Though perhaps a third of the campus could have cared less, and another third played follow the leader, there was a third group really fired up with the Oskie- bow-wow spirit. Not everyone was keyed to join Up With People, there were no floats lno paradel, and even the weather seemed against us, but the under- dog, that is, the underclass girls won the Powderpuff, and the scintillating Scots flogged the Auggie dogs. The team won every meet. This includes the conference meet and the NAIA regionals. On two separate Saturdays the harriers won a morning contest and then took off to win another in the after- noon. Late in the season, the Scots had a schedule conflict-one meet in Indiana, the other in Minnesota. Instead of withdrawing from one, they decided to squeeze both in. The Scots ran especially fast at Purdue to catch a plane, and trounced the Indiana team. As soon as the harriers landed in Minneapolis, they rushed in high-speed taxis to arrive at the conference meet five minutes late. They ran from the taxis, lined up with the others, and beat the nearest team by 25 points. The remaining games were lost by small margins in hard fought battles. Macalester 63, Wartburg 0 Macalester 6, Washington Univ. 14 Macalester 10, U.of Minn. However, the team was stronger than its record in- dicates as it was plagued by injuries over the entire season. In a sport that depends so heavily on teamwork, at least one regu- lar was out of every game because of an in- jury. Coach Peter Bina hopes this problem can be ironed out in next year's training. In recent years this group has toured schools near-by and across the country, serving as ambassadors for Maca- lester and for the ideals of the literature they perform. This year a select sixty-member group spent Interim Term on a tour of Los Angeles, San Fran- cisco and the Californian coast. This year also marked the final performance of the highly pop- ular Drama Choros Christmas Review. This spirited and mov- ing production, presented by director Mary Gwen Owen, in- cludes humor and ideas and has been the major project of the year for the choros. In coming years it will be presented in the spring. 45 rv --s- fy. all 0 EQf'f 'W 1 ill? 3 'ff 1. sk'-f tw yn 'B' New .f 1,5 M fi' .tim tp F 5 as if CHRISTMAS 1967 What we celebrate is not really Macalesterg We can't wait to get back home- From holy night to wholly commercial, Christmas is not all tinsel and presents- The spirit is love and the diamonds are Tiffany's 46 wsvvswfie Z, f, .um new 'il' 3 HU' . :QWW THE SOCIAL SCENE Silva ,JB 1 ff ' ? , l , if UV Mfif , w 50 INTERIM 4 l 'Qu U ..' lx f.s. , . ., M -4 Nr J , ii 5,.h 'f' 2 ..-' M-- 1-1 During Interim at Macal- ester, students enjoy the snow, make in-depth stud- ies ofthe movies, and oc- casionally crack a book between bridge games... 5l . . . while others desert the campus for Florida marine biology, for skiing, for singing, for rocks and rills, and fruited plains from shore to shore. 52 gg...- VNU. All members of the team will be re- turning for the 1968-69 season. In spite of its outstand- ing record, the team has not yet attained varsity status, and each member pays all his own expenses. SWIMMING TEAM Mac's most renowned athletes, the swimmers, again captured the conference honors and placed a respectable third in the NAIA national meet. DEBATE AND FORENSICS The only Macalester team which competes for a full academic season is our debate and foren- sics team. This year saw the largest number of participants in Macales- ter's history. Competing against over 175 different schools, our debate- forensics team set a new record, bringing home thirty-sixtrophies. This year Prof. Lyman Steil, director of debate, and Dr. Roger Mosvick, director of forensics, broad- ened the program to include television and radio debating and twelve demonstration debates for high school students and civic organizations. Mark Vaught fpictured abovel and jud Barker debated British-style with a pair of Cambridge Uni- versity debaters on whether it is still possible to rise from a log cabin to the White House. The in- formal and often humerous debate was open to the public. Orchestra Under the new direction of Paul Partham, the 32-member orchestra presented a Christmas concert with the Band and Choir, and later travelled to Chicago with a chamber music reportoire. The program was well received by the high school audiences. Next year promises to be even brighter as the members build on the progress achieved this past year, and incorporate incoming freshman talent. ? M Macalester girls spent an evening with their fathers April 27 at the Daddy- Daughter Dinner Dance. Ticket sales surged as lollipops were given as added incentive to pur- chase tickets. But buyers were not suckers, since the event proved fun for both generations. Daddy Daughter Dinner Dance ' ' 'W' ' ' President's Farewell Dance The Macalester College student body and Alumni Association honored Pres- ident and Mrs. Harvey Rice at a semiformal dance and reception March 23, 1968. The dance committee transformed thr Dining Commons in- to an ancient-looking Scottish castle with moat and dragon. Midway through the festive affair, representatives of stu- dents and alumni pre- sented the Rices with gifts, in appreciation of their decade of work at Macalester. 69 International Students During the 1967-68 school year, the Mac- alester student body included 59 people from foreign countries. Ten of these stu- dents were in the International Students Leader Scholarship Program, chosen from nominations of the Experiment for Inter- national Living. The leaders shared a com- mon potential for contributing to both academic and student life, but otherwise were a diverse group who had much to offer to those interested in expanding their international horizons. 4,1 . ,st , tfigtd I Q + .fi , -- ..