We were all nervous and scared! We were introduced to our advisors: Miss Gurrieri, Mr. Ardas, and Mr. Morawski. We held our first class elections with Nancy MacKenzie as President, Todd Powers as Vice President, Christopher Meade as Treasurer, and Dave True as Secretary. November was approaching quickly, and with it came a lot of excitement! We were all busy making posters, and we began to show that we had spirit as Jim Ricci began the tradition of Super Titan. The end of January brought our first mid-year exams, what a trying time, but we lived through it! We then took part in the ninth grade statewide Proficiency Testing given in March. Spring was quickly approaching and with it followed the class elections for our sophomore year. Joe Chordas was elected to head of our class as President with the assistance of John Ricci as Vice President, Lori Stave as Treasurer, and Kim Izzo as Secretary. Finals signaled that summer was around the corner Finally the last day of school, and on our way to being sophomores. In September of 1983 we entered the halls once again, but this time as more mature and experienced students. During this time, newly elected President Reagan and Pope John Paul II had assasination attempts made on their lives; luckily they both survived. Another tragedy hit when the Marine Barracks in Lebanon was bombed, 297 in all, were killed. But their were bright sides of the year also. Like Michael Jackson making millons on his album Thriller, and we had our first woman in space, Sally Ride. Wayne Gretsky of Ice Hockey’s Oilers breaking all of the scoring records, as the Los Angeles Redskins took the Superbowl. And of course Sheehan had some history also, like Annette Sabatucci and Jim Rici heading our class with some royalty. And it was a big surprise to the Seniors when we proved that we had the most spirit by winning the spirit stick at the Pep Rally with a lot of help from our new Super Titan, Joe Chordas. Elections came again with Bill Stevens taking over the Presidency while Joe Chordas stepped down to the vice-presidency, with Donna Moslow as Treasurer, and Kim Izzo as our re-elected Secretary. Finals came and went, and we were finally Upper Classmen! It is our Junior Year now, and everything is a lot clearer to us. We realize college is approaching and we must improve our grades. But it wasn’t all work — we sure did play! This year’s look in clothing was the Madonna look for the ladies, and the Prince look for the guys - these two stars really made a grand entrance in music, while Ghostbusters and Gremlins made it big in the box office. Prince may have had the best selling album, but Bruce Springsteen is still the Boss to us, coming in second with Born in the USA. The winter Olympics went well, except for the Soviet led boycott of the L.A. games. Excitement built in Sheehan’s Junior Hall as our Junior Prom on June 1, at Colonial Hall, approached. Our prom theme was “We’ve Got Tonight.” Sheri Rossicone and Christopher Meade were chosen King and Queen of the prom. Finals came and went Finally Seniors! Finally our Senior Year! The year we all awaited eagerly. Just as we began to get used to being back to school Mother Nature blessed us with another vacation- Hurricane Gloria. Once we recovered from our worst hurricane ever, we began to realize that our time was coming to an end as we began to fill out college applications. Powder Puff ’86 was the chant heard in the late fall up until the day we played. The Pep Rally was filled with excitement with Lori Stave and Paul Scala as Queen and King of the Royal Court, and the Seniors took two spirit sticks: Best Posters and most canned food. We had Sheehans first “Pig Pile” in the middle of the Pep Rally - it was CRAZY!!! That night we also celebrated the first Bonfire in the history of Mark T. Sheehan. All of our fall teams made it to the State Tournament, and our Football Team took the Class SS State Championship. This was the year of Super-Bowl super-hype, like the champions, the Chicago Bears and their “Refrigerator,” William Perry. Bob Geldof made news with his organization of Live Aid for Africa. There also was tragedy with the Explosion of the Challenger 7 and the death of the first teacher in space Sharon Christa McAuliffe, and her six crew mates. May 24th brings our Senior Prom at Aqua Turf, and our Senior Outing, May 27, at Holiday Hill. And now we eagerly await Friday night, June 20, a night that will be filled with