' v v K- 4 7 K , ! 3 y 7 l 1 . , ' . . , K , A v. , V, if The? lvldrgarella HISTORY OF 'VI H S The eaily h1sto1y of 'XI H S IS al leady folgotten Probably there IS nobodv w ho can tell when the school was founded All the old records peltalnlng to the H1gh School were destroyed by fire and no one IS able to find out the facts regardlng the school 1n 1ts earller days By the help of the older c1t1zens of M3Ch1aS we haye learned that our hlgh school was probably started 1n the fortles or to state It another way about e1ghty years ago Doubtlessly M H S IS one of the oldest h1gh schools 1n the state It was housed IH the western half of the first fioor 1n L1bby Hall and the sesslons of the grammar school were held IH the eastern half Between them was a class room that was used somewhat by both schools At first the teachmg force of Ma chlas H1gh was the pr1nc1pal alone but an asslstant teacher was em ployed before the school had been 1n operatlon many years Thls ar rangement howey er dld not hold cont1nuously To explaln lt 1n a Yankee way an asslstant teacher was employed off and on for thlrty years About 1861 there were nlnety one scholars and the pr1nc1pal was the1r only mstructor Surely the conges tion must haye been greater then than It has been durmg the past few years Howey er it does not seem as 1f the students could haye learned as well The prlnclpals came and w ent ln qulck successxon and as a general rule were changlng every term year It IS almost certam that more than a hundred prlnclpals haye had charge of MaCh1HS H1gh School For several years at a t1me the students were yery msubordlnate and gave the prmclpals much annoy ance and sometimes they put hlm out Putting cayenne pepper on the stove and stoppmg up the stove plpe and llke pranks were occaslonally re sorted to by the older students Sometlmes the Pr1nc1pa1 would last only two or three weeks and another would take h1S place but at other tlmes the boys found the1r match Sixty years ago the average t tendance was about fifty students whlch was consldered a well filled school There were very few boys the school being composed mostly of girls About half of the students were mterested and studlous and about half were lookmg for a good t1me whlch tends to show that youthful nature has not changed much IH slxty years One featule was that students came for a term or two or three terms and learned what they could 1n that t1me but only a yery few ever completed their course of study 'lhere were no graduatlon exerclses at that t1me The subjects studled were readlng CPW 4 D ... t' X: A. .. -y' .7 , ' - v V ,... , , ' Y 1 v ' '.' .