-.. Course organizers were free to chose any subject area, and overall structure was kept as simple as pos- sible. Classes were general- ly of the open seminarfdis- cussion type. To help students keep down costs for books in regular classes and in the free col- lege, the organizers, in co- operation with No Exit, set up a Book Bank , where students could exchange or buy books for substantially less than regular prices. Goals for next year include expansion to include more students, more definite scheduling for some classes of particular interest, and greater use of faculty and outside resources. -is 1 i X 39 ,i X . fjx .Qf , ,- p Q X fl x X X t ,ff ,ff ., J APRIL 5, 1968 A man had a dream that one day all men might live together in freedom and peace. He lived for his dream and for it he was killed-yet his dream lives on. The thousand students from Macalester, St. Thomas, and St. Catharine's and other adults who marched to the capitol formed one of many demon- strations throughout the coun- try to mourn the death of Dr. Martin Luther King. These silent marches expr-essed the living committment to the work, ideals, and the dream of Dr. King, as opposed to the vio- lence and racism that felled him. fi WF' lc. y 'ff' 'rf in A hot wind troubles Pacific waters. Because this was a political year, political speakers took the spotlight over half the time. 74 Highlighted at the annual Sym- posium on International Affairs was Senator Eugene McCarthy, who outlined his opposition to the administration's Vietnam policy. Also featured were Seymour Topping, Roger Hilsman, Carlos Lacerda and Jerzy Lukaszewski. Students could select from the full po- litical spectrum, from Paul Boutelle to Representative lo- seph Karth, to Saint Paul May- or Byrne, to Lt. Governor james Goetz. Social issues ranged from student power iEd Schwartzb to Vietnam iRobert McAfee Brownl to civil rights iFloyd McKissickl. We were also entertained by Emlyn William's Dylan Thomas Readings, Bar- wick, Armstrong, Smoot, and Maulding in the American Humor Series and Doc Watson and the New Lost City Ramblers, julian Bream, and Ray Charles in concert. Dr. jean Gottman, one of the 20th century's significant thinkers, who wrote Meg- alopolis, among other books, and has consulted for governments around the world, spoke on The Growing City as a Social and Political Process. ln short, too much hap- pened to list comprehen- sively, much less attend comprehensively. Then the troops were amazed as the genius showed his versatility singing his way from Georgia on My Mind to jazzed up Yesterday for the S.R.O. crowd. 77 POLITICAL EMPHASIS WEEK This year's Political Em- phasis Week activity was a simulated Republican National Convention. Gary Hill co-ordinated the planning. Mark Vaught was elected presiding chairman. The delegates nominated Rockefeller after California dramati- cally switched its votes from Reagan. , .J Community Council The Community Council considered and took positions on more far-reaching measures than usual during 1967-68. Academic proposals included pass-fail grading, course evaluation, physical education requirements, and extra- classroom education tfree collegel. Other action dealt with social rights of students Cclosed doorsl, and Publica- tions Board tadding new journals and reorganizing board structurel, and redefinition of the Vice President's role. Contributions from community funds were made to worthy causes of general interest. The Council also com- pleted its routine business of appointments, budgeting, and club constitution ratification. a The 1968 Community Council election campaign proved rather dull with a disappointing lack of candidates and poor voter turnout. One presidential nominee, Barry Knight, ran as a non-candidate in an attempt to inject humor and fun into campus politics. Mark Linder won the overwhelming favor of the electorate. He seeks to battle with traditionalism and vested interest , and en- courages students to take a more active role in working with faculty and administration to bring about construc- tive change. Mark Vaught defeated Charlie Bartz for the Vice Presi- dency. 80 Council Members Mary Ackerman Dave Allen Dean Anderson Charles Bartz Karen Browne Chris Clark Bob Day David Estenson Buddy Ferguson Pauletta Hawkins Cyndy jackson Tim Kirk Dean Kramer Leon Loichle Susan Middleton Mark Linder Meloni Mits Tim O'Brien Steve Rufer Dr. Sandeen Bill Stjern Stu Thorson Bruce Vickers Dr. Mitau After teaching at Macalester for thirty years, Dr. G. Dr. Mitau plans to continue teaching cer- tain courses at Macalester, in addition to his new responsibilities with the six state colleges. Hundreds of alumni joined members of the college community in celebrating Gwensday in her honor on March first. This secretly planned tribute, which was Miss Owen's alone, included programs by alumni, the Drama Choros and the Speech and Theatre Department, three teas and a luncheon at the University Club were punctuated with speeches of tribute and thanks. But Miss Owen's tribute to Macalester was greater than any we could have hoped to give her. She has given us Drama Choros, an art created especially for Macalester. This is our gift from Gwen. 85 'ri Phi Beta Kappa This year Macalester established its own chapter of the academic fraternity Phi Beta Kappa. Mem- bers from the senior class were chosen by the faculty members who belong to the fraternity. Membership is based on academic standing and initiated by faculty recommendation. Students were surprised not to see a ready- to-worship chapel in the middle of the mall after summer vacation. Rumors that it had been cancelled were cancelled when bull- dozers attacked the sod. In spite of mild sabotage to surveyors' stakes and snow fence, the building went up fairly quickly in the cold of winter. Some people still wonder what was wrong with using the Macalester Presbyterian Church, but most agree that the building, when completed will be inspirational, in keeping with the generosity displayed by Mrs. Weyerhauser in giving us the new chapel. ...AND CHAPLAINS Dr. 1. Maxwell Adams retired in December, after twenty years as Macalester's first full time chap- lain. As well as conducting chapel services, Dr. Adams served as a professor of religion and coun- seled students headed toward church vocations. He was instru- mental in securing the new Weyerhauser chapel. In january, the Macalester community wel- comed Dr. john Bodo as the new chaplain. Because of a diversity of experience and background, his ministry lends a new perspec- tive to our Christian community. Chaplain 1.
