Main Hall — gone. Beecher Street — gone. Hardtner Gym — unused. Kendall House — all women. Blackstock House — all men. oddly, things were not the same, new grass seed sprouting. 1 new shrubbery — struggling. new administration building — thriving, new education complex — amazing, new administrators — experimenting. a year of games being fought, though the outcome didn ' t matter. a year of groups being formed, though the I format was absurd. a year of issues being raised, not for •-: practicality, but for principle. a year of individuals, somehow surviving, enjoying despite all. the pieces were carefully laid, the puzzle prepared 10 One change in Mac that, as a senior, makes me most unhappy is the segregation of the freshmen from the rest of the college. I can remember how much I learned by living with upperclassmen, especially in that first year. I have not been able to share with these new people what I have learned so that they may evaluate my ideas and shape their own. I do not feel my influence is a corrupting one, nor do I think anyone can protect a person of college age from a corrupting influence. Therefore, I still cannot see what is gained by the Treshman Experience ' , I can only feel a loss. — a senior I think if the students are unsettled with these changes it should be a challenge to them to work toward what they think would be realistic goals, and then set about making themselves heard. I speak from two different vantage points and would like to add that what people want and what they need are sometimes poles apart, and one should be realistic from this point of view. Since college is a learning experience socially as well as academically, and maturity is the focal point in both these areas, there should be freedom for growth. If the changes are stifling the growth in either area, then the changes should be reversed. — anonymous I believe that one of the ' cancers ' of the MacMurray Campus is the unhealthy atmosphere which pervades the dorms. To be more explicit, I have had many complaints that the dorms are noisy at the times which the concerned students want to study. If the students cannot provide their fellow students with respect, then I feel the administration must take steps to improve the situation. I have been given the impression also that a disregard for established rules such as drinking and indulgence in drugs have been hurting the image of the other students here who long for a more mature regard for law and order. — a faculty member I feel that the freshman experience and the upperclass living groups are positive changes, and they have much to offer if only you will take advantage of them. The main thrust of both experiences is to help the students direct themselves in a living-learning experience toward a self -satisfying education. For all of us, Students, faculty, administration, and staff, we can make better progress with an attitude of less confrontation and more cooperation. I am optimistic about MacMurrays future; I wouldn ' t want to feel any other w ay. At the beginning, (or even before the school year of 1975-76), I was wondering how the dorm changes would affect the attitudes of the men students. Realizing how soon students com{5 rehend just what is happening, I wondered what their reactions would be. But as is generally the case, most of them accepted gratefully, usually with a smile and with the acknowledgement that the administration was making the changes with the hopes that it would be for the benefit of the students. It has been my observation, during the seven years I ' ve been at MacMurray, that the students are great — willing to cooperate in about any way they can. , Days of Discovery new vistas new faces new experiences initiation into a whole new world exploration of surrounding and self declaration of new independences Winter a scream in the hall ... a bang at the door ... a panty raid in rutledge winter like a vibrant face-slap in the clear dark night. there were times to toaste and teams to cheer, there were drinks to down and dreams to build. there were facts and finals and failings and friends, and colds and cards and cameras and (with the help of carols and angels and trimmings) Christmas dazzling, displaying all our talents, our tans, our sof tballs, our serves, our laughter, our loafing, our graduation, our gradepoints, our keggers, our kin . . . 102 ADMISSIONS COUNSELOR !_ _ _ , . -. • MATT JOR.DAM f.K- ADMISSIONS COOMSilORS Row 1: Randy Hocking Mike Ducharme Randall Gibson Jim Ofcarcik Jeff Aldrich Dave Pack Doug Stelzer Row 3; Ed Pederson Coach Bob Gay Greg Granato Wendall Sweetland Jack Richburg Row 2: Bob Price Curtis Smith Mike Skrivan Gary Stephens Boz Bjelopetrovich Chuck Bernard Keith Buechner John Schaus Mike Taylor Dave Lund in Derrick Phillips Mike Sheehan Tom Origitano Soccer Volleyball VOLLEYBALL MAC OPP 9-15, 15-13, 15-10 Lincoln Land 11-15, 11-15 11. Both administration and students were entangled in deci- sions and postponements and rhetor ical speaking which left living arrangements up in the air until mid May and bitter feelings among many upperclassmen who strove very hard to maintain the status quo. How- ever, they did not prevail and August 75 brought some 200 freshmen to a new experimental living arrangement of which they were completely unaware. Referred to by many as a throwback to the 1950 ' s, the issue at hand was the creation of college president John J. Wittich. Wittich desired to create a living situ- ation in which freshmen would be both protected and eased into the different life style of college, while also providing them with an added enrichment in counsel- ing and other services. He believed that freshmen dorms would establish lasting unity among the classes, and create a non-alcoholic atmosphere in which fresh- men would reap maximum benefits from studies. To assist in this general transition program as well as with academic problems, a group of upper- classmen known as peer counselors were specially trained in counseling and in special problems, and assigned to live on floors in the freshman dorms. These counselors were required to keep a journal of their work, see that freshman intervisitation and other rules were enforced, as well as provide availa- ble time to counsel the freshmen. Freshman dorms gave the freshmen the chance to know each other in order to function as a class. Many social functions such as dances, a dinner with trustees, and a semi-formal dinner dance were encouraged for the freshmen. They were also pro- vided with free t-shiu upon arrival on campus much to the dismay of the expense ridden upper- classmen. 