18 THE MARGARETTA WHY THE GIRAFFE HAS A LONG NECK A long time ago when lupiter was king of the earth, there were new animals com- ing into existence every day Once in the country of Syronia a very thick yungle like country 1 strange long legged animal was born This type of animal kept multiplying until there were large numbers of them that traveled in huge herds Now this animal couldnt make any noise and cons erse with the other animals as the rest did All the others had secrets and talked back and forth but this new animal nes er knew anything that was go ing on When the others talked or looked at something he would crane his neck as far as possible to see what was happening This kept on generation after generation until the neck of the animal started to be a bit longer As time went on his neck kept lengthening until he was able to stand a little higher than the others and could look down upon them He dis cox ered that by reaching he could get different food and much better than before The more he reached the longer his neck grew At last he found it uncomfortable in the Jungle because of his long neck ind decided to live in another part of the world. This animal now' has the name of a giraffe. He moved to Africa, south of the Sahara, where he still lives.
