SENIORS zz ii Class History Hi! This is 1988. live, from the newsroom of life, and now. star reporter. Mother Time. Father’s wife Well, it’s good to see y’all here because I would like to take you on a journey through the newsroom of life, beginning with 1984 In the beginning, there was an invasion in the town of Wallingford- more specifically in Mark T. Sheehan High School. An invasion so unforgettable, so poignant in history, one that was filled with fear and anticipation among the invaders It was the INVASION OF THE FRESHMEN! These creatures entered Mark T. Sheehan High School one morning in September of 1984 filled with fear and anticipation- unknowing of what lay ahead in the next four years In World News, trouble had come again to the Soviet Union as Yuri Andropov died and Konstantin Chernenko took over. America’s Marines finally left Lebanon. Old barriers were broken when Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman chosen to be a Vice-Presidential candidate. She and running mate Democratic presidential candidate, Walter Mondale did not fare well against Republicans Ronald Reagan and George Bush. They won the election in a huge landslide victory. “Ghostbusters” was the year’s biggest moneymaker in the movie industry. Running not far behind was “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom , “Gremlins”, and Footloose”. Prince had the best-selling album. “Purple Rain” Bruce Springsteen had the second best-selling album, “Born in the U.S.A . Clara Peller introduced her poignant question. “Where’s the Beef?” as the new Wendy’s restaurants slogan. The Winter Olympics, in Sarajevo. Yugoslavia, went very well for the U.S. However, the Summer Olympics definitely had its ups and downs, with the Soviet boycott of the games in Los Angeles and the agony of defeat with Mary Decker tripping over Zola Budd during the Olympic 3,000 meter run. On a more positive note, though. 16 year old gymnast. Mary Lou Retton, took the Olympic Gold Medal in Women’s Gymnastics. The Detroit Tigers won the World Series and America’s favorite T.V. show, “M A S H”, finally ended. On the local scene The Mark T. Sheehan Marching Band and Flag Squad led the Electric Light Parade at Disney World, in Orlando, Florida. The Girl’s Field Hockey and Girl’s Basketball teams both went to the Class M State Tournament and the Boy’s Baseball Team was named State Runner up in the Class M State Championship. Our top political figures of the year were John Mackenzie, Class President; Jim Chordas, Vice President; Susan Morris, Secretary; and Lisa Cerreto, Treasurer. While our royalty for the Homecoming Game were Christopher Brewer, Prince and Jennifer Scala, Princess. And we were blessed with three Class Advisors: Mr. Richard Hill, Mr. John Perez, and Miss Jan Underwood What a year, eh? Well, what’s that over yonder? 19-85 Hmm- Let’s check it out! Well, our invaders uh, freshman are now sophomores, a bit wiser and more mature than we last saw them, as they are introduced to a new foe-one which they learn to strive for-THE DIFFERENTIATED DIPLOMA! But they prove their stamina and endurance when they take the “Most Spirit stick in the the Pep Rally! And our crowned royalty were Tracy Smith. Prince and Nicky Zandri, Princess. Our political figures this year were Phyllis DiGioia, President. Jim Chordas, Vice President; Susan Morris. Secretary; and Jennifer Dillon, Treasurer. On the sports scene basketball wonder Lisa DiGioia sets a new Girl’s Basketball scoring record with 1,091 career points. (No based opinion from this reporter, eh?) In world news, Live Aid became the theme of 1985. Bob Geldof organized this awesome display of the best of rock’s entertainers as a benefit for Africa’s starving and needy population. One highlight, of many, included the reunion of Led Zeppelin, one last time. “Miami Vice” was the hit TV cop show of the year, while Madonna Louise Ciccone dominated the music scene. The explosion of the Challenger 7 left the country mourning the death of the first teacher in space. Christa McAuliffe, as well as the deaths of her 6 crew mates. Samantha Smith, the schoolgirl who wrote a letter to Yuri Andropov questioning the reasons for war, was granted a tour of the USSR. In sports, Pete Rose surpassed Ty Cobb’s record with 4,191 hits and William “Refridgerator Perry led the Chicago Bears as they swept over the Patriots like a hurricane, to go on and win the Super Bowl. Another type of hurricane, however. Hurricane Gloria, swept through Connecticut leaving residents powerless for three days, then we got it back- Yeah, that’s the ticket!” As we approached 1986, we realized that, as a caterpillar retreats to its cocoon and emerges as a beauty of nature, a sophomore also goes through a changing process only to emerge as AN UPPERCLASSMAN! A new breed of achievers and proud individuals. In sports, the glorious New York Giants won the Super Bowl and the Mets won the World Series. In Music. Bruce Springsteen topped the charts once again with his 5-album live set and. on the movie scene. Top Gun” and Peggy Sue Got Married were the biggest movies of the year. Speaking of marriages, dashing homeboy Prince Andrew married “nature girl” Sarah “Fergie Ferguson. Maria Shriver (Kennedy) married Arnold “Conan” Scwartzenegger, and Tatum O’Neil married “the conan of tennis John McEnroe. In world news, the Iran-Contra hearings dominated the political world with “Ollie” Oliver North, the central figure in the scandal, who was just following orders” Hmmm On a heavier note, there was the Chernobyl reactor explosion which resulted in the evacuation of 135,000. A different kind of, or rather explosions-also occured as the country celebrated the 200-year anniversary of the Statue of Liberty with the largest display of fireworks ever to be held in this country. We also experienced some fireworks of our own right here at Sheehan High, when our football team became the Class SS State Champions and our Girl's Powder Puff team trounced Lyman Hall. The first “Pig Pile” in Sheehan history occured during the Pep Rally, and, thats right, we held the first Bonfire in Sheehan history! Our royalty this year were Joe Oertel, Prince and Nicky Zandri, Princess for the Homecoming We now join our “Upperclassmen 88” as they attend their Junior Prom at Stillwood Inn. which was spectacular! Joe Oertel and Diana Grabsch were our King and Queen for that evening and Marc Polanski and Nicky Zandri were our Prince and Princess. Ahh, yes-fond memories. Oh. my goodness! Look! On the horizon, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s 1987! Our upperclassmen are now Seniors-the highest form of life in high school. They are the CLASS OF ’88! Time for saving money, filling out college applications or deciding on a career, or for some, performing that dreaded task of writing the college application essay! “What do I write?” This year was filled with anxiety, sadness, happiness, and intrigue. Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev signed a missle treaty and vowed to work for greater reductions in arms production. Then came. Black Monday , the stock market fall-but. it eventually got back on its feet. Well, well, well-Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker had their own little scandal with PTL and Jessica Hahn. “Isn’t that special?” Dennis Connor retrieved the America’s Cup and the Twins won the World Series When a child fell down a 22 ft. deep well, in Midland. Texas, the whole country looked on with love and support for Baby Jessica McClure. The top movies of the year were the very poignant and the terrifying Fatal Attraction , and the story of love and dance, Dirty Dancing. Michael Jackson made his comeback and topped the charts with his album. Bad.” and U2 also came out in a fury with their album “Joshua Tree. The US celebrated the 200-year anniversary of the Constitution. Song and dance legend. Fred Astaire, died leaving behind his legacy of music. The “Safe Sex and Just Say No to Drugs” campaigns became the focus of 1987. The Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship and the Super Bowl winners were the Washington Redskins. The Winter Olympics, in Calgary, Canada, had its ups and downs for the U.S., but Brian Boitano and Debi Thomas brought home to the U.S. a gold and a bronze medal, respectively, in the Men’s and Women’s Ice Skating categories. These were only two of the six medals won by the U.S. On the Sheehan scene, our new Seniors were busy with their college applications and plans after high school, but they proved their spirit and pride once again as they won the Best Posters” and Most Canned Food” sticks in the Pep Rally. They walked on to Fitzgerald field at Lyman Hall High School In precision form with stern looks of determination on their faces. Afte five weeks of intense practices, the powder puff players were as ready as they would ever be. Each girl was filled with an incredible psyche that slowly diminish- ed with each minute that the referees were late. After more than an hour, the game finally began. Lyman Hall kicking off to Sheehan. The Trojans scored the first touchdown, but the Titans counteracted their score when Amy St. Hilaire ran 63 yards for a touchdown. Kristen Apuzzo added the extra point to give the Lady Titans a 7-6 lead going Into halftime. Unfortunately, the lead ended soon after halftime. Although the Titan girls played hard, the game finished with a disappointing score of 20-7. The team presented Me. Samaha and her assistant coaches: George Gilhouly. Al McKee. The excitement of months of planning, and the anticipa- tion of our upcoming senior year, added to the In- tensity of the evening. “Just Between You and Me” sung by April Wine was the theme for the night and the dance floor was filled to capacity. As the dancing progressed the guys’ tuxedos were replaced with more comfort- able attire such as Jams and sneakers. Joe Oertel and Diana Grabsch were crowned king and queen and Marc Polanski and Nicky Zandri were chosen as our prince and princess. For most, the experience was a true representation of the spirit of which the class of 1988 possesses. We all eagerly await our senior prom with great anticipa- tion. Sheehan started the season slow with a 5-7 record after their first twelve games. The Titans were playing good basketball in those games, but just weren’t able to put a team away and lost them in the final minutes. After the boys lost to East Haven they went on a tear winning their next 7 games in a row. The highlights of that winning streak was beating first place team Shelton, third place Branford, and crosstown rival Lyman Hall. The Titans finished their regular season with a 12-8 record and that brought them to the Housy tournament. In the first game of the tournament Sheehan faced number 1 Shelton. The Titans upset the Gaels with a 63-61 victory. That win took them to the finals where they lost a heartbreaking game to Branford by a score of 62-73. The Titans also qualified for the state tournament, but they lost in the opening round to E.O. Smith. The Titans were led by a strong group of seniors in Capt. Jack Koons, Capt. Class records were shat- tered by Rodney Haynes, Tim Griffin, and Roland Pearson. Tom Twohill broke the Longstanding school record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.9 seconds. Next years team will have a strong nucleus since we are only losing 6 seniors. They will be led by Rodney Haynes, Tim Griffin, Mike Shook, Jon Ward, and Stu Brown among others. H. Tulpar. Our foursome of Karl Swenson. Dan Craig, Bob Clarke and Steve Inglese im- proved match by match by going up against league powers Amity, Shelton and Cheshire along with eventual divi- sion I champ Southington. This im- provement showed up against the less experienced teams. The highlight of the year came with back to back wins over crosstown rival Lyman Hall. With their goal once again being to make the division 11 state tournament the ’88 Titans should have a banner season. The nucleus of the team will be returning with a year’s experience, losing only our 1 player Karl Swen- son. But with the return of Jim McMa- hon after a year layoff. A major downfall in the season was losing to Lyman Hall 8-7 in extra innings on our home field. Looking ahead to the 1988 season, the team should have a very good chance of qualifying for the state tournament.
