In mathematical study the student is encouraged to think creatively and ac- curately, and the precision of his thinking can always be checked by rigorous de- ductive logic. Thus the de- partment can provide situ- ations in which precision of thought takes precedence over easy generalization, cleverness or forcefulness of expression.
