Dedications... 74 Dedicated to the Fast, Present and Future Graduates of Mack, with Special Dedication to Dr. Theophilus Mack. The Mack School of Nursing St. Catharines, Ontario NIAGARA COLLEGE . ! SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES | D.visior mg Education | THE MACK C£r TRE It was through the energy and foresight of Dr. Theophilus Mack that the oldest school in Canada, under The Nightingale System, was established. We gratefully dedicate this book in memory of Dr. Theophilus Mack (1820 - 1881). The Mack School The Chairman This year 1974 is a very special one. For you, the graduating class of 1974, it means the beginning of your life as professional nurses, and for those of us who have been associated with The Mack Schools of Nursing, it marks the end of one phase of nursing education and the beginning of another. Any of us who have had a close association with Mack can be justifiably proud of our heritage, of the education that we received, and of the traditions of which we were a part. Each of you has played a part in its history and in its development which began with Dr. Mack a century ago. Although you will be the final class to graduate from The Mack School of Nursing, the name of Mack will live on through it new designation--The Mack Centre of Nursing Education. In the quieter moments of the years ahead you will leaf through the Dedications . If it is for you as it has been for so many of us who preceded you, they will be pleasant moments recalling a part of your life which you will keep in your fondest memories. On behalf of the faculty and myself we wish you the joy of service to others and success and happiness in the future. Lois A. Millar Chairman Teaching Days The nursing staff of the St. Catharines General Hospital extend sincere con- gratulations and good wishes to the 1974 graduates of the Mack School of Nursing. This year we are celebrating the centennial of the school and you have chosen for your yearbook the theme Dedications . As you begin the practice of your profession 1 would like to leave with you the following quotation. Where you are is of no moment but only what you are doing there. It is not the place that enables you but you the place; and this only by doing that which is great and noble . Petrarch. (Mrs.) L. R. Flight. Director of Nursing Service. God has given us a memory that we might have roses in December James Barrie once wrote. Our memory keeps alive the good and true things we experience in June, that is in the beautified times of our lives. It recalls these cheering experiences to give us strength in the dark and difficult December of our lives. This year your school celebrates its one-hundredth anniversary and many memories are brought to life again as former graduates recall the joys of their graduation day. It is my wish for you that the memory of your graduation will be the sustain- ing force to help you meet the challenges of the future with much joy, hope, courage and peace. May I, on behalf of the Sisters and staff of Hotel Dieu Hospital, congratulate you on being the 100th class to graduate from the Mack School of Nursing and wish you many happy memories as you celebrate the achievement of your long awaited goal--your own graduation day. Marjorie Hemphill This is a time of change. You are living through an era in the human scene that challenges established ideas and institutions. In the presence of these challenges and changes it is easy to lose sight of the basic values of the nursing profession. This year of 1974, marks your school ' s Centennial Year , many years of dedicated service to a grateful public. For two brief years you have had many experiences. You have found friends with whom you laughed, studied, cried and rejoiced. Now you must leave many of these friends and go forth to use your knowledge and skills to serve others. In doing this you will grow and be enriched in life. With your rejoicing is a tinge of sadness — the ending of an era, The Mack School of Nursing . Remember always with pride the values and opportunities given to you by Mack . Set goals for yourself, then strive for new ones. May life ' s challenge never leave you. My warmest wishes to each one of you. Rita M. Grobb, R.N. Director of Nursing, The Shaver Hospital for Chest Diseases The Nursing Staff of the Welland County General Hospital join me in extending to you sincerest congratulations on your graduation from the Mack Centre Nursing Program 1972-74. These two years of your nursing program are particularly important in that they have been marked by historically significant events both for yourselves and for your school of nursing. Firstly, in September 1973, you have witnessed the transfer of your nursing program to the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology. Thus, student nurses have now become colleagues with students of other educational programs