Advisor Ms. Roliloff Asst. Advisor SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Pat Morrissey Secretary Deanna DiPasquale Treasurer Andy Reynolds Vice President Dan Page President THE CAPTAINS LOG FRESHMEN YEAR - 1981 Zhis year's graduating seniors climbed aboard the good ship, Mark Z. Sheehan High School, in September 198 J. Zhe nation had just gone through a period of ups and downs. Sight months earlier, in January. Ronald Reagan had been inaugurat- ed into his first term as President, and on the same day the country celebrated the return of 52 Americans held hostage in Jran for nearly 2 years. Zhen came the assassination attempts on the President, and Pope ffohn Paul JJ; luckily, both survived. Not so lucky was Anwar Sadat, president of Egypt, who died in a shower of gunfire. Zhere were also calm waters in 1981. England celebrated the marriage of Prince Charles to Cady Diana, while we were thrilled by the Raiders of the Lost Ark, the year's top movie. Zhe California Med-fly posed a serious problem, but it wasn't as hard a problem to solve as Rubik's Cube, the new puzzle craze. Zhe Space Shuttle blasted into orbit for the first time while the Rolling Stones’ world tour rocked us all with the sounds of their hit album. Start Me U p. flogging ran away as the fad of the year as America worked on getting itself in shape. Kef ore we knew it, the year was coming to an end, but not before Sandra Day O'Connor was chosen to be the first female flustice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Zhe discovery of pitching wonder. Jernando Valenzuela, of the C.A- Dodgers, made certain that 1981 was a special year. Zhe winds filled our sails and pushed us on toward 1982. SOPHOMORE YEAR - 1982 Zhe Sophomore year was one where childish ways seemed to have been left behind at the last port. We were confronted by our Marines going into Beirut, Cebanon and an increase in military and economic aid to civil-war- stricken SI Salvador. Zhe Soviet Union’s leader JCeonid Hrezhnev passed away, leaving former KQH director uri Andropov in charge, while Zylenol poisoning caused seven deaths and one big headache in the U.S. E.T. and Poltergeist were the hit movies of the year with Tootsie and Rocky III also packing a punch. Wayne Gretzky of Jce Hockey's Sdmonton Oilers broke all the scoring records as Care Hears and Atari computers, and indeed computers of all types, turned into a multi-million dollar enterprise. (ferry Conney and Carry Holmes fought it out for the heavyweight championship of the world. A Vietnam Memorial was finally dedicated in Washington D.C. John DeCorean, famous carmaker, was arrested while making a huge cocaine deal. Zhe year ended and we sailed into 1983. JUNIOR YEAR - 1983 Jt is the f unior year and we can all understand things a little better, for we are now experienced sailors. We have much more to understand now also, such as the Soviet shootdown of a commercial airplane KAC007, with the loss of many lives, and the American invasion of Grenada. Zhe Soviet walkout from the Hue tear Arms talks brought world anxiety to a peak as fears spread of thermonuclear destruction. Zhe new board game, Zrivial Pursuit, tested our knowledge and you either wanted to buy a Cabbage Patch Kid or throw it into a blender. We were moonwalking to Michael fjacskson's mega hit album Thriller or just grooving to the PolicCs Synchronicity and Davie Howie’s Let’s Dance. Flashdance was the surprise hit movie of the year, joining the third movie in Star Wads trilogy, The Return of the Jedi, the year's biggest moneymaker. Courage was shown more than ever in 1983 by both Harney Clarke, the first person to have a plastic heart implant, and Vanessa Williams, the first woman ever forced to give up the title. Miss America. Zhc courage of America’s Marines was also very evident, but the glory of it was dulled by the return of their coffins from Lebanon to the U.S. SENIOR YEAR - 1984 Much wiser and more weatherworn then when wc started four years ago, we began our Senior year. Zrouble had come again to the Soviet Union as furi Andropav died and Konstantin Chernenko took over. America’s Alarms finally left Lebanon. Old barriers were broken when (Jeraldine Serraro was chosen to be the first female Vice-Presidential candidate. She and running- mate, Democratic presidential candidate, Walter Mondale did not fare well against Kepublicans, Konald Keagan and (Jeorge Hush. Zhey won the election in a huge landslide taking every state but Minnesota and the District of Columbia. Ghostbusters was the year's biggest moneymaker in the movie industry. Kunning not far behind was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, and Footloose. Prince had the best selling album, Purple Rain. Hruce Springsteen came in second with Born in the U.S.A. Zhe Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, fugoslavia and the Summer Olympics in Cos Angeles went well except for the Soviet led boycott of the jC A- games. Zhe Detroit Zigers won the World Series and America’s favorite Z.V. show M A S H. finally ended. Zhe tides pulled us into 1985 and graduation. As the Hawiian Maniacs took over the school for a day with wild clothes, sunglasses and just a touch of suntan lotion, the electricity level began its upward climb, to reach a crescendo two days later at the Pep Rally. Tuesday, it was Revenge of the Nerds - and what a revenge it was. The nerds virtually controlled the school, with their full complement of polyester slacks and horned-rimmed glasses. As they stuttered and wimped their way through, the posters for the Pep Rally became finished, and the electricity grew-We were approaching overload. 76 77 Spirit Week While the Powder Puff squad honed its skills to a razor’s edge the cheerleading gang only managed to get about as sharp as a rolling pin. Coaches Neubauer. Schlottman and Fusco worked with the girls on the basics of advanced flag football. Even though we were heavily outweighed by a skilled Lyman Hall team, our quickness allowed us to pull out a 12-12 tie in a barnburner of a game. The cheerleader’s organizational skill kept the crowd on its toes, and its spirit running high. As the final seconds ticked away, a slightly melancholy mood descended upon some of the players, for this game signified the beginning of the end of their senior year. Though when the bubbly was uncorked, We all got together and started looking forward to the next day's Homecoming game. Spirit Week Finally, after virtually months of preparation for the football play- ers and coaches, the moment of truth had arrived. All during summer practice, throughout the season, and during all the previous games, this one Game was ever a looming shadow on the horizon. Literally thousands of spectators turned out the the Thanksgiving Day festivi- ties. The air was practically crackling with nervous electricity as the crowd's apprehension grew. The players took the field, began their warm-ups, and the spectators went wild. Unfortunately, not much went right for the Titan squad that day. After a long day in the trenches, battling it out with a surprisingly tough Trojan team, the scoreboard read 41-19 in favor of the Trojans. All of the Sheehan players may walk away with their heads held high, for the dedication that it took to play that game which will be envied by all as su- preme. 80 81 The Giants WON! The quota of 200 pints was met and even surpassed by II. Mr. Mannion, the organizer and general head of the bloodmobile at Sheehan was very pleased with the response of the students as well as faculty in support of this most worthy cause. The first donors arrived and began the process at around 8:00 a.m. on a sunny mid-May morning of 1984. From that moment until about 2:00 in the afternoon, the student and Red Cross volunteers worked at a fever pitch to keep up with the growing waiting line. Tables had to be taken from the cafeteria, and some students were forced to eat while standing up, al- though not one complained-they were doing their share. For those who are unable to donate blood, Mr. Mannion is willing to put anyone to work who has a desire to help support the effort. I try to take people who don’t get involved in many other activities and put them to work here. Afterwards, I may see them in the hallway, and they really look proud that they had helped ...” According to Mr. Mannion, If you’ve ever just looked in the door down there, you’d know that it’s just magical ...” We agree Mr. Mannion! Keep the magic alive! 88 A Friend . You just call out my name and you know wherever I am. I'll come running, just to see you again. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, All you’ve got to do is call.
