo. We feel certain that Toledo's Postwar public school problems, including the present school developments and the education of returning servicemen, will be capably handled by our superintendent. We, who have worked with and for him, re- alize that he can, and, does practice what he preaches. The faculty and some of his industrial friends have displayed their respect for Mr. Dannenfelser by enrolling him as a life mem- ber of the American Vocational Association, tl, His leadership ability is proven in the fact that he was the first president of the Office Managers' Association. He has also taken a leading part in the development of the Foremen's Club and the Toledo Personnel Managers' Association. Every graduate of Macomher is proud of Mr. Dannenfelser'S li- beral theory that vocational education courses in shop and related technical subjects should all be studied from a scientific view- point, and, should include social studies to develop our human re- lations, which are so important in our modern times. They all heya the initiative and the 'know how' about our world of industry to forge ahead and to get things done as apprenti- ces in their particular trades. The class officers are as follows: Daniel Sutkus, President, Daniel Zurawski, Vice-Presidentg Donald Soncrant, Secretaryg and Robert Jacobs, Treasurer. The job of these capable boys was not an easy one. They worked hard to make the Sen or activities a success. The Senior Skate, the Senior Prom, and the Graduation Exercises are activities which were planned by these officers and their advisors,Mr,Baumker and Mr.Hiss. Much in praise and thanks go to these swell fellows: The mem- bers of the Senior class sincerely appreciate the wonderful job they have done and extend to them loads of good wishes in the many years to come, 'I 0 :L SENIOR BOARD OF CONTROL The Senior Board consists of a Senior Representative from each shop in the school. The boy who represents each shop is elected by those in each particular shop, which makes a total of about fifteen representatives on the board. The board is directed by the Senior class officers. The Presi- dent, or Vice - President in case of the Presidents absence, presides over the meetings. This board meets about once every two weeks to discuss things and vote on new business. It might be said that this is the Senior governing body in the school, The students in the school know the boys on the board, and they, therefore, respect the decisions which are made there. This Senior Board gives students a chance to think and make dicisions as they will need that experience in later life. These boys, individually make no decisions but as a team, they do wonders in helping to make the wheels of school life run smoothly and effectively. SENIORS .... ALBERTS. The l944fA5 Student Council has initiated and participated in a number of important school activities. In September the Student Countil sponsored an assembly to ac- quaint the student body with the extra curricular activities of the school. An outstanding activity was the course of dancing lessons taught by Miss Atwell of Libbeyg Whitney students graciously attended the lessons. A number of dances were held after the basketball game. On April 5 the fourth annual Basketball Banquet was sponsored by the Council. Coach Anderson of Bowling Green State University gave an inspiring talk, and a moview was shown. The Council presented a trophy to Calvin Christensen whom the team chose as the most valuable player. H As usual, the representatives helped greatly in promoting the sale of war stamps and bonds, and, the Carnival. Names of former students who are now in service are beingcollec- ted so that an honor roll may be prepared. The officers of the Council are: Wayne Parker, presidentg Walter LaVrar, vice-presidentg Eugene Borkowski and Ray Busick, secretaryend trsasurerg Mr. Vander, advisor. Band . Yes, Macomber has a band. It is rather hard to believeg as our band has made very few appearances in the last year. This does not, however, reflect on the band's ability. Under the direction of Mr. McClure the band has advanced from purely martial numbers to the more difficult and finer realm of the classics. Working with inexperienced material, who have been trained under a different instructor, Mr. McGlure had before him a rather difficult taska He is succeeding in building a first rate musical organization. The band is capable of doing a wonderful job in all kinds of events and concerts. However, this has not been proved to the student. Rather than present a poorly tutored, inexperienced band, the instructor has chosen to groom the organization to perfection before putting it before the school for inspection. That is why we have not seen or he rd the band very often this year Music is an essential in the cultural life of any institution, and Macomber's band is truly representative of