History of Mack School of Nursing The year 1874 marks the beginning of nursing education in Canada under the Nighting ale system. The St. Catharine ' s Training School and Nurse ' s Home, later to be called after its founder, The Mack School of Nursing, commenced active operations in the month of June, one hundred years ago. It speaks very much for the energy and foresight of Dr. Mack, that a little border town in Ontario should have been the first in Canada to establish a nursing school. The St. Catharines General Hospital, Training School and Nurse ' s Home at the turn of the century. The nurses in the earliest days were given testimonial books. In one of these. Dr. Mack wrote, The Testimonials in this book are expected to be strictly truthful. The patients, or his friends, or the Doctor signed these statements which the nurse brought back to the training school. Some of them show poignantly that human need has remained the same throughout the years - the nurse was reliable, excellent, efficient, intelligent, adapted herself to the ways of the family, was cheerful, and perhaps often it was emphasized that she was KIND.

Superintendents of the Mack Training School It is difficult to pay tribute to some of the early leaders of the Mack School of Nursing because of lack of records.
