During this time. and under the guidance of your teachers, you have learned to understand and be loyal to our American ideals. During your senior year you had a wonderlul opportunity to demonstrate our American Way ol Lile to our guests, .lale Ergunlxan, a high school student from Anlcara, Turlcey. and Gabriella Gisci, a high school student from Rome, Italy. ln your classrooms, during your club meetings and lunch periods. and at your senior prom. you had the opportunity of showing them that you judge people by their character and ambi- tion and not by their race or creed. It is now your responsibility as Americans to continue to protect our American Way ol Lile by talcing an active part in many social and civic atlairs so that the blessings ot our American Democracy will be preserved and strengthened in this country and spread afar so that others may enjoy the freedoms that have been your Ameri- can Heritage. l congratulate you. I wish you a very happy and successful lkuture. MARY CASSIDY Principal A A t'A'A A 'A 'A 306660 ii0l'l We, the graduates ol 1949, herehy dedicate to the people of the world our one great dream. Vve, who are leaving school to enter a trouhled and confused world, realize that all the people of the world are hoping as we are lor one great shining dream. We now join the adult world in this dream, a dream which we lmow we can never realize hy ourselves as separate individuals. All of us together, however, all those in the world who share our longing, can work to realize it together. We trust that we young people, gifted as we have been with youth, idealism, and the understanding that we have acquired at school, may contribute something of value which will bring us all nearer to the happy life of peace for all. now and forever. The change of name of one of our country,s oldest vocational high schools from the Nlanhattan High School of VVomen's Garment Trades to the Mabel Dean Bacon Vocational High School is a tribute to the accomplishments of an outstand- ing humanitarian. Mabel Dean Bacon held office in many civic and welfare organizations. She was active in the Vanderbilt Clinic Auxiliary, the Day Camp, the Social Service Committee of Presbyterian Hospital, the New York Tuberculosis and Health Asso- ciation, and the Social Service of St. 1..ulce's Hospital. In 1916 lxflrs. Bacon was appointed to the Board of Child Welfare by Mayor Mitchell. She served with the American Red Cross overseas during and after the first World Vvar. Mrs. Bacon served with distinction as a member of the Advisory Board of the Board of Educa- tion of the City of New Yorlc, the Public Education Association, and the Depart- ment of Health Committee, which initiated, sponsored and carried to a successful conclusion the health demonstration conducted in the West Side Continuation School from 1926 to 1929. This led to the development of health techniques and services, later installed and successfully operated in all vocational schools. In the course of her service as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Advisory Board on Vocational Education, Mrs. Bacon worlced continuously until the time of her death to promote the health of school children. Her interest resulted in the development of health services by which very child in the vocational schools is given a complete physical examination annually, an important aid to proper vocational placement of pupils on the basis of physical capacity or handicaps. As chairman of the Joint Committee on Education, Mrs. Bacon was a prime mover in the survey made of the continuation schools. She was instrumental, too, in securing approval by the Instructional Affairs Committee of the Board of Educa- tion for the course in nursery education. Nlrs. Bacon's devotion to educational and welfare causes was ever an incentive to her colleagues. Her contributions in civic and community worlc are among the most valuable recorded in the history of the Vocational Division. The example of service set by Mabel Dean Bacon provides an inspiration for students and teachers of the school now honoring her memory. The exercises in honor of the new name of our school toolc place in our own newly painted building on January 19, 1949. First lcnown as the Manhattan High School of VVomen,s Garment Trades, and now as the Mabel Dean Bacon Voca- tional High School, our school has had a unique history. In November 1902, the Manhattan Trade School for Girls, the first trade school 20 for girls in the United States. was opened. Although not worlcing people themselves. the founders could see that large numbers of immature and unskilled worlcers in industry presented a problem to society. The founders visualized the school as a short-time trade school to provide enlightened training, enabling needy, young worlters to become self-supporting as quickly as