121 Inrervisitation hours in the dorms at first met with a great vocal cry from the freshmen. In a survey con- ducted by members of the class and turned in to the administration, most freshmen violently objected to this infringement on their freedom. As a result, two more days of inrervisitation were added in the later part of the year. As the program was still in the experimental stage, it was continued into the ' 76- ' 77 school year. Upper- classmen by this point felt that this new experience did nothing more than label and segregate the campus into two distinct groups; freshmen vs. upperclass- men. As most freshman classes are 200 level introduc- tory courses, most juniors or seniors met freshmen during extracurricular activities, the first week of initi- ation, or not at all. On the other hand, freshmen, realizing their favored position in the eyes of the administration, made the most of it. This attitude was best exempli- fied during campaigning rhetoric, the nature of which suggested that upperclassmen were not responsible and freshmen should be elected into the major respon- sibility positions for the 1976-77 school year. Ultimately, the final evaluation of this experimen- tal situation will be left to the future classes at Mac- Murray. The debate continued through the year. The freshman dorms often seemed to be strongholds of the vices they tried to protect freshmen from, and the deep rift and sensitivity between the two new groups on campus made most students feel negatively about the whole thing. But the freshmen ' s early vocal outcry quickly dwindled due to either satisfaction or surren- der, and the first year of the Freshman Experience at MacMurray College became history. This year ' s upperclassmen have been guinea pigs in a sociologically based experiment in living arrange- ments, called living groups. In theory, these groups consist of idealogically — similar students whose life styles and interests lie in areas of compatibility. The top priority of these groups u ould be the growth and inter-relationship of members within and therefore groups should not object to living space assigned to their group. However, in practice in its first year at MacMurray, groups ignored the high ideals of similar life style and chose to arrange their groups by the mere matter of convenience in where they choose to live for the 75- ' 76 school year. Therefore, conflicts arose both within some of the groups, and between the theory and prac- tice of this group living arrangement. Upon returning to the campus in autumn, upper- r classmen discovered that although MSA representa- tion would be continued on a floor-by-floor basis, intramural competition was m effect by groups. Under , this system of competition, points would be awarded- to each group for its standing in the intramural com- petition, leadership position of group members in the general campus, and scholarship. These three types of points were then to be totalled for each group, with the winning group then to be presented with the Pres- idential Cup. This new emphasis on the group program and dis- prtion of the intramural tradition of interdorm team formation caused much controversy during September and October. However, students prevailed in this case, as the traditional team selection procedure for IM w gone back to after boycott of the games effectively halted the new IM procedure. Group Living 123 The whole philosophy of the group living plan then fell fairly dormant until the procedure for spring housing and room selection began. Once again the whole bag of worms concerning group ideals, group leaders, screening committees, etc., was released. Once again groups seemed to be forming due to living arrangements rather than common ideals. For exam- ple, any man wanting to live up campus was forced to try to get into Jane 3rd, while any woman wanting to live down campus was asked to conform to either Michaelson 1st or 3rd. Thus the belief that the room you lived in made no difference to your life, so long as you were with your closest peers, was not fully adhered to by the students, and thus living group arrangements were not a smashing success. Again, being experimental in nature, this system was carried on into the ' 76-77 school year. The ulti- mate decision as to the pros and cons of these arrange- ments will be judged in future years. 124 Administration 125 Apathy has been working its way into the hearts of MacMurray College students. The source — a lack of trust, faith, and respect for the administration. In con- versation with students for preparation of this article, the same theme was repeated over and over again: We ' re just not listened to! Freshmen who strove to have intervisitation extended wrote individual letters to the college presi- dent only to receive what they felt an unjustified answer — no Students in Jane ing the coed floors reduced from three to one which 5 ' ? also complied with Title IX regulations. The new plan ' would have given women more living space down - - jj ., campus (choice of 3 women ' s floor vs. 5 floors of H r- upperclassmen) and men a greater choice up campus j (2 floors of men vs. 4 for women rejeaed outright. .C S Freshmen were promised $1000 per dorm for social Saivity. All their plans were scrapped and replaced . ' «p|j  ' ' •bV conibined dinner-dance in McClelland. Students and prospectives on their way to the thea- ter or Fine Arts building spent the best part of 20 weeks sloshing through mud around Main hole debris. The college remained at the whim of a contractor who began demolition before Christmas and completion after spring break. ? Only persistent calls by library staff persuaded physical plant working to lay a makeshift path of step- ping stones over the Beecher landscaping project so that students could reach the library. ■In general, students felt that they were the helpless commodity in a war of non-communication. Campus pride has reached Jo Jcvel. Apathy was definitely .j- on the rise. JS sS ' MACMURRAY COLLEGE HONOR SOCIETY Douglas W. Beal James K. Claflin Susan B. The world is filled with little people Content with where they are; Now knowing joys success can bring. No will to go that far. Yet, in this world there is a need For people to lead the rest. To rise above the average life. To giving of their best. Would you be one who dares t o try When challenged by the task. To rise to heights you ' ve never seen or is that too much to ask. ' ' This is your day — a world to win. Great purpose to achieve. Accept the challenge of your goals And in yourself, BELIEVE. You will be proud of what you ' ve done When at the close of day You look back on your battles won Content you came this way. -submitted by Karen Michelle Landon 161 TERRY A. And now, I live for that man who dies for me. He rose again, to be my savior and Lord. To live in me and through me. Two years ago, his father gave me a song. Some of the verses say: I can sense the pain that Jesus feels, a tear that ' s in his eyes, as he calls out to the people, but they only pass him by. People need a love that only God can give. But they keep searching in the dark. They keep looking for what life can give, and only miss the mark. He ' s still waiting, so patiently, to guide you to God ' s love. But you have to ask for that gift which he wants to give so much. This college has helped me to understand many temporal things. This will help in my ministry. Now I must learn more about the spirit- ual part of eternity, to help show the way to my fellow people. — submitted by John Hamm KATHLEEN A.