this fact. Their hard work and untiring efforts will bear fruit in the later life of each member of the band and Macomber. Craftsman . . Hi - Crier . After several years without publication we once more find the Hi-Crier functioning as our student edited and printed school paper. In the face of very discouraging conditions the 1944 - 45 Staff has been putting out a paper on a regular once a month basis. Working with a Staff and group of reporters without any previous experience on the Hi-Crier, Mr. Rynder, our Faculty Advisor, was able to start publication in the fall. No sooner had the paper started to func- tion under its excellent Editor-infChief, Dick Kelmer, then the Army Air Corps calledg we lost our very capable Editor after just one issue. The assistant Editor,Charles Marr, took over and has been doing a commendable job since Dick left us. Jerry Oswald was elected as Assistant Editor and will automatically become Editor next year. The most important thing about our revived Hi-Grier is the fact that it is being mailed to all Macomber men now in any of the Armed Services - within the limits of the addresses available. A constant stream of letters from the old grads reach the Staff from every cor- ner of the earth. All of them seem very glad to have this tie with home and the old Schoolge hence the real difficulties of publication right now during the War are well worth surmounting to give our own Servicemen something worthwhile. Hi-Y .... An important contribution,to the social life of Macomber, our Hi-Y, is one of the finest and most active in the city. Under the able guidance of Ronald Wagner, President, the club has grown and be- come a thriving organization. W th a nucleus of some six former mem- bers, Wagner was faced with the prospect of putting the Hi-Y on its -feet. With the aid of Donald Soncrant and other seniors, success was guanranteed. The Hi-Y has contributed to the school's social life several times in the past year. Some of the outstanding affairs were: the Hi-Y Skates and the Christmas and Easter services. Along with the social activities, the Hi-Y also has a sports programg the Hi-Y basketball team has participated in several games with the teams of other schools. With the purpose of spreading and promoting Christian endeavor throughout the commumity,the Hi-Y offers the students of Macomber an opportunity for both social and cultural advancement. Mr. Vander, of the Social Science Department, has served the club as advisor, and his efforts have been an important factor in the c1ub's success. Engineers .... Say there! What do you know about the Engineering Society? Have You ever really found out what the club is for and how it operates. The Macomber Engineering Society, a member of the Science Clubs of America, is primarily interested in science and its industrial appli- cation. The members also active in the promotion of extracuricular activities. Pete LaVrar, president of the club, has busied himself the en- tire year with the promotion of the clubs social and academic activi- ties. The annual engineers' skate is an event which all Maoomberites look forward to with enthusiasm. Of no lesser interest is the annual Hi-Y vs. Engineers' basketball game, Mr. Schweinhagen, advisor of the club, and a teacher of m thema- tics, has aided the officers of the club in their continued efforts to make the club interesting and popular with the members, Club activities have rather limited because of the war. In years past, one of the most interesting and popular activities of the Society was the plant inspection tour. These tours gave the club members an insight into industry. Because of war restrictions, however, it has been necessary to discontinue them. The club and its officers have, however, in spite of handicaps forged ahead in school social life. The Engineering Society holds a prominent place in the social life of Macomber. U1 4-I rn vu-I I-I Regional Finn Varsity Basketball . . On March 2, Macomber's Craftsmen ended a successful season with a record of 15 won and 6 lost. They went on to win the District Championship and were Regional Finalists, thus adding two new Tro- phies to our display case. This season'e high scorer for 21 games was Cal Christensen with 203 points. Following were Henry Navarro, 130 points, and Dan Sutkus 105 points. The playing of Mel Schultz could be counted on in the pinches, and he came through several times, including the gaining of points in an overtime game with Central. Ernie Kulwicki and Dick Hintz played excellent ball toward the and oi' the season, and their fine playrfigured in the winning oi' many games. Bert Mears, Dick Yonkee, Bob Pop1aws1d.,and Jack Rohr-backer were always there when help was needed. Of this year's team, five will graduate and five will remain to form the nucleus of next year's quintet. Graduates will be: Dan Sutkus, Cal Christensen, Bob