which will be a definite asset to your basic education. We are also sharing with you in the fact that 1974 is the Centennial year of the Mack School of Nursing. Therefore you can be proud that you have been part of a great school which was a first in North America and whose program of nursing education has been second to none in this continent. May you continually develop your abilities and learn new skills as you progress in the practice of your nursing career. Yours sincerely, Miss Agnes Fleury, Director of Nursing. Dear Graduate, before you lies the path of life, as yet unknown Whether neath dark or smiling skies, No matter, you walk not alone. For one awaits who knows the way. Whose feet all paths of earth have trod. Stay close to Him from day to day For they are safe who walk with God. We, the staff of Port Colborne General Hospital send our most sincere congratulations to the class of 1974. Yours very truly, This year, 1974, is an important year to all of us. It marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of a nursing education programme in association with the St. Catharines General. It is the year in which you graduate from the Mack School of Nursing. There is no question that, through its one hundred years, The Mack School (by whatever name, because it hasn ' t always been Mack) has expanded, changed, improved and kept pace with developments in nursing education. The school has brought to graduation hundreds of young people with the skills to participate in various ways in the provision of health care to our people and educate others to do so. You have now reached the stage where you can make your contribution. It is pleasant to look back, reminisce and review what has happened in the past, perhaps in retrospect making it seem better than it really was but unable, in any material way. to alter it. How much more interesting and challenging it is to look forward to the future. By continued study, growth and application, you can make the future what you want it to be. On behalf of the staff of The St. Catharines General Hospital, I extend warm and sincere congratulations to the members of the Class of ' 74 on your attainment of graduation and also best wishes for your future. (Mrs. ) Florence Gallinger, Director of Nursing. E. C. Robinson, Executive Director 1973 was the year in which nursing education moved from a hospital setting to that of education. The Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology became responsible for the Mack School of Nursing on September 1, 1973. The transition was accomplished in a very short period of time and with very few problems. All of us had concerns and questions as we dealt with the numerous details of the transfer. The College had to learn a great deal about nursing education. What were its objectives, traditions, unique features? Nursing students and teaching staff wondered what the change would mean in terms of program, procedures, identity, i j Not all questions have been answered yet. But we have found that we have KKf much in common. The philosophy of providing a sound theoretical base. ■1 B g m coupled with extensive practical training, is shared by nursing and other College H H HH H programs. Because of this philosophy, the association of the Mack School of Kj H Nursing with the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology should prove advantageous in maintaining the standards, traditions and identity of nursing education. 1974 is the Mack Centennial Year. It is an appropriate occasion to note the outstanding contribution of the Mack School of Nursing since its inception. Your preparation for a worthwhile career in nursing is the result of much work on the part of the faculty in developing, improving and perfecting your program of instruction. For you to have measured up to the high standards of the Mack School of Nursing should be a matter of justified pride. To all of you I extend my very best wishes for peace and success. A.S. Manera, President. I wish to extend a warm welcome to the students and staff of the Mack School of Nursing, which in September, 1973, officially became a part of Niagara College, and a Division of the School of Applied Arts and Health Sciences. It is with considerable pride that we begin this alliance at a time when the Mack School is preparing to celebrate its 100th Anniversary. Our aim is to see this union grow to benefit nursing education in this province. During its long span of operation, Mack has become one of most respected Schools of Nursing in Canada. What has made the School a great one, is the dedication of the people who have been a part of it, and particularly, the excellent quality of its graduates. I am certain that the graduates of the. centennial year will similarly distinguish themselves in the service of their fellowmen as have past graduates of this institution. As graduates of the Class