mfafecl .gyudfecb meparfmenf Although it may be a common idea that vocational high schools teach nothing but trade, the girls at Mabel Dean Bacon Vocational High School know that they receive academic and commercial training as well. The related subiects department is one ot the departments that take care of these needs which include textiles, biology, cosme- tology, mathematics, typing and art. They aim at understanding the trade and the world. A girl whose trade is dressmaking gains through the study of textiles and art. The textiles class offers information on yarn manufacture, structure of materials, different types of cloth, the purpose of each, and the use and nature of fabrics. The art department helps the girls with designs and flat pattern and draping, blending colors and fabrics, and developing a sense of beauty. The beauty culture girls gain from Cosmetology in which they learn about bone struc- ture, faces, skin, finger nails, and other parts of the body. They learn the principles of massage, make-up, and other aspects of their trade. ln art, they create hair styles, learn the rules of color and design in make-up, and develop other skills to help them when they graduate. Subiects which teach material valuable in business are typing, mathematics, and business practice which give the fundamentals of good commercial management. The science classes are important not only for their trade information but for their information about foods, health and other things in daily life. They make us both better technicians and better citizens. lb
