ii r H History is essentially the story of continous exploration, discovery and subsequent social change. In this, the year of our Centennial at Mack, the %w IBf pace of change has been rapid and forceful in its effect on the nature of nursing education. One certainty in our unpredictable world is that the pace of change will accelerate. It will remain, however, an exciting and challenging world in which disappointments and successes will continue to prepare you for future achievements. f K M fo years, we have shared in the educational process. If we have t MmH successfully imparted knowledge and have helped you to think clearly, I VfljF logically and objectively; to avoid dogmatism and preserve healthy skepticism; and to tackle questions for which there are no pat answers; then we have shared well. If each of you has internalized a desire for excellence in your individual approach to life ' s problems, together with a sincere sense of obligation to your fellowman, you have dis- charged some of the major responsibilities in life. During your initial years in nursing, looking ahead will help to ease the pangs of impatience, as you observe conditions around you that are desirable, missing or wrong. During the growth phase, keep up your knowledge in order to suggest changes, rise above routine, and assist in the future development of nursing. Ask for room to grow, while reinforcing your intention to strengthen loyalty to the principles and institutions that have provided nursing ' s framework and code. In this Centennial year. Canadian nurses cannot be satisfied with a hedged-in view of the future, when with awareness, intellectual effort, and work, horizons can be broadened. Advances are wrought by the watchful rather than the impulsive person, and by those who are stubborn in their refusal to accept early defeat. Young graduates like yourselves, are capable and ready to take up the challenge of pioneering new things. Every one of you has the choice of varied roads on which to gather nursing ' s historical perspectives and to foster dynamic inroads for nursing ' s continuing major ventures in the 20th century. The time is ripe for the Renaissance in which respect for the goodness bequeathed to us by nursing ' s pioneers blends into the development of new things that are better suited to a changing environment and life style. The opportunities remain great; the challenge remains greater. We are proud of you and your accomplishments. Our warmest congratulations to each of you. Affectionately, (Mrs. ) Mary Sirotnik and Teachers of Year II
