' M.T. Sheehan High School Wallingford Connecticut The first day of a typical freshman is very typical. While walking down the hall to your first class, carrying books for all classes, a loud bell sounds. You think to yourself “this can’t be a fire drill, it’s only the first day.” Then the thought enters your mind “I’m late!” Running down the hall as quickly as possible, you suddenly see the door shut. The scared freshman knocks softly on the door. The teacher slowly opens the door and you hear the other students laughing loudly. Can the rest of the year be this bad? I'. I —. — _ 3 HUH! the same trials and tribulations occur. Being an “all-knowing” sophomore you think you can walk the halls with an air of dignity. As you look up the staircase you see a group of senior studs. They walk forward as a brick wall, you dodge right, then left, you try up the middle- but it’s no use. Tons of notebook paper scatter aimlessly everywhere. As you stand at the top of the stairs you realize you are still an under- classmen. Well, you finally made it- you are an upperclassmen. You know what this means. YOU CAN GET YOUR LICENSE From here on in no more sitting home on the week- ends, you get to cruise the strip. From McDonalds to the arcade on a Saturday night it is packed with kids. You can go to Burger King and refill your soda 3 times before dashing out the door to get to McDonalds and order a hamburger. Then off to a social gathering at a friends house. But. as juniors, you may be required to have the car home by 12:00 p m There are certain priviiages that come with being a senior. Among them include being able to cut in the lunch line with out a hassel. Then once receiving your lunch you can wine and dine at the comfort of the “Senior Table”. In the fall senior girls look forward to playing on the powder puff girls football team, While senior boys act as cheerleaders. Then in the spring everyone looks forward to graduation. 8 9 Once you have spent four years in school you know who your friends are. Friends are the ones who cry with you during the rough times and laugh with you during the bright times. A friend is someone who understands you and accepts you for who you are. When you need someone to talk to you can always pick up the phone and a friend will answer. On a Saturday night when it’s getting late you can call a friend and they will be glad to go out with you. A friend represents trust. Whenever you find out a secret” the first person you tell is a friend. Friends are a necessity, for with- out them life would be a lonesome journey. When you really need someone to help you out you can count on your friends. The worst part of leaving school is saying good-bye to your friends, but if they are your true friends you won’t have to say good-bye. 10 Mark Addy “Little Addy Thanks Mom and Dad for encourag- ing me to keep going It’s not the kill it's the thrill of the chase. -Deep Pur pie. These people guide us through almost every learning aspect of our lives. They propose the knowledge of life to us, and let us make our own decisions on what to do with it. These guiding hands make up the Mark T. Sheehan High School Faculty and Staff. Many thanks to them, from the wisdom of the future. U L T Y 1987 YEARBOOK MESSAGE “Your high school days are golden” (words taken from the Mark T. Sheehan High School song), certainly should describe the years you have spent at Sheehan. We truly hope that you have not only enjoyed your days but have also been prepared for life’s challenges whenever they may be. You have worked hard, perserved, experienced the roller coaster of success and failure, and now you move ahead to contribute your talents and services to the improvement of life for yourselves, your families and your communities wherever that may be. We wish you well. We received 180 pints of blood. The most pints ever received was 240 pints in 1980. The reason for the decrease is that the school population is dropping creating a drop in the number of donors. Approximately 150 students and about 16 teachers gave blood this year. The reason the blood drive is so successful is that the kids really care. Our school has received awards for the best student percentage of blood donors. There are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to give blood. A person must weigh 110 pounds, they must be seventeen years old. and be in good health. Parental permission is not needed. The procedure to donate blood is not very complicated. It includes filling out a health history form, taking of temperature, pulse, and blood pressure; asking of personal questions; and a sample of blood from the ear. The actual donation period is five to ten minutes, though the entire process takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. After the blood drive, the blood is transported to