From Freshman To Senior — Two Looks At Spirit Week An excitement spread throughout the school. The newness of high school in September had died for Sandy (a freshman), but the spirit generated this week was incredible. Maybe everyone was happy because of the small vacation for Thanksgiving, but the events planned throughout the week must have had some- thing to do with the energy. It was Wednesday and the periods were shortened for the half day. In Earth Science, Sandy stared into space, waiting for the pep rally, remembering the beginning of this Spirit Week. Voting for Homecoming Freshmen Prince and Princess and Hat Day were on Monday. She voted for Gary Cronin and Kathy McGowan; they both won. An assembly followed on Tuesday that was unforgettable. A movie was shown first about a comedian’s youth, which was pretty good. After the film, the Student Council introduced the First Annual Leg Show. First, about ten guys came out in gym shorts and other various costumes (?) and the audience voted with their applause. The girls came out in the same way and lined up for the voting. Some football players in the first row kept yelling for No. l’s legs. Two juniors were the clear winners: No. 1 for the girls and the guy with the cheap sunglasses. As Sandy thinks about it, she smiles. An announcement inter- rupts her thoughts. “Students from the first floor A-wing are dismissed for the pep rally.” Her thoughts drift to the Turkey Game tomorrow and the