possible. By 1906 the five-story brownstone building at 235 West 14th Street, which housed the experiment, was outgrown, and a loft building at 209 East 25rd Street was purchased by the directors to accommodate 500 girls. At this time the school was dependent on voluntary contributions, frequently from appreciative worlcers. It became difficult to continue to finance the school privately, and so in 1910 the school became a part of the public education system of the City of New York, with Miss Florence Marshall as the principal. and a register of 299 pupils. The present eleven-story building at 127 East 22nd Street opened in 1919 with an enrollment of 600. ln 1932 we acquired the Hebrew Technical Institute Building at 240 Second Avenue, to be used as an annex. ln 1938 the school became a four- year vocational high school, and Mrs. Mary Cassidy succeeded Miss Nlarshall as principal. Through the years of the schools transition from a privately supported institution to an impressive unit in the New York educational system, the ideals of the founders have been consistently maintained. Z Our .Ania eI' By DORIS MATTERA, Ianuary '49 You will always linger in my memory, In the secret chamber of my past. 1 will always remember dreamingly The essence of high school days unsurpassed. Your guidance was like a sheltering tree, Protecting its buds from threatening showers. Your work was not in vain, you see: The buds have blossomed into Howers. The time has come when we must bid adieu. The rain drops are our tears, a quiet sound. Your memory will inspire us in all we do Remembered in our hearts the year around. 21 jlze Wexf jing ecard By DORIS IVIATTERA, Ianuary '49 In the next titty years education wiII iniziuence worid peace, wiII help us strive for a hetter government, and aid us in working for further advancement in other ways. VVorId peace wiII reiy on the mentai status and inteiiigence of our chosen repre- sentatives who serve us in government positions. They must he ahie to analyze problems and promote the Ioest possihie soiutions. It is necessary for us to have worid peace, if there is to he a worId. We must Iearn to cooperate with one another. We must compromise on certain issues and he understanding. This can he made possible with the soiid foundation of education and the wiII to Iearn. Education aiso piays an important part in domestic affairs. Our government, aithough the hest in existence, has some faults to he considered. With educated citizens we can make our government more perfect. Vve must have weII informed Ieaders who heIieve in freedom for aII and wiII enforce our civiI rights. It is up to us to set an exampie for other countries to adopt. Therefore, we must he stronger, not so much in power of arms, hut in strength of government. Advancement depends upon education and interest. The scientist is interested in finding cures for diseases and Inanishing the causes, if possihie. Inventors through necessity wiII devise new machines to improve industry and make Iiving conditions more and more comfortahie. Through science and invention we now have the many conveniences which we have Iearned to take for granted. These incIude radio, teIevision, automohiies, modern homes, automatic cIothes and dish washers, refriger- ators, and many other aids to easier Iiving. With proper education, scientists and inventors wiii continue to make this a hetter and more comfortahIe worid for more peopie. In conciusion I'd IiIce to quote from our Iate president, Frankiin Delano Roosevelt, uVVe owe it to our posterity, we owe it to our heritage of freedom, we owe it to our God, to devote the rest of our Iives and aII of our capahilities to the huilding of a soiid, duraIoIe structure of worId peacef' GRADUATION QUALIVIS By RUTH FULDER, january '49 I mustn,t trip as I walk across: I'Iow I wish the speeches were over and throughI My stomach is turning and in chaosg I think I prefer some homework to do. Just imagine yourself in an ultra-modern city with all the latest inventions and gadgets. i've often thought of the future as being an era of make-believe. I can picture students hurrying to school every morning with the greatest enthu- siasm, and why not? All they have to do is hop into their private airplanes and talce off for school. There will probably be special landing fields on the rooftops of the buildings so they may parlc their planes. As they enter the school building there will be electric-eye doors which open and close automatically to prevent over- exertion from attempts to open those heavy doors. Of course, the students wouldn't think of walking up a liight of stairs when the escalators would be so much more convenient. School worlc can be so interesting, especially when there are so many substitutes for the textbooks. imagine watching television in the classroom for a lesson, watch- ing history as it occurs, or motion pictures to review past history! Do you remember how we complained about having to carry those heavy, clumsy books? Well, they will probably be replaced by microfilm which the students can carry in their poclcetsl Then there are the push buttons. When it gets too cold you push a button and the window closes, or if the sun bothers your eyes, you push another button and out slides the curtain. If you're ever caught with your arms full and you can't open the closet door, step on a button on the lioor and before you can say Open Sesame you can dispose of your bundles with no trouble at all. lt's fantasticl To think that in just fifty years there will be such a revolutionary changel When we think baclc to the good old days when -H it will probably be lilce a dream of the past, forgotten through the replacements of new and better inventions. OZJOOL By DOMNA VOUCAS, lune '49 Niki, get up, called my mother one hright morning. But l was too husy dream- ing to pay attention to her. l was dreaming of my high school and how it would loolc fifty years from now. Don,t say I won't live to see it because I'lI he only sixty-seven then. One day l'll talce my grandchildren hy the hand and show them just what l am about to predict. l predict that fifty years from now Mabel Dean Bacon's building will he white- washed, and it will sparlcle lilce a white calce of Swan Soap. The rooms will he enlarged and painted in beautiful colors soothing to the eyes. Ceilings will he twenty feet high. Walls will he all windows, crystal clear. The halls will he wide, their walls decorated with fine murals, executed hy the students. Streamlined escalators and large elevators will he waiting to talce the girls up or down. There will he one flight of stairs in the huilding to he used only in emergencies. An air- conditioning system will he in every room so that on the hottest days in the summer and the coldest days in the winter teachers and students will feel com- fortable. Youll find tasteful curtains on every window. There will he good lights in all the rooms for cloudy days. Each student will have a little cabinet or loclcer for herself so that she may hang her coat and lceep her hoolcs where they will he safe. Lunch periods in the school ofthe future will he relaxing and pleasant. Food will he appetizing and plentiful. and the dining room will he quiet, clean, and pretty. What is the most important part of a school? Why, the people in it, of course. This school will have hoys as well as girls and men as well as women teachers. The students will he more intelligent than we were. because we. who are their parents and grandparents, will have taught our children. who in turn will teach theirs. that education is a umustu in life and they should get everything out of it while they can. Teachers will also he a lot of fun: they will he friendly and under- standing. The students will he so intelligent that they won't ever he failed. Most important of all, there will he no racial discrimination among students or teachers. Geel to he ahle to go to school again in fifty yearsl Mabel Dean Bacon will always hold a warm place in our hearts, and fifty years from now it will still he playing an important part in the lives of future generations. 58 me mxf jing eam By GERDA GRUBE, Iune '49 The time is drawing nearer when we will graduate. Have you ever wondered what our school will loolc lilce, let's say fifty years from now? Let us pretend it's the year 1999, and we've come haclc to visit dear old Mahel Dean Bacon. lt's a hright sunny day, and as we turn the corner we see a startling sight. There before us is a huge glass huilding, three hy four hloclcs long and Fifty stories high, with an enormous entrance which slides open when you come within three feet of the electric eye. Ahove is a big, hright sign with the name Nlahel Dean Bacon Vocational High School flashing on it. Come, let us go in. No, don't use the escalator: it's too slow. Weill talce the jet propelled tuhe elevator. As we wallc clown the long halls. we notice glass lioors and walls. Let us go into this room. The class has just entered.,On the walls is a continuous row of huttons. As the girls push the huttons, we see chairs and some- thing that loolcs lilce a recording machine come out of the wall. Overhead is a loud spealcer from which the teacher conducts her class. There is no tallcing or jolcing. A television screen holds everyone's attention. A recording is made when each student recites, so the teacher may refer to any of her worlc. Motion pictures and television are used for many lessons. Where is our lunchroom? Why, there isn't any, because now all our meals con- sist ol pills which give us a well-balanced diet. On the top lioor of the school we find a large room equipped with an automatic soda fountain, a hand. and a floor ol smooth plastic. Here the girls enjoy themselves during free periods. Oh yes, there have been quite a few changes made. in the gym we find a glorious swimming pool, Hooded with sunlight. On the roof is a large parlcing field. All the girls have their own helicopters. There are never any late students in school now. Have you noticed the way the girls dress? Their clothes are different from ours, aren't they? What would you say to wearing plastic tights, vests, and plastic hoots in all those colors? The girls wear their hair much shorter than the new loolc prescribed. The reason for this is to permit them to slip on their liying helmets. Loolcl There goes a senior. You can tell them hy the neon lights on their senior hats. Yes the next fifty years are really going to he something to marvel at. What did you say? Oh. lim sorry, Mrs. Cassileth, I didn't hear the question. Yes, I guess l was day dreaming. What ahout? Oh just the changes that the next fifty years may hring to our school. 30 0 0 , .1411 ,xgmerccan Qrfzi Imam By MARION MARRONE, June '49 The American girl l am referring to was loorn of immigrant parents. She is the girl who not only has the problem of speaking a foreign language at home and trying to improve her own spoken English, hut also has to present her own ideas of life to her parents who cannot understand her language or her thoughts and dreams. She would like to he ahle to have her parents meet her friends, especially hoys, without her motherys saying, Hes a hoy. You shouldn't speak to him. She would like to have a gathering of friends in her home, to hold a ujam session or a party, without having her mother worry, There will he so many boys in the house. Vvhat will the neighbors say? These are just two of the problems an attractive and lively girl has to face if her parents are from the small towns of Europe, where, having led sheltered lives them- selves, they cannot allow themselves to give their daughters the freedom which other American girls seem to enjoy. What can an American girl of foreign parentage do to win her parents over to the American view of wholesome hoy-and-girl friendships? In the first place she should convince her mother of the desirability of her hoy friends: that is, she should make it clear to her parents that these boys are the type she would he proud to have as her own sons. If permission is granted once for a party to he held in the home, all the guests should act like well-mannerecl young ladies and gentlemen. The good behavior of the young people will convince the parents that the hoys and girls with whom her daughter wishes to associate are trustworthy and likable, They will certainly then he disposed to grant permission for future gatherings in the home. VGQEW 40 7 0I'l'l0l'l'0lfU If 20,94 By HELEN MASSENBACHER. june '49 VVhat can you expect from this younger generation? is what some people are saying. It is up to us to prove that we can raise our children so that this question will not apply to them. Some ways in which we can improve ourselves are: to become more intelligent, to eliminate prejudice within ourselves, and to practice democracy in our daily lives. As always, prejudice is still a major problem, and a threat to world security. We must help to reduce this problem. If each individual did his part in respecting people of other races and religions, it would help. Another means of helping is to raise our children without any trace of prejudice and to encourage them to play with children of other races and religions. It is very foolish to judge a race or religion by one had person. Getting to lcnow more people may help you overcome prejudice, as prejudice always springs from ignorance. Right now there are not too many countries in the world that are fortunate enough to enjoy a democracy like ours. We must appreciate this fact and try to help our country by malcing our democracy worlc. We should not talce advantage ol all the freedom that we have loy abusing it. We hope that our country will lceep up and improve its practices, and that other countries will establish democracies too. We hope that this will he accomplished for the good of 'future generations. We cannot overcome prejudice or talce a useful part in our government unless we are intelligent people. Every parent must act intelligently to raise the children of our next generation. It is our responsibility to educate our children properly, so that they in turn can become intelligent people and responsible citizens. It is everyone's duty to he a good citizen. We must he ahle to accept new ideas and methods. ln order to prevent a future war and malce this world a hetter place to live in, we must all strive to improve ourselves and feel directly responsible for events of future years. The present and future are ours.
