Services in the community include activities for the children at Illinois School for the Visually Impaired and for those at Day Care Centers and at nursing homes. Theta Sigma sponsors the annual Secret Admirer ' s Day in February, ornament and bake sales, a taffy apple sale at Homecoming, and holds a dinner for the parents in April. On March 8th, we were charged $5 in labor fees for a clogged sink. Because our sink recently underwent major repair, we thought the problem could be something more serious and so we didn ' t want to mess with it. So we called the Physical Plant. For less than $5 we could have easily bought a bottle of Liquid Plumber and did it ourselves. The men at the Physical Plant are supposedly paid a salary by the college. Why then are they charging extra for labor which is done in or to college buildings that come under their jurisdic- tion? Are they participating in a separate business venture as a way of earning cash? If so, they must be making a mint at Norris and Blackstock. There are a lot of things that need repair around Rutledge. The sinks on second and third floor do not drain, the buzzer system is kaput and the floodlights around the dorm haven ' t been working all year. It ' s a lot safer walking from the library to the dorm when you can see where you ' re going. But if Physical Plant can ' t repair these things without extra labor charges, it would be cheaper to put up with these nuisances than pay extra for what they ' re already being paid for. — Becky Steffa —The Daily Other 79 RELIGIOUS LIFE COMMITTEE The Religious Life Commit- tee provides and encourages participation in religious ac- tivities on campus. ANIMAL HOUSE INSPIRES CHAOS IN McCLELLAND At approximately 4:50 p.m. last night, at a prearranged signal, a food fight broke out in McClelland Hall, apparently in an effort to emmulate a scene in the movie Animal House. The entire endeavor was completed in less than a minute. In addition to food, plates and trays were also hurled and two chairs were broken. After the excitement was over, one half of the dining hall was closed down as dining hall employees attempted to clean the mess. Director of Food Service, Steve Nechvatal, said it took over an hour for preliminary clean up operations to be completed. Nechvatal said the food service put extra effort into last night ' s meal, borrowing a charcoal grill to barbeque the chicken, and he felt that in lieu of the evenings activities the effort was a wasted one. Hall said that Dave Sandoval found the rat, and when he arrived it was huddled in a corner in the stairwell between the basement and first floor. They left the rat lying in a pool of blood to call Physical Plant. Hall said that when he told them I just killed a rat in Michalson House, Physical Plant replied, Oh, uh, well, we ' ll call the rodent control. When he asked them to remove it, he said, they told him to get the maid. Wednesday night, following their Halloween fashion show, the girls from Kendall 2 bravely went into Norris House to show the guys their costumes. The girls thought that the Animals would appreciate seeing the outfits that they had made and thought they ' d give a friendly reception. However, Kendall 2 found that it ' s very obvious when the Animals don ' t like what they see. They started pushing the girls out of the hallway into the street, while shouting obscenities at them. One girl ' s metal waste basket, used as part of her costume, was totally dented, as a result of being smashed into a wall. Another girl ' s broom was broken. The attack wasn ' t exactly good for another girl ' s umbrella, either. Not only was her umbrella smashed, she landed on the posterior end of her body. One of the girls turned around to find that her friend, who was on rollerskates and couldn ' t es- cape, was being carried up the stairway by one of the Animals. It also serves as an outlet for the cultural expression of the black students at MacMurray College. From these basic purposes, the B.S.U. has become very involved in community action projects designed to make others aware of the problems facing the Black man. Because these students have had the courage to stand up and fight, many of their aspirations have been realized, like the introduction of curriculum; and the founding of the Martin Luther King Library. Since its inception, the B.S.U. has grown and its ranks are still swelling, promoting the cultural awareness of the Black man. One of their most successful community programs is the Educational Recreation program which includes black children from the Jacksonville community. These students are involved, also, in the annual Talent Show and Fashion Show. 105 Belles Lettres, founded in 1851, is the oldest women ' s society at MacMurray. Originally a literary society, its members now work with the children at the Illinois School for the Deaf. BLACKSTOCK BOYS GET BASIC TRAINING The men of Blackstock snowed their neighbors Monday night with their first snow panty raid. Kendall was attacked at 1 1:20 p.m. Led by their resident assistants and head resident, the men of Blackstock took over. One of the biggest panty raiders was Jeff Senzel ' 82. Senzel came out of Kendall at the end of a hard night with 25 pairs of panties, nine bras, and three sleeping tops. A total of about 75 pairs of underwear were swiped from the Kendall women, but this did not stop them. Kendall then retaliated. They came for jocks; however, the Blackstock men were ready. They had the showers going. When the girls came in to raid the jocks, the jocks raided them with a nice shower, fully clothed. Barb Mitchell ' 82 was the first to feel the wrath of the Blackstock men as she was picked up and taken to the second floor for her shower and powdering. Sights of men ' s and women ' s underwear were all around campus, everywhere from the Campus center to Kendall windows. When it was over, however, the men did admit that it was only a trial run and when the snow sticks, they will be up campus. — The Daily Other CONCERT BAND The MacMurray College Concert Band performed this year under the direction of Mr. Allen Dilley. The 40 piece band presented concerts for Fall and Spring Parent ' s Weekends and several other times during the year. This year the destination of the Annual Spring Tour was Washington, D.C. The Band is composed of music majors, college students and area residents. The 78-79 band presented an opportunity for many talented musicians to be a member of a performing group. ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA Alpha Lambda Delta is a honor society for women. To be eligible for membership, a MacMurray College woman must have a minimum grade point of 3.5 during her first semester in college. The women who meet this requirement and wish to join Alpha Lambda Delta are initiated at a formal ceremony during the spring semester.