of ' 74 embark on their careers in nursing, may I extend to them my wishes for success and satisfaction in this noble calling. I. J. Giancarlo, Dean School of Applied Arts and Health Sciences I would like to thank all those who have participated in putting Dedications. . .together. Without the people who took pictures, typed, banked, sold mints and nuts, and sold ads, Dedications. . . would not be. The Alumni is also to be commended for their support, faith and interest in the school. It is through their work that we experience what the traditions of Mack have meant and will mean. I would also like to thank Miss L. Willms and Miss A. Workman for their faith and advice which they gave in desperate times. Special thanks go to Patti Paolozzi, assistant editor, and Mr. Del Goranson, ICP Representative, who were always there to lend a helping hand. May I wish my heartiest congratulations to the Graduating Class of ' 74, and my sincerest best wishes to the first graduating class from The Mack Centre of Nursing Education Class of ' 75. TKE0PHILU5 MACK ■ 1878 • ii r H History is essentially the story of continous exploration, discovery and subsequent social change. In this, the year of our Centennial at Mack, the %w IBf pace of change has been rapid and forceful in its effect on the nature of nursing education. One certainty in our unpredictable world is that the pace of change will accelerate. It will remain, however, an exciting and challenging world in which disappointments and successes will continue to prepare you for future achievements. f K M fo years, we have shared in the educational process. If we have t MmH successfully imparted knowledge and have helped you to think clearly, I VfljF logically and objectively; to avoid dogmatism and preserve healthy skepticism; and to tackle questions for which there are no pat answers; then we have shared well. If each of you has internalized a desire for excellence in your individual approach to life ' s problems, together with a sincere sense of obligation to your fellowman, you have dis- charged some of the major responsibilities in life. During your initial years in nursing, looking ahead will help to ease the pangs of impatience, as you observe conditions around you that are desirable, missing or wrong. During the growth phase, keep up your knowledge in order to suggest changes, rise above routine, and assist in the future development of nursing. Ask for room to grow, while reinforcing your intention to strengthen loyalty to the principles and institutions that have provided nursing ' s framework and code. In this Centennial year. Canadian nurses cannot be satisfied with a hedged-in view of the future, when with awareness, intellectual effort, and work, horizons can be broadened. Advances are wrought by the watchful rather than the impulsive person, and by those who are stubborn in their refusal to accept early defeat. Young graduates like yourselves, are capable and ready to take up the challenge of pioneering new things. Every one of you has the choice of varied roads on which to gather nursing ' s historical perspectives and to foster dynamic inroads for nursing ' s continuing major ventures in the 20th century. The time is ripe for the Renaissance in which respect for the goodness bequeathed to us by nursing ' s pioneers blends into the development of new things that are better suited to a changing environment and life style. The opportunities remain great; the challenge remains greater. We are proud of you and your accomplishments. Our warmest congratulations to each of you. You have reached the end of your first year of nursing, with its ups and downs, and tears and laugh- ter, good times, bad times, sun and rain. Throughout the year you have been confronted with the need to make decisions and to evaluate the effects of these decisions. Now you are finished! Yet what are ends but new beginnings? On behalf of the Year 1 Faculty, I would like to congratulate you on your achievements this year and wish you success and happiness as you enter your second and final year. Year I History of Mack School of Nursing The year 1874 marks the beginning of nursing education in Canada under the Nighting ale system. The St. Catharine ' s Training School and Nurse ' s Home, later to be called after its founder, The Mack School of Nursing, commenced active operations in the month of June, one hundred years ago. It speaks very much for the energy and foresight of Dr. Mack, that a little border town in Ontario should have been the first in Canada to establish a nursing school. The St. Catharines General Hospital, Training School and Nurse ' s Home at the turn of the century. The nurses in the earliest days were given testimonial books. In one of these. Dr. Mack wrote, The Testimonials in this book are expected to be strictly truthful. The patients, or his friends, or the Doctor signed these