In addition to the tour of famous sites of the city, the Society has made possible the awarding of an annual prize to a student writing an essay on some phase of Bordentown's history. A youth hauling a yule log in the feathery snow, and silhouettes of romantic couples leaving the large colonial house with the lighted windows reminded us of times long past, and filled every- one with the Christmas spirit. Lovely girls in swirling skirts of billowy net gaily decorated with multi-hued sequins whirled merrily across the Hoot in the arms of correctly attired gentlemen. While they danced on into the enchanting night, the silver stars reflected love-light in their sparkling eyes as they wistfully gazed at the honey-colored moon slowly rising over the dark branches of the large spruce trees. The decorative ability of jean Inman and her committee had transported all to the world of fantasy, but all too soon the fleet- winged evening passed, and with it some of the most memorable hours spent by the seniors at the old high school. Gay farewells Hoated through the halls as friends bid each other Merry Christmas. l33l A DAY ON SATURN 0 Through the ethereal realm of cloudland and the endless miles of space, my great rocket ship soared on its way to the strange planet of Saturn. Soon it landed on the greatest of all landing strips, the Saturnian luminous circling ring. I alighted from my ship and found that only a few hours had elapsedg it was nine in the morning on this balmy summer's day of the year 1960. , The food at Barbara Parker's Inn was always very appetizing, so I decided to stop there for breakfast. After eating, I paid the cashier, Dorothy Jones, who gave me the wrong change while wistfully gazing at her new flame, joseph Lippincott, the dashing movie producer. After leaving the inn, I had a sudden sick feeling. The food must have caused my illness. Two nurses, Martha Grabania and Betty Pigott, gave me first aid, and then invited me to visit the hospital. There I met another nurse, Margaret Hannah, an old acquaintance, who told me that the hospital was owned by Robert Schwoebel, the great surgeon. My recovery was rapid so I continued my stroll down the street. Soon I noticed a large building. I walked inside, and went up one hundred floors in an elevator to find the greatest comedian of the day, Bob I got a million of 'em Campbell. He said that Bettie Dennis had a program over which she advised love-lorn girls how to get their men. He also mentioned that Esther Prior was singing over S. B. C., Saturn's newest broadcasting system, and that Gerrie Soden had a gossip column in the daily paper. He finished by saying that Ann Roberts had her own program on which she lectured on Chemisty of the Future. As it was now time for lunch, I dined at Donald Kimmelman's Happy Hacienda. It certainly was a beautiful building. They say William Diller, the noted architect, designed it. Marion Girdon was the Hacienda's chief cook, and I must admit, the food was delicious. As I looked upon the patio, I saw WiHiam Valentine, a popular crooner, whose hit song was Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, lunching with jean Inman, the new radio comedienne. After lunch, I wandered around town and decided to take a short trip to the country by rocket. john Lippincott had designed the ship and took me on the excursion himself. He said that janet Bowker was his capable private secretary, and mentioned that she had given him many ideas - about the rocket,,that is! His partner was Herbert Zelley, the great physicist who had invented the modern air belt. The stewardess, Bessie Carroll, turned on the radio, and we listened to the singing of the promising young Saturolitan opera star, Kenneth Purks. We passed over a spacious farm operated by Lois Reed and Catherine Emery. I was told that Roy Lawrence, the executive head of the Future Farmers of Saturn, had rewarded them for having the best jet-propelled chickens in their area. After viewing the many sylvan glades, I returned to the air field and met William Keating, the famous pilot. Many have watched his dangerous but thrilling shows. He is now training future rocket ship pilots, and William Colby, his most reliable mechanic, keeps all the ships in order. I went down the field to a coke bar. There I met Eileen Dunphy who was serving the pilots. Across the room I spied Patricia Grehan, the efiicient and charming hostess. I learned afterwards that they owned the small snack bar, and were competing with Ruth Wainwright and Alice jaichner who owned the Coffee Room on the other side of the air strip. l34l journeying back to the city, I saw a huge building which I found to be a bachelors' home. Curious to know who was responsible for the organizing of such a club, I asked the clerk at the front desk. He happened to be an old friend, Donald Bell, who told me that the club was operating at a loss since their president, Robert Appleton, eloped with the well-known Bessie Ingling, H202 manufacturess. I left the bachelors' home dazed, and found myself crossing an extensive campus. One of the students I questioned said that Doris Austin and Jeanne Aaronson were in charge of the institution, and had named it Nutgers University. All this news was overwhelming, so I thought perhaps I would see a movie to help me relax. Norman McDaniels was outside the threatre speaking through a megaphone telling everyone that there were seats. I nonchalantly looked at the billing. There it was! His name in lights! That massive hunk o' man, that class clown, that was Howard Ware! Blanche Mich gave me a ticket and Doris Tyrell ushered me down the aisle about five miles. As I sat down, music was coming from the orchestra pit, and I could hear William Felter and Boyd Reeder, distinguished instrumentalists. When the picture ended, a stage show took place. Mildred Bragg, Charles Pratt, and Audrey Edwards, a current singing group, known as the Saturnavies offered a selection titled Open the Door, Richard. Then the master of ceremonies, Robert Gardiner, announced a dancing group known the planets over. I recognized many faces. Among them were: Olga Korsak, Anna Boychuk, and Dolores Priedel. Following these came a ballet by Fay Colbyg a ballad of the loves of a cowboy by Collen Bricknerg and last, a gay polka by Jennie Blascyzn. As I left the theatre, I thought I recognized another old friend. Looking closer, I saw it to be Virginia Vancza. She said she owned a spacious farm and had already retired. On my way to Saturnds for dinner, I passed a jewelry store. The diamonds were as large as boulders. By reading the sign on the door, I knew it to be owned by Shirley Hall. Now I wonder how she ever acquired that? Down the street I discerned a huge billboard in the distance, reading Get Vincent Aveni's Marvel Book. CThree days for a larger vocabularyj On another billboard there was an advertisement of a new radio program. It was Thomas Newell and George Rowley on their show, Tales of the Sea, for Navy men only. 1 I finally reached Saturno's where I gave Mary Prokopetz, the hat check girl, my coat. jean Keller showed me to my table. Robert Bodine, a millionaire playboy, was giving Glenda Van Hise, a cute waitress, a wink or two, while whistling at Virginia Smith, a Saturnian model. At another secluded table, one was able to see Doris Reed, Margaret Mark, and Betty Downs, current debs, in a dither as to what they should do about that playboy on the other side of the room. Soft music began a lilting and swaying rhythm as Paula Lippincott and June Hamilton offered a new torch song. Bessie Morgan was managing the deluxe dining place and had hired two old friends, Grace Parker and Josephine Ingling to sell boutonnieres to the distinguished guests. When I was ready to leave, I paid Dorothy Rollins, a charming cashier, the amount stated on the bill. A glance at a clock over the doorway told me it was one minute to midnight, so I left Saturno's, light of heart, for I had been in the midst of all my friends. The eventful day had passed, night was upon me. My ship was ready, and it was now time for me to journey back to Earth, and Reality. i35l H? Qt?
