The TARTAN a Pictorial Essay concerning the PEOPLE of MAC MURRAY COLLEGE in JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS for the academic year 1973-1974 CONTENTS: An introductory thesis. The faculty ' s remarks. A look at the people; The allegiances they create, The honors they receive. An observance of the Arts. The athletic experience. Our patron cents. A comment in conclusion. 3 The liberal and pre -professional education offered at Mac Murray seeks to develop the whole man; his powers of precise observation, logical thought, and clear expression, and his sensitivity to his fellow man, his esthetic awareness, and his social and spiritual concerns. 1 The college experience should foster the development of students as inquir- ing humane persons, should guide students to gain a sense of purpose beyond their personal lives, and should enable them to enjoy significant futures. We believe these goals are consistent with MacMurray ' s aim to produce graduates who can and will make significant contributions to life, not only in social con- cerns, but also in personal relationships. 2 Will we be able, in the years hence, to see that our college experience has accomplished the afore -mentioned goals? Or will we venture that such sights are unattained, or even unattainable? Let us search behind the above ideal, to the real, and examine the practical application of such a philosophy — . 129948 Henry Pfeiffer Library Mac Murray Coliege Jacksonville, Illiaoii 1, 1973-74 College Catalogue, page 3. 2. JOHNJ.WITTICH To the Seniors: We at Mac Murray College spend much time thinking and discussing the central purpose of the college: to prepare our graduates for a lifetime of intellectual thought, rational be- havior, and service to others. -- But only the foundations are formal when you complete your college years. The enduring hope of those of us who remain on the cam- pus - and of the large number of alumni and friends over the world is that the members of the class of 1974 have used their campus experiences to develop high standards and skills of thought and behavior. This hope, and our affectionate pride in you, is bolstered by our knowledge of you as persons. May God ' s blessings attend you all. John J. In this spirited place, one should be prepared to be doused with wa- ter at any time; if it ' s not water it could be a hall soccer puck or an accidental kick due to the Gene Kelly ' s dancing and wail- ing Bette Midler style up on third floor. Once a zoo, always a zoo, and the third floor has kept the party image up with ' 50s costumes and group singing and of course that something extra that makes a party jump! The rest of the dorm is not to be ig- nored, as each floor has its own personality. Ruled by Bob and Betsy Albright, Blackstock house is certainly a castle -ful of lovely spirited ladies. JANE HALL Jane Hall, an experimental example of the new trend in college housing, permits male and female occupation of suites in the same wing on the same floor. Hours of course, are difficult to maintain; no one admits to being any worse for it. Spontaneous floor parties maintain the family spirit in the dorms; residents have adopted one another in adapting to each other. If Jane Hall- coed, must go down in history --it should be considered a successful innovation, long over-due. Al Tagomori, head resident of Jane Hall, has had no major complaints as to the handling of the dorm. 91 KATHRYN HALL Katy, housing all women resi- dents, is perhaps one of the more re- clusive dorms on campus. However, by chance one might discover that those hours of secrecy, are not spent in solitary; the girls are gregarious and giddy, preferring pizza and puz- zle parties, tap-dancing and all night talk fests to somber lives of study and slumber. Are the girls keeping head resident Sally Conway awake? KENDALL HOUSE Kendall House had a rough time of it this first year of coed-housing. Each floor pretty much remained autonomous but dorm spirit was at an all time low first semester. Remember the Emmi- grants ; the third floor lassies swapped rooms and rumors about as many dif- ferent ways as one can play solitaire. Invasions in the showers by some mis- guided first floor men caused some ex- citement, but the teasing back about the mock wedding evened up the score a lit- tle. Life lightened second semester though. Some of the fears and prejudices were overcome. Hostilities were nearly forgotten as the ice began to thaw. Could head resident, Carl Jardine have had something to do with it? i MICHALSON HOUSE Michalson House is another dorm on campus where once you are in, you never want to leave. It ' s famous for its privacy, yet is also one of the most hospitable dorms on campus. Housing two floors of men and two of women, it boasts that delicate balance called unity. House father David House en- joys the people until the infamous dorm parties kick off at Christmas time. Lounge dances, fires glowing on crossword puzzles or bridge games, or a pianist trying to get notes out of our piano are almost nightly or monthly occurrences in the main lounge. THE MOST CREATIVE 96 I NORRIS HOUSE What is there to be said about Norris House, the only remaining all mens dorm on campus ? They definitely do not want the fairer sex inva- dnig their quarters -unless specifically invited of course. Traditionally referred to as the Norris Animals , the nickname is now giving way to the home of the soccer jocks and study jocks . This helps explain the numerous injuries plaguing the dorm, although the Good Doctor ' s medicines still work best when found in the weekend punch bowl. Play- ing games is what the Norris residents like best whether it ' s with a Risk board, a deck of cards, or a ball. Bruce Scheid is the head resident of Norris House this year. 99 RUTHLEDGE HALL Ann Rutledge, the only dorm on campus which has always housed coeds, is