statements which the nurse brought back to the training school. Some of them show poignantly that human need has remained the same throughout the years - the nurse was reliable, excellent, efficient, intelligent, adapted herself to the ways of the family, was cheerful, and perhaps often it was emphasized that she was KIND. Superintendents of the Mack Training School It is difficult to pay tribute to some of the early leaders of the Mack School of Nursing because of lack of records. The Superintendants , in order are: Sister Emma Linike - 1880 Miss Black - 1885 Miss Hibbard - 1886 Miss Benson - 1887 Miss Hannah Hollingworth - 1889 Miss Anne Hutchison - 1893 Miss Hannah Hollingworth - 1896 Miss Lillian Uren - 1909 Miss Harriet Mieklejohn - 1925 Miss Anne Wright - 1927 Miss E. Bell Robers - 1949 Miss H. Brown - 1952 Mrs. J. porteous - 1952 Mr. R. Forster - 1967 Miss S. Brough - 1970 Miss Lois Millar - 1972 It is to these women, and all the former graduates of Mack School of Nursing that we pay tribute. Without their hard work, and determination, the Mack School of Nursing would not be what it is today . Early Graduate Miss H . Brown Miss S . Brough 71 student Nurses ' Association Executive As the year draws to a close, it is with mixed feelings that we go forth and take our place in society. Although we leave behind two years rich with learning and experience, from time to time, we will pause to relive fond memories of our years at Mack. It is with great pride that we graduate from The Mack School of Nursing, in this, our Centennial year. To the Class of ' 75, sincere best wishes for success in your future endeavours. Be proud to be the first graduating class of nurses from Niagara College; but remember the Mack School of Nursing and help us to keep its traditions alive. Having recently elected your new Student Nurses ' Association Executive, please give them your support, as they function on your behalf. I would like to thank Miss Millar and Miss Willms for their en- couragement and guidance. Thanks are extended to the Executive of the Student Nurses ' Association, whose time and effort has resulted in a successful year, and also to the students who supported the activities. In closing, we extend a special thank you to the Board of Governors of Niagara College, who made it possible for the Class of ' 74 to com- plete the program as graduates of The Mack School of Nursing. Maxwell Bennie, President, Student Nurses ' Association. This year the letters N .C .F . have stood for much more than a %w y name. Nurses ' Christian Fellowship has been an active group of 4n Ul SwS students with the common denomination being Jesus Christ. It has meant support from each other while facing new experiences; ■ i ■ in nursing and in everyday life. Our meetings have consisted of a get- WAa ISvImZI acquainted party, seminars, Bible Studies, lectures by doctors, a weekend retreat and much more all combined to give growth and pleasure. We have felt a real unity in our group for which we thank God. Fellowship Miss B. L. Sider, Representative, N.C.F. Zenaida Bautista lives in Manila in the Philippines. She was 7 years old on March 9, 1974. Zeny is quite enthusiastic about going to school in June 1974. She will be in grade 1. Zeny loves to play. She gets along well with her peers, Nene and Joel. She enjoys playing with bending body , hide-and-seek, and running a race. Zeny helps in the household chores. She does the dishes, runs errands and sometimes she babysits her small siblings. There are nine other Bautista children between the ages of 21 and 1. The two eldest sons, Mario, who is 21 years old, and Eusebis, who is 16 years old, help their father in fishing while Maria Teodora, who is 18 years old, is a store helper. She earns $6.00 a month. The family lives in a rural area that is an hour and a half drive from Manila. The house is made of palm leaves, bamboo, lumber, and galvanized iron sheets. It is rented at $3.35 a month. They enjoyed the celebration of the Yuletide with palutang (native delicacy made of glutinous rice), chow mein with fried chicken and bread. The Bautista ' s have had many a hard time, but have been helped through the Foster Parents ' Plan. They avail themselves of the services of Plan ' s medical and dental clinic whenever needed. Through our contribution, the Bautista ' s are being helped and given the care that they need. Alone to Die I reached for you but you weren ' t there To give me love, does no one care? Alone again, no chance, no hope, I reach for death for I just can ' t cope. I sit alone in my dreary room, Is no one there to prevent my doom? Where is the joy that others share? Must I alone have pain to bear? The time is near, the moon is high A perfect moment; 1 choose to die. Please think of me without disgust Just give to others the love and trust, That somehow always passed me by And left me here alone to die.
