A storv ranging trom the lightest side ot Macalester lite to the most serious, is told in the pictures in this yearbook. You vvill notice a detinite change in the presentation ot Macalester lite depicted in these pages, as compared with that presented in previous biennials. Using a tormula designed to achieve liveliness, the statt placed emphasis on the use ot intormal pic- tures, The tull torce ot the journalism department's photography statt, the largest and best ot any college ot comparable size in the nation, vvas brought into use. Formal senior, tacultv and organization pictures vvere dropped in favor ot informal pictures, and the procedure marks the tirst in which all pictures vvere taken by Macalester students. ln the matter ot malaeup, nevv picture thrills are supplied through the use ot many tull page shots. Cutlines tollovv the Mac Weel4lv's short, punchv, adiectival style. Many nevv teatures have been added. A beautv section including aueens, aueen candidates, the use ot the all college picture and treshman girls' picture are innovations.

Today, this vvar-torn world tinds nine hundred Macalester people in the armed torces. About halt ot them had graduated, the remainder vvere torn from classes Privates to generals, Macalester is contributing the service ot its tine men and vvomen, From the College eight have given their lives, Killed are William Ruthertord, Henry Ringness, George Voorhis, Phil l-lanson, Alex Kiresuk, Stanley Lienke, John Altons and l-larold Watkins. Distinguished in the service have been John Carey, with the Marine Air Force in the Pacitic, l-larold Larson, vvith the Army Air Force in the Mediterranean, Robert Li Lund, on the Colorado, Dean Tripp, vvith the Atrican invasion torce, Gordon West, with the artillery in Italy, James Rogers, vvith the Army Air Force in England, Wesley Peterson, novv a German prisoner, and Lowell Reeve, with the Air Force in the Pacitic-and many, many others. E ln military service from the taculty ranks are President Turclq, and Protessors l-lolmes, Meserve, Brown, Verhage, and Ahlberg. To the honor at these and all other Macalester Service men and vvomen, whose gitts can never be measured, vve humbly dedicate this Macalester student publication ot nineteen hundred and torty-tour. 7
