D. Van Nostrand Company published Dr. Dorothy Dodges first book, African Politics in Perspective, and Charles Scribner's and Sons published State and Local Government: Politics and Processes by Dr. G. Theodore Mitau, KSTP-TV once again asked Dr. Mitau to he their election night analyst for the 1966 election. XVith the aid of Mac students Stuart Thorsen and Quentin johnson, Professor Mitau was able to develop a formula and system tliarly Voting Estiinatesj which proved enormously successful. At 9:32 p.m. on election night, while incumbent Governor Holvaag was by actual count leading by 40,000 votes, Dr. Mitau and his group were able to estimate on the basis of 1.82 of the precinct returns that the Republican challenger Harold Lcvander seemed to be the victor by 53.32 of the vote. VVhen the full returns had come in, EVE proved accurate within .3 of one percent. The estimates proved equally accurate with respect to the Lieutenant Governor and U.S. Senator races. 23

Trask tackles tangled treaties. 24 The History Department conducted the NDEA Institut in History which was directed by Professor Roger Trasl Dr. Trask also gave a paper at the Upper Midwest Confei ence. Dr. Ernest Sandeen gave a paper at the annua meeting of the American Historical Association in Sar Francisco, and directed the annual Canadian-Americar Conference. Professor Y. Armajani spent the summe: completing the draft of a volume on the Middle East. He also presented a paper at the Midwest Conference o Asian Affairs. Dr. Boyd Shafer, head of the department officiated as Vice President at the meeting of the Inter national Committee of Historical Sciences in Budapest and was one author of a volume on United States history He served as a consultant for the new National Endow- ment for the Humanities. Professor Earl Spangler pub lished a book for young people, The Negro in America and Mr. Henry Bair gave a paper on African history at the Conference of African Specialists. Dr. Hildegarde Iohnson, chairman of the geography de- partment, was SPAN faculty advisor for the Uganda group this year. Her research work is concerned witf missionaries as explorers in Africa. Dr. Matti Kaups is working on completion of his hook on Finnish immigra- tion to the U.S. The geography department is working on a substantial article on the Twin Cities in their changing functionalism.