memories of the past four years and plans for our future. Flashbacks of friends and good times will be in everyone’s mind and we will never forget the feeling of being all together for the last time. 48 % While the Days Are Going By There are lonely hearts to cherish While the days are going by; There are weary souls who perish. While the days are going by; If a smile we can renew, As our journey we pursue, Oh, the good that we may do, While the days are going by. There’s no time for idle scorning, While the days are going by; Let your face be like the morning, While the days are going by; Oh, the world is full of sighs. Full of sad and weeping eyes; Help your fallen brothers rise, While the days are going by. All the loving links that bind us While the days are going by; One by one we leave behind us. While the days are going by; But the seeds of good we sow, Both in shade and shine will grow. And will keep our hearts aglow, While the days are going by. — George Cooper JUNIORS CLASS OF 1987 President, Greg Carbone Treasurer, Jayna Morgan Advisors. Miss McGovern. Our paths have crossed and we have met and shared each other’s dreams, and come to the realization: life is more than what it seems. As 1 go I seem to leave part of myself behind, maybe a smile, a look, a laugh, or something of that kind. Now our paths part, we turn away, will we ever meet again? If not I’ll hold the memory of all of you, my friends. Things seem so final when one has to say goodbye, so I’ll just say, “Till we meet again” and try hard not to cry. A poem by L. TITAN POWER! OOH! AAH! ’echoing through out the hallways at SHEEHAN HIGH SCHOOL, all week long. Monday was Hawiian day, and although it was cold and rainy, a strong Hawiian breeze couid be felt. Tuesday was Nerd day, “I know you are, but what am I, FRANCIS?” Pee-Wee Herman. EAT YOUR HEART OUT! Wednesday was the start of the games, and the fun. We got out of classes and headed down to the gym. which was deco- rated with giant banners. After the pep rally, we formed a Motorcade to Lyman Hall for the powderpuff game, which we lost, 28-0. Afterwards we went to the Student Council bonfire. Spirit Week would have been picture perfect, had it not rained Thanksgiving day, forcing “The Game” to be played on Satur- day. 7 The Game 88 we lost 44-0 This Year the 14th annual Carini Bowl was played on the newly dedicated John J. Riccatelli field, at Sheehan Highschool, “The Game” which is usually played on Thanksgiving day, was rained out, postponing it until Saturday. It all started out alright for the Titans, until the Trojans took the lead. From then on, the still raining skies took advantage of the Titans and rained on their parade. The Trojans in other words dampened the Titan spirit, and things went downhill for the rest of the day. The Titans, however, didn’t let this game, however important to them, bother them, for they went on to win the State Tournament class SS Championship, topping Montville by a 21-7 score, making three touchdowns in less than six minutes. The leadership that the 12 seniors displayed all season will be deeply missed. Seniors are: Mike Mihalek, Mark Griffin, Bryan Gilliam, Marion Hannah, Bryan Cannata, Rick Allen, Dave Doukas, Jeff Summerfield, and Scott Casciano, Dave Silvia and Larry Harris, Juniors, Brian Salisbury, Scott Lynch, Chris Mellillo, John Santiago, Keith Shook, Greg Carbone, Scott Torre, Joe Mirra and the rest will look forward to another successful season so that everyone will know of the MIGHTY TITANS OF SHEE- HAN!!! 89 90 NEW FRIENDS AND OLD FRIENDS Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold. Football The main goal for the Sheehan football team was to win, hopefully, six games Well, they certainly attained this goal with an awesome record of 10 wins against 2 losses. One of their finest games was played against Monteville for the Class SS State Championship. Winning the game in the last six minutes, the Titans scored three touchdowns to win the Class SS Title 21-7. Captains Marion Hanna and Scott Casciano led the team show- ing good playing habits, excellent football skills, and good sportsman ship. These seniors will be sorely missed by all, but the future looks bright with Bryan Salisbury as quarterback. Such success can only be achieved when a team plays well together and hustles. Next year the Titans will have a tough act to follow considering this was the first time in the football history of Sheehan