Farmington and then to hospitals all over the state. Mr Mannion started the annual blood drive at Sheehan in 1978. He started it on his own because he thought it would be a way of showing his thanks for being alive today When fighting in the Vietnam War. Mr. Mannion was injured and had to receive blood. Give blood you feel real good. It gives you a special feeling inside. The day before, the girls on the team had the teachers wear their game shirts and bring in a lunch for them. Coach Judy Samaha said. “This was a way of getting everyone involved in the excitement Wednesday. November 26. the day had finally arrived. Who would win? The rain was really coming down, but our spirits were climbing higher For the last 10 years. Lyman Hall had been the victors, but the Sheehan ‘86 Powder Puff Team wasn't going down without a fight. As the girls walked down to the field the rain didn’t change the determined looks on their faces. The game began. The referrees were very fair. There was still no score after the second 10 minute quarter, but the girls still wouldn’t give up. Kim Richardson was on the one yard line when her flag was ripped off her. Beth Thorpe was on her way to a touchdown when she was tackled, there was no penalty called. Finally, Heather Fritz got the ball and ran for the winning touchdown There were a few minutes left to the game. When the ref blew his whistle it was official - Sheehan wins. 6 0. The team ran out on the field laughing and crying. Coach Samaha had only one thing to say: “The Pride Is Back After the game. Sheehan and Lyman Hall met in the Titans’ cafe for snacks. There were no hard feelings, everyone was getting along great. Coach Judy Samaha Matted the first Powder Puff game in Connecticut in 1977 because it was a new activity for Homecoming. In 1978-79 she quit because of board policy. She decided to come back after 10 years of hearing everyone complain about losing. She also didn’t want it to die because of no coaches. Coach Samaha had alot of help teaching the girls She had offensive trainers. Dave Smith and Lori Fuller, and defensive trainers. George Gilhouly and Lindy Jones. Coach Samaha had this to say about the game. “There was no doubt we were better. The practices were harder than the game. There was new blood on the team that v. ’i!y motivated. It was hard to tell about Lyman Hall because we were quicker vut the rain helped them. “The seniors made it fun for me. Samaha said, it’s good to win. but you have to have fun That’s what it is all about.” The big question now is • Will the Pride Remain in ’87? We’re the ’86 Powder Puff Team, Lookin’ fine and feelin’ mean, The best team you’re gonna see. As we bring home the victory. WE’RE ONE MASSIVE TITAN MACHINE! The girls were accompanied by Jeff DelGaudio on the synthesizer. Beth Thorpe Powder Puff Cheerleaders 91 tf Keith Shook For the first time in the 15 year history of the Carini Bowl the Thanksgiving Day showdown of Wallingford rivals went into overtime before Lyman Hall defeated The Titans for their sixth turkey day win in a row. Ed Charbonneau went 5 yards on a counter draw off right tackle to send Sheehan to its second defeat in as many overtime games. The west side gridders lost to Amity 21 14 in the first overtime contest in 1984. Under the Kansas tie-break system employed in the Housatonic League each team gets the ball at the 10 yard line with four plays to score. The Titans lost the coin flip and went first. John Santiago carried twice off the left side to bring the ball to the Lyman Hall 3. Santiago lost a yard on a third down attempt, before Brian Salisbury’s fourth down pass intended for John MacKenzie in the front right corner of the end zone was batted down. On Lyman Hall's first play Charbonneau gained 5 yards off left guard before being stopped by John Swantek. Keith Shook, and Scott Lynch. The Trojans then faked left, but countered with Charbonneau who raced into the end zone for the winning score. The Titans opened the game in a shotgun formation and marched down the field with Salisbury and Santiago alternating at the deep back slot. The drive stalled inches short of the goal line when the Trojan recovered the first of 3 Sheehan fumbles. Santiago was named the top Sheehan offensive player with 49 yards rushing reception for 8 yards Salisbury had 39 yards on the ground, while Stacy Hanna chipped in with 31 yards on seven carries. Senior Keith Shook had 16 tackles to take home the trophy as the Titans top defensive player. Lynch had 15 hits to wrap up an outstand ing defensive career, while classmate Scott Torre added a dozen from his secondary position. Chris Melillo had 11 tackles in his final game, while junior end, John MacKenzie, finished with 10 stops. 92 Cheerleaders Donal O’Connor John Swantek The Crowd Robby Houston Class of ’88 Jayna Morgan.
