Three months later the family moved to northern Ohio and a little later settled in Burton, Kansas. Here it was that young Kingery finished the grade schools and then entered high school at Gordon City. He graduated from Emporia Academy and entered college. In 1889 he entered Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana, grad- uating in 1893. The next year Mr. Kingery taught science and mathematics in Indiana and spent the year following at Trini- dad, Colorado, assisting in a printing office. In February, 1896, he was called to Macalester College, where he taught science and mathematics. Since 1910 he has held the chair of mathe- matics. It is always hard to tell why a man is respected or loved, and doubly hard when he is both respected and loved. Though naming over virtues too often obscures rather than reveals, we wish to go on record for David Newton Kingery's influence on us students. VVe all know that he hates cant, despises lazi- ness, scorns cowardice, makes dishonor contemptible, is indif- ferent to mere words, forms or usages. On the other hand he loves truth, simple honesty between man and man, frankness, courtesy--he loves a good jest and an hour of quiet companion- ship, which often, for the student, means increased enthusiasm in scholarship or some definite gain in self-control, he loves study and has the courage and the humility of the man who knows. Thus, quietly, genially, and all unconsciously he con- tinues to stimulate and mould the characters as well as the minds of us all. We, the Class '14, wish Professor Kingery many years of service in the college he has helped to create and to exalt. 7