that they have broken a .500 record let alone won the Class SS State Championship. The girls, content with this record, had a very good year. Good defense, a main factor and asset to a winning season, was achieved with the help of Danielle Pulit and Maureen Hogan. Michele Michaud was an outstanding sweep- er who received the commendable awards of All State 2nd team and All Housatonic 1st team. Also attaining the All Housatonic 2nd team were Heather Fritz and Michelle Melillo. These juniors were the leading scorers for the Sheehan squad and look to further their achievements next year. Sheri Rossicone, playing for four years, had an excellent season and helped to achieve Sheehan’s success with 10 shut-outs as their goalie. Many girls who help make the future look bright are Suzanne Grillo, Pam Scott, Colleen Totz, and Stephanie Zamborie. The girls finished their season with a well-achieved and well-deserved 15 wins against 3 losses. The starting six included Lisa Di- Gioia, Sandy Battles, Kim Richard- son, Lori Stave, Linda Mazzucco, and Jennifer Lewis. Stave and Maz- zucco were the main setters while DiGioia and Battles were the strong spiking duo. Jennifer Lewis had a very consistent serve which helped to carry the Titan six to many wins. Lisa DiGioia’s strong and accurate spiking ability kept the girls on their toes and sparked the excitement into the games. She received a commendable award of being picked for All-State 1st Team. With DiGioia and Battles up for the blocks, the defensive game was a highlight for the match. Kim Richardson and Battles kept the net alive with more spikes and blocks. The girls’ continued their victories to the quarter finals of the State Tournament, Class M. Although this was the last game for the Titan squad, they have much that will always be respected and envied. For the upcoming year, the Titans are losing five of their six starters. Shooting guard Mike Mihalek and swingman Jeff Cohen led the scoring attack. Rick Brown, the lead- ing rebounder, joined Dave Doukas, John MacKenzie, John Starrs, Pat Arnold, and John Hudick under the boards. The offense was controlled by a trio of point guards: Gary Cronin, Todd Powers, and Marion Hanna. The girls really pulled it all togeth- er this year. Hustle and defense were their forte, while their offense looked to Lisa DiGoia, co-captain, for an average of 24 points per game. Mi- chele Bates, co-captain, was an im- portant asset to the team with her outside shot and never-ending hustle. Heather Fritz and Lori Stave were the point guards, and with Lori Stave out with a knee injury, Fritz, an excellent ball handler, was able to handle, the pressure and was extremely active on defense. Lisa DiGioia, the 5’11” forward, was able to carry the girls through many games with her consistant outside shots and outstanding offen- sive and defensive rebounding. Upon reaching the 1,000 point mark, she then broke the school record of 1061 career points. Next year, losing Lisa DiGioia. Michele Bates, and Lori Stave, the girls have to fill the gaps. Needing to win their last three contests for a state tournament birth, the team beat Branford, Seymour, and clinched a spot with a win over Derby. Ranked twenty-first (out of twenty-two teams) in Class M, the Titans made it to the quarterfinals. After defeating Lewis Mills, they shocked number one ranked Notre Dame, only to lose one game later to a powerful New London squad. All Housatonic League senior Pete DiGioia, second team pick Jim Fuda, and honorable mention candidates Mike Fritz and Mark Benci- vengo were responsible for much of the success. The starting line-up was complete with catcher Mike Mihalek, shortstop Mike Sgambati, third baseman Tom Dorio, and outfielders John Starrs and Dennis Mills. Losing five starters, the team will look for letter winners Dave Doukas, Lou DePonte, and Brian Gilliam to fill key roles in another quest for a state tournament bid in 1986. Headlining the list of returnees is third baseman Michele Bates. Joining Bates were second base- man Linda Mazzucco and strong armed shortstop Heather Fritz. The first base duties were shared by Mi- chele Melillo and Lisa Johnson. The battery of catcher Kris Dyer and pitcher Stacey Dorrico worked the opposing hitters. The outfield was controlled by a trio of sophomores. Power hitter Beth Thorpe patrolled left while Jenny Birdsey was in center and Mary Caulfield in right. Throughout the course of the season, the