often regarded as the traditional ladies ' residence. It used to be the elites t dorm on campus, and must still retain that aura to some extent as during last year ' s lottery, it was one of the first dorms to be filled up with its quota of upperclassmen. Those that get into the dorm rarely, if ever, try and move elsewhere on campus. Rutledge is also the only dorm on campus to retain any signified class rooms and faculty offices, as the English department also calls Ann home. Rutledge Hall is watched over by Ms. Constance Booth, another well known campus personality. She ' s always willing to do anything for her girls, and wouldn ' t want to rule over any other nest but hers. 100 101 STUDENT ACTIVITIES COMMISSION This student organization co- ordinates activities of intellectual, esthetic, and social value. Sec- ond semester activities included 14 films, four dances, a night at the races, campus bingo, and a Y overnighter. All programs are suggested by the student body and implemented by one of the eight SAC committees. Chairman . . Treasurer . . Secretary . . , . Dave Loder . Brian Arimura . Gil Opferman, this year ' s president, says that being a member of MSA means to work, to lead, and to provide for other students. . . It ' s a hard job and often times our efforts are intangible and frustrated. But it feels good, every once in a while to get something done. The pur- pose of M. S. A. as recorded in its constitution is also its objective in actuality: to create within the student body a sense of unity and responsibility and to formulate and execute policies which concern student life and activities. V. P. of the year in wrestling hails from Palatine, Illinois. Nick- named, Glook by his peers, the 142 pounder had a 33-5 won loss rec- ord for the season. He was elected the most out- standing wrestler at the Mac, Wheaton, and North Cenral Invitationals dur- ing his fine career, which added to his high standing in the Mac Hall of Fame . This mat man earned 135 points toward the year- end point total for the col- lege by himself. Hopefully, he will be able to carry out his future plans and coach wrestling so as not to put his talent to waste. KEN GLUECK OF PALATONE, IL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER OF THE YEAR George Murray, 1974 co -cap- tain was voted the Most Coura- geous Player this year because of his determination to overcome a severe knee injury and continue to improve his wrestling skills at the same time. He must have pulled it off as his won loss record for the season this year was 27-5, he was voted Athlete of the Month in Janu- ary, and continued to wrestle him- self into 3rd place at the Lake Forest Invitational and Most Valu- able Player at the Mac Murray Invitational. Next year our 158 pounder will be doing graduate work at Sangamon State University in Sprin ield to further his sociolog- cal undergraduate studies, while at the same time work for the I. B. I. He came from Carol Stream, Illi- nois where he wrestled all through high school. Guess practice does make perfect-or as close as one can get. Pretz was the tobbacco-chewing Highlander catcher who directed the clan ' s de- fense for four years and will be sorely missed. The 5 ' 8 right hander should also be recognized for his sardonic sense of humor as the most walked player. Rick the Rocket holds the Mac career record for BB ' s (58). PI 176 Mac Murray ' s baseball Highland- ers finished a disappointing season by winning three of its last four en- counters. After taking two from St. Louis University (4-1, 6-2) they cropped their finale to tournament bound Western Illinois University (18-1). The season marked the end of sterling careers for five senior start- ers ---Rick Pretz, Curt Grote, Dain Meyers, Jeff Kinneman, and Ron Streiker. With the loss of these five starters. Coach Bob Gay ' s 1975 team will need to rely on more inexperi- enced players. A native of Il- linois, Dr. Kanatzer earned the bachelor ' s degree, with honors, at Eastern Illinois University. Mas- ter ' s and Doctoral Degrees were re- received at the University of Illinois with a major in protozoology and minors in bacteriology and crypto- gamic botany. I The student body recognizes this man for his contributions far beyond the field of science. In his commencement speech, the Dean stated that the primary function of the liberal arts college is to un- settle settled minds; Dr. Kanatzer always meets this challenge un- equivically. His sensitive wit and unselfish compassion shall ever be engraved in the minds of those who know him. The campus community I honors the man, who has been able to maintain his optimism in the hindsight of seven decades, who respects each man for his in- dividuality, and who communicates with every syllable spoken. Not a god but a man, capable of fatigue though not defeat. Dean Kanatzer ' s aspirations could well be our own. American Yearbook Company The 1974 TARTAN is a pictoral editorial contrasting the ideal Mac student with the majority, the backstage candids with the final poses. In working on the yearbook, we have found both. Our thanks to Tony Licata, Bob Klingele, and Public Relations who helped in a pinch in living up to our concept of the ideal. To those whose pledges never quite materialized due to other more important priorities , this annual does not belong to you. For all you on campus who BEST know how to run a yearbook and are so willing to criticize its production with your not-so-unique sugges- tions, why were YOU not on the staff? It ' s been an exasperating strug- gle but OUR yearbook is complete. It is only through the concern of a few that the 1974 TARTAN is pre- sented to you, the student body. It ' s been an experience we shall never forget. Our Last Hurrah goes to Dave Zak for accepting the editorship for next year. GOOD LUCK! Sheri Mize Wrightam and Jane Radunzel 232 I
