Dedications... 73 Dedicated to the Fellowsh of the Mack School of Nursing with Special Dedication to Miss Sylvia Brough With Special Dedication to. We, the students of the Mack School of Nursing, gratefully dedicate this yearbook to Miss Sylvia Brough, whose diligent work and dedication will always be remem- bered . The Mack School... .for I shall not.. Dedications To... Graduation for each of you is an important occasion. It brings to a close one phase of life and transports you into another. It marks the end of two years of preparation for your life ' s work, and opens for you at last that long-awaited door. Each of you has brought to Mack special gifts from which we all have benefited. In turn, you are taking away with you other gifts which you have earned through study and friendships with faculty and students. These are lasting gifts which light the road ahead. While it can be said that only a fool truly believes that he can live his life the way he plans it, we must nevertheless have plans and hopes. You will find that your destinies are determined in ways that you could never have planned. Being a competent master of your task, so that you may serve both loyally and well, will be the best guarantee of your success. To each of you I extend a warm congratulation. Your teachers join me in expressing the wish that each of you may enjoy a full measure of personal and of professional accomplishment. May life open to you, door by door; may you find yourself the ability to trust it, and the courage to give to the difficult the most confidence of all. Principal In life there is a time for joy and a time for tears. As nurses you have and will know times filled with the joys of helping and healing, and times filled with the tears of frustration. You as nurses will live life to its fullest. Kahlil Gibran wrote Work is love made visible . As you begin working in your nursing careers, remember, you have a unique responsibility to make every aspect of your work an act of love; love for the nursing craft and more important, love for all humanity. Remember also, no act of love is too small or too large for the heart and hands of living persons. Love and work for your family, friends, profes- sion and yourself. For if you do, you shall grow as a nurse and as a human being. All the staff here at the Shaver Hospital for Chest Diseases congratulate each and every one of you, the class of 1973, and wish for you the best things of living and loving. (Mrs. M. A.) Rita M. Grobb, R.N. Director of Nursing The Shaver Hospital For Chest Diseases. On behalf of the Sisters and staff of Hotel Dieu Hospital, may I take this opportu- nity to offer you our heartiest congratulations and to wish you success and fulfill- ment in your nursing career. (Mrs.) J. F. Hemphill Director Nursing Service. On behalf of the Nursing staff of The St. Catharines General Hospital it is my pleasure to extend congratulations and good wishes to the 1973 graduating class of the Mack School of Nursing. We know that you will continue to seek knowledge and understanding, remember- ing the words of Samuel Johnson, What we hope ever to do with ease, we must leam first to do with diligence . We sincerely hope you will find fulfillment in your career. (Mrs.) L. R. Flight, Director of Nursing Service The St. Catharines General Hospital. On behalf of the Hospital and Nursing Department personnel, 1 wish to convey to each member of the 1973 Graduating Class my personal and sincerest congratula- tions on this important achievement. It was indeed a privilege for each one of us to have shared in your learning during your varied experiences in our hospital. We have certainly derived mutual en- richment through this educational encounter in our clinical areas . May you continue to find self-fulfillment and success in your lives as you enter the nursing profession where the health of people is your prime concern. Miss Agnes Fleury, Director of Nursing Welland County General Hospital. Dear students, It is my pleasure, on behalf of the nursing staff of Port Colborne General Hospital, to extend congratulations to the 1973 graduating class of the Mack School of Nursing. Your efforts, past, present and future wiU be an inspiration to those with whon:i you come in contact, and to those who follow you. The future role of nursing may well rest with you, Yours very truly, (Mrs.) Livia Payne, Director of Nursing. Education in a School of Nursing or any school of comparable train- ing is not an exercise in cramming, but a flexing of mental muscles to develop their ability to discern and absorb. You do not study to be a nurse, but to know what a nurse has to be. These two years at Mack have been spent with many like yourself who want to be a nurse and with a few faculty friends who know what a nurse has to be It is in this environment of ideas that you have developed your own interpretation of nursing. After Graduation, knowing what a nurse has to be, will be taken for granted, how you will be a nurse is then a personal thing, Florence Nightingale, whose abilities ran the list of public service, is remem bered most of all for the two outstanding qualities — her steadfast- ness of purpose and her compassion for her soldier patients. This above all I leave with you: be a patient nurse and nurse your patient; look upon the sick with compassion and they will heap gra- titude on your name. Be unfailing in your practice and it will re- ward you in many ways. Yours is an honourable profession but only you can bring it honour. Mr. Donald P. Shaw, Chairman of the Mack School of Nursing Committee The making of Dedications. I sincerely extend my thanks to those listed on the op- posite page for their help in making Dedications what it is. May I also mention that the name of our book was changed to help give it a deeper meaning. A contest was held and it was decided that Margaret Muir ' s title, Dedications , should be chosen. I hope that now and in future years, you will enjoy reminiscing through Dedications as it is dedicated to all of you. Sincerely, Judy Monteith Miss L. Willms Mrs. I. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Your journey began two years ago when you entered the nursing programme, having made a decision to further organize your lives and develop your capacities. At the onset, your in- experienced steps were slow and hesitant. Little by little, you gained in assurance and, as initial insecurity lessened, you became a more confident traveller in the realm of nursing. For teachers, it was gratifying to see with what rapidity you extracted from everything — books, people, films, quiet conversation, random phrases, encounter with persons experi- encing the pains and joys of living — what was needed to sustain you during difficult and joyous moments on the road of educational experience. Amid gentle encouragement, you proceeded with an increasingly calm, unconquerable and assured spirit. Throughout the past two years, you have had to persevere long in your learning and adapt to varying situations re- maining firm in your direction and correct in your goals. Often, you had to channel energies according to the Tightness of things and timeliness of action rather than to wishful thinking or preferences. Soon you will approach the launching zone . You do so in the spirit of the true inquirer who believes in intellectual honesty and who remains humble enough to realize that there is still much for all of us to learn. When you depart, we trust that you will continue to be flexible and assertive according to the demands of duty and tenor of the times. As you move forward into the next phase of life experience, we wish for you health — the groundwork of all happi- ness — and the quality of involvement in the realm of human experience which includes meaningful encounter and change. This encounter will happen in a world in which almost every truth is being questioned — an uneasy world which needs people who care about dignity, respect, feelings, pride, individuality, and personal worth. Caring will de- mand active involvement and an unselfish giving of yourselves to those for whom you care. You have travelled admirably with steadfast determination overcoming obstacles during your formal nursing prepara- tion. We are proud of you and your accomplishments. Our continued wishes for you are that you experience satisfaction and fulfillment in your personal and professional lives and that life gives you the freedom and courage, to Love the beautiful Seek out the true Wish for the good And the best do, (Moses Mendelssohn) Affectionately .. You left my food tray out of reach on my bedside table, Then you discussed my nutritional needs during a nursing conference. I was thirsty and helpless, but you forgot to ask the attendant to refill my water pitcher. You later charted that I refused fluids. I was lonely and afraid, but you left me alone because I was so co-operative and never asked for anything. 1 was in financial difficulties and in your mind I became an object of annoyance. I was a nursing problem and you discussed the theoretical basis of my illness. And you do not even see me. 1 was thought to be dying and, thinking 1 could not hear, you said you hoped I would not die before it was time to finish your day because you had an appointment at the beauty parlor before your evening date. You seem so well educated, well spoken, and so neat in your spotless unwrinkled uniform. But when I speak to you, you seem to listen but do not hear me. Help me, care about what happens to me, I am so tired, so lonely and so very afraid. Talk to me--reach out to me--take my hand. Let what happens to me matter to you. nurse, listen Dedications to the Class of ' 74 You are constantly being confronted with the need to make decisions, ones which will influence you as well as the people around you, whether they be friends, family, classmates or patients. Regardless of the significance of the decisions you make, the success you achieve rests mainly on the goals you have set for yourself and your dedication to these goals. Disraeli has stated that: The secret of success is constancy to purpose. On behalf of the Term 1 faculty, I would like to wish you continued success as you follow the path you have chosen. Our challenge to you: Have a purpose in life, and having it, throw into your work such strength of mind and muscle as God has given you. Term 1 Co-ordinator 57 65 67 Dedications to Reality... Ha! Ha! and you all thought that being principal was all work and no play! ! 79 Dedications to Our Foster Child, Zenaida Bautista, from Manila in the Philippines Zenaida Bautista was 6 years old on March 9, 1973. Zeny is a very playful little girl. She loves playing writh the neighbourhood children. Her favourite games are playing house, stores, and school. Zeny gets along well with her peers. She is still very inhibited when in the company of adults. She is bashful. Hopefully, she will overcome this. Zeny ' s eldest brother, Mario, is 20 years old. He was unable to finish the 5th grade and has difficulty in finding a good job. He works with his father as a fisherman and together they earn $2. 00 a week. Mrs. Bautista is a housewife. Zeny has 7 other brothers and sisters between the ages of 17 and 2. All of the children are in good health. The family lives in a rural area that is an hour and a half drive from Manila. The house is made of palm leaves, bamboo, lumber, and galvanized iron sheets. It is rented at $3. 35 a month. Life has been difficult for the Bautista ' s. With the family ' s meager income, basic needs could hardly be met. Moreover, the children could not avail themselves of a good education. With Foster Parents ' Plans help life can be a bit changed now. Basic needs are amply met and next year it is hoped that all of the school aged children will be in school. Then the potentials of every family member shall be explored and de- veloped so that everyone can eventually be a contributor towards progress.
