Wittich to pay tribute to Dr. Percy L. Julian. In recognition of the great humanitarian and scientific contributions of Dr. Julian, the College ' s chemistry facility was named the Percy Lavon Julian Hall of Chemistry. The Symposium theme was Science and Education in the Service of Man. The Friday morning session included the presentation of three technical papers: Steroid Paper: Dr. Frank B. Cotton Chemical Research Department G. D. Searle Co. Chicago, Illinois Indole Alkaloid Paper: Dr. Bernhard Witkop Department of Health, Education and Welfare The afternoon session dwelt on the theme Science in Society-Unfinished Business. Dr. Lloyd Cooke, Director of Urban Affairs Mr. Norman Applezweig Consultant New York, New York Dr. Reuben L. MacMurray College is deeply indebted to these men for the planning of this signifi- cant event and tribute to Dr. Percy Lavon Julian. 157 158 159 Mr. Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., Chairman of New York ' s Metro- politan Museum of Art, received the honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from MacMurray October 7, 1971, during a special Fine Arts Convocation held on the campus. The convocation culmi- nated a three-day Fine Arts Fes- tival which was scheduled in conjunction with the College ' s 125th anniversary observance. 162 Dr. John J. Wittich Preside Tartan: Since assuming the presidency of Mac- Murray College, what changes have you seen in student attitudes at Mac and elsewhere? Wittich: During the years preceding this one, many students felt that the war in Vietnam, the problems of the poor, world problems of popula- tion and disease, and other items were such that all thinking or aware persons should be unhappy — even hostile. These attitudes have been chang- ing. Current students are not employing activist methods to make change. Perhaps this is be- cause violent or irrational methods have not worked. Now they are more willing to work through the system and are supportive of others, even faculty or administrators, who may be initia- tors of change. In my opinion, they are not apa- thetic, they are realistic. Even though students appear to be more playful and capricious and somewhat happier than in the immediate past, they continue to be responsible and constructive, though less radical. For exam- ple, giving blood is inconvenient, time consuming, frightening to some, and unpleasant to others. But the MacMurray community had almost a third of the entire student body offering to become blood donors and to organize and to administer the blood drive while it was on campus during the first semester. 164 Tartan: What further changes do you anticipate in years to come? Wittich: The issues of the core curriculunn are said to be timeless and to be relevant for any age and for any period. Whether they are really effective in changing persons depends, of course, upon the imagination and I effort of the teacher and the desire and willingness of j the student to make the necessary connections be- tween timeless abstractions and today ' s concrete reali- 1 ties. A change in this area will be that specific steps will j be taken to insure both teaching and desire to learn in I the humanities area. Without these steps, the College ' will move in the direction of all other colleges to pro- vide a smorgasbord of liberal arts offerings. i MacMurray will be offering opportunities for specializa- ' tion, too, but they will be based upon and related to a central goal of developing the total humane personali- I ty. Broader approaches will also develop which are re- lated tosthe needs of the day. Community planning, I urban studies, ecology, and other interdisciplinary 1 areas will be offered. These studies will probably be im- continuing discussion by faculty and students of the value, ingredients, and support for effective teaching. Tartan: In your opinion, is the small, private liberal arts college still in a position to boast benefits not available at larger schools? Wittich: Yes, only at small colleges has it been possi- ble, at least thus far, for faculty to lift up and continually emphasize a central goal for the whole institution. Why am I here at this college? is an important ques- tion even when viewed from a narrow economic angle! The small, privately supported college appears to be able to produce persons who believe that they did re- ceive something special at the college as witnessed by their continual support of the private sector and by their continual self-questioning and searching for meaning in their lives after they leave the campuses of such colleges. Tartan: What is the usual statement you make in year- books every year? ' ' portant in providing an overview and motivation for the continued specialization needed to solve the very com- plicated problems of the 1970 ' s and 1980 ' s. Tartan: How about perceptions of students of academ- ic opportunities? Wittich: The change of the College to provide more flexibility of choice in the curriculum appears to have increased the academic interest and motivation of some students. On the other hand, students still voice their great interest in good teaching (and dismay in poor teaching) by their careful and persistent efforts to evaluate courses. The resulting publication is part of a Wittich: I say this same thing every year only because it remains to be true. This senior class, today ' s stu- dents, tomorrow and forever alumni, has joined with me to put forward our College. With those who have gone before and those who remain Dehind, we are bound together in a most noble endeavor, part of which includes the development of MacMurray College as an instrument for human service and good. Hence- forth, you are MacMurray College, and MacMurray College is you. Our faith, our hopes and our confi- dence reside in you and with you as we wish you God- speed. 165 1166 Mr. Michael J.