Peplawski, Dick Yonkee and Mel Schultz. Although the winners of 15 games, the Black and Gold lost two very close games to Scott, two to Woodward, one slow starter to Cen- tral, and one to the Bowling Green University B team. Macomber entered the district Tournament,slated not to go very far, but the Craftsmen broke the slate. On March 5, the Macs took Clay, 56 yo 25. March 9 brought ,about the biggest upset of the season. Woodward's Polar Bears ran into the Craftsmen. The Bears were ceded first in the District and were favored to win the cham- pionship. The Crafts went into the game with the idea that Macomber was going to Bowling Green, and, when playing had ended, the score stood 26 to 21, Macomber. On March 10, Macomber took the count of L1bbey's Cowboys and won the right to represent Northwestern Ohio at B. G. At Bowling Green, the Craftsmen defeated Wapakoneta and then bowed to Bellevue in e. hotly contested game, 28 to 26. Big guns of the Mac-men for the tournament was Cal Christensen with 1,4 points. Close behind were Dan Sutkus and Henk Navarro, with 35 and 33 respectively. . Macomber wishes its Varsity grads the best of' luck. Baseball .... Baseball was revived as a varsity sport at Macomber after a lapse of two years. A squad of fifty candidates answered the call of Coach Clyde Harr. The squad has gradually been cut to fifteen boys who are varsity calibre. The pitching staff is made up of Jack Rohrbacker, Ernie Kulmicki, Ed Marzec, and Bob Jacksy. The catchers are Dick Gehring and Ernie Kulwicki, The infield is Ronald Zakrewski first base Ed Marzec, second, Hank Navarro, short stop, Jack Rohrba- cker, third base, and Walte1 Biker and Ernie Kulwicki as utility in- fielders. Art Kubacki, Dick Yonkee, George Panos, Tom Fromme, Richard Hintz, and Steve Croucheferm-a reliable outfield. Coach Harr predicts that Macomber will have the best team in the Toledo City High School League this season. The league is made up of Central, Scott, Waite, and Macomber. -Macomber has a schedule of seventeen games this season which includes games with Holland, Monclova, Clay, Whitmer, Lake, Weston, Haskins, and Monroe as well as the city schools. The record to date is wins over Holland, Mons clova, Lake, Weston, Haskins, and Clay. Macomber's 1945 baseball team is out to win the city and district baseball trophies. Some of the highlights to date have been the pitching of Rohrbacker who pitched a no-hit, no-run game against Monclova, the versatility of Kulwicki, the fine play of Yonkee, Navarro, Marsec, Zakrewski, Gehring, and Kubacki. In the city league their record was nine won and three lost, good for a three-way tie for first place with Central and Woodward. On the whole, the brand of ball played showed great promise for future Varsity material. The big guns of the team were George Panos, 157 points, and, Bob Schultz, ll5 points. Due to the fact that we have no freshmen, we are allowed to enter sophomores in the freshman league. Our boys gave a fine showing of themselves by finishing the season in possession of first place, with a record of twelve won and two lost. High scorer was Julius Hager with 93 oints. Bowling . The American League team ended the season in a tie for fourth place with Central High. The team consisted of Mel Bielawski, Dan Kozak, Bob Jacksy, Julius Kiss, and Glen Stansbury fCaptJ. ' In the first round the American Leaguers won '7 and lost 14. They picked up in the second round with 18 wins and 3 losses. The National League team finished in second place. They won the roll-off games from the Libbey American League team. The Nats were Steve Gall CCapt.D, Norm Gansmiller, Jim Rygalski, Steve Timer, and Bob Wisniewski. Golf .... V V P r F V The 1944 team was the best at Macomber from the point of city standings and the Northwestern Ohio district. However, at the dis- trict, our boys came through by winning the team championship. Our own Tommy Szymanski won the low medal score. This gave our school the right to represent the district at Columbus in the finals. Those making the trip were: Ollie Kay Cwho placed third in individual scoringj, Tom Szymanski, Don Forquer and Danny Slawinski. They placed seventh in the state. With three of these four back and several more sophomores and juniors, it is hoped that they will do as well if not much better than last year. In addition to these mentioned above, the following boys received letters: Geo.Le w, Richard Brzynski, and Leo Kajfasz. Our coach Mr. Romberger, who had the honor of coaching the 1940 DeVilbiss Team to a state championship, will again handle our team, .. Epilogue . . o 1 June 8, l9L5 Macomber Days are a memory to its Seniors. These Sixteenth Street wolves will howl no more. The girls at whitney will pine and become lonesome, another group equally as good will entertain them next year. Our friend Fred will no longer voice his opinion to you so plainly.
