16 THE MARGARETTA THE MISTAKE 'It all began in a city in the West, or at least that is the way the story goes. It was summer and everything was in bloom. The trees were especially beautiful along the road in the country but not so in the city In the city things were different There were no trees no flowers nor brooks Houses that was all not cozy houses with flower gardens These hous es were seven or eight stones high and crowded together so you couldnt even w alk between them Sally was what all the kids called her She and her mother lived in two rooms on the svcth floor of one of the apartment houses Sally was an ordinary girl about 14 years old with dark hair and brown eyes and was five feet three inches tall I have already said she was ordinary except for one thing she was a Negro Of course that wouldn t make too much difference in some places but in that city in the West it did Things were going hard for Sally and her mother Sally s father had dned when she was ten and her mother had to work hard for a living Fall was drawing near and school would start soon The very thought of school sent a shiver up her back She hated to go there and have the girls and boys laugh at her because she was a Negro On the first day of school things went as they had last year and the year before that Sally went about her studies with out speaking to the others at school Study study was all Sally did The teachers all hked her because she studied so hard and got such good ranks The girls were talking about her She could tell but she didnt bother with them She lust went about her w ork The other girls had formed a club but Sally had not been asked to Join Not that it mattered, anyway, she didn't want to belong to an old club. The days went on. One morning Nan- cy, the leader of the club, came up to Sally, who was surprised to have Nancy of all people speak to her At first Nancy talked about school work and then finally brought up the subject of the club Nancy always had a w ay of beating about the bush before saying what she really want ed to say The girls and I were wondering if you would join our club Of course she hadn t heard right They couldn t be ask ing her to loin their club But then Nancy was speaking again We really wish you would join Sally It was too good to be true' They were really asking her to yoin their club Oh Id love to yoin said Sally too excited to think straight VVe were afraid you wouldn t Join You nexer would speak to us and we thought you didn t like us Oh no I would love to be a member of your club I thought you girls didnt like me because I was a Negro That s w hy I never spoke to you We re haxing a party tonight Sally Why dont you come?
