Today, this vvar-torn world tinds nine hundred Macalester people in the armed torces. About halt ot them had graduated, the remainder vvere torn from classes Privates to generals, Macalester is contributing the service ot its tine men and vvomen, From the College eight have given their lives, Killed are William Ruthertord, Henry Ringness, George Voorhis, Phil l-lanson, Alex Kiresuk, Stanley Lienke, John Altons and l-larold Watkins. Distinguished in the service have been John Carey, with the Marine Air Force in the Pacitic, l-larold Larson, vvith the Army Air Force in the Mediterranean, Robert Li Lund, on the Colorado, Dean Tripp, vvith the Atrican invasion torce, Gordon West, with the artillery in Italy, James Rogers, vvith the Army Air Force in England, Wesley Peterson, novv a German prisoner, and Lowell Reeve, with the Air Force in the Pacitic-and many, many others. E ln military service from the taculty ranks are President Turclq, and Protessors l-lolmes, Meserve, Brown, Verhage, and Ahlberg. Sunday afternoon the gym was open for soldier-student recrea- tion and the All-College was held heres Jean Frarey won the Northwest Telegraphic Swimming meet in the pool and lVlax Lerner made even the most anti-convocation- ists sit up and listen. lt attracts everything and every- one from the rumble of Snelling streetcars to Kirk l-lall kitchen odors. 'Left The peaceful repose of the heating plant is a little deceiving. lts daily belching of steam, catching you off guard, makes you think the campus on fire, The degree of excitement with which you receive this sensa- tion is relative to your interest in the class you are at- tending.