team showed a tremen- dous improvement. The upset victory over Seymour showed the progress of the girls. Now that the team has played together for an entire season, expectations are high for 1986. Coach Charles Farley must be looking forward to the return of a strong junior class which accumulat- ed 415.75 out of the team’s 756.75 total. Tom Degnan set a school record and junior class record in the 5000 with a time of 16:12.8. Crossing the finish line in 15.7 seconds, junior Rick Brown set a junior class record in the high hurdles. Freshman stan- dout Rodney Hayes flew to a class record in the high jump with a mark of five feet nine inches. Seniors Mark Hornyak and Harvey Stanley had an outstanding season. Hornyak finished third on the team in scoring while Stanley finished second in the state’s meet’s competition. The relay team of Mark Griffin, Jim Ricci, Larry Burgess, and Don Merritt also earned a state birth legging out the 4x440. Losing a mere three seconds, the track team sets its goal at the Housatonic League Championship in 1986. Finishing 12th out of the 25 teams in the Class M championship gives Coach Charles Farley a reason to set high hopes for 1986. Junior Michele Michaud, who placed third in the discus during the state meet, accumulated 130 points to top the team. Seniors Kim Brown and Lynn Boutillier were third and fourth with 82.25 and 71 points, re- spectively. Finishing the top five were surprise freshmen Amy Retzer and jumper Kathy Linaberry. School records and Housatonic League Championships were ac- quired in the shot put and 4x440 relay. Kim Brown put her name in the record books, while lofting the shot put 37’4.24” and acquiring a Housatonic gold. Likewise, the relay team of Kim Brown, Cathy Supranovich, Nancy Nigro, and Lynn Boutilier acquired both honors with a time of 4:19. Underclassmen Cathy Supranovich, Rhonda Fogelstrom, Amy St. Hilaire, and Sheri Crew will be looked upon for a major contribution throughout the spring campaign. First seed Dave Teidemann stroked his way to an All-Housatonic selection. Second ranked Steve Zawadski, who proved his consisten- cy throughout the season, teamed with third spotted Jack Larese and Howard Mason and forth seeds Scott Michonski, Fred Franzoni, and Jim McMahon to complete the varsity line-up. The climax for Coach Ralph Schlottman came with a victory over Xavier, the first time that the Middle- town school was defeated in the history of Sheehan. Ranked twenty- first, the squad missed a spot in the twenty team state tournament field by a slim margin. Jayvee players Karl Swenson, Sean Murphy, Matt Syak, and Rlc Morse will be looked upon to “put the ball in the cup” throughout 1986. Coach Delores Cafferey was very pleased with the improvement in the efforts and abilities of the girls. The starting six were all juniors led by the superb performance of Tricia Coyle. Coyle, nominated on the sec- ond team of the Housatonic League, had an excellent season as the num- ber 1 seed. Sue Fazzino, holding po- sition 2, also kept the Titans alive with her hustle. Lori Stave, in posi- tion 3, improved her individual abili- ties followed by Sharri Driscoll, Sheri Rossicone, and newcomer Renee St.Hilaire, seeded number 6. The Titan duo of Tricia Coyle and Sue Fazzino were very impressive while Lori Stave and Sheri Rossicone kept the aces alive as the number 2 seed in doubles. Sharri Driscoll and Renee St.Hilaire hustled their way to the 3rd seed of the tennis duet. Dawna Young, a freshman on the team, showed outstanding abili- ties and has a very promising future in Titan tennis. Beth Boudreau improved her skills and hopes to shine in the spring of ’86. The future looks very bright for the girls this season. Goals are set high in hopes that their experience will prevail for a successful season. Men- tor Richard Tucker, who guided his team to a 7-9 record, is looking for- ward to the return of several mature players. Stu Schouten played out of the number one seed. Ron Heidgard be- came the first person in Sheehan’s history to qualify for a post season state tournament. Bill Stevens aced his third ranked opponents while Chris McKay vollied his way to num- ber four. Craig Odermatt was rated fifth, and sixth place honors were shared by Tray Body and Scott Casciano. Two seniors were handed their diplomas in 1985. This leaves a veteran roster and incentive for Pat Spica and Brian Ludovico to stroke their way into the top six seeds in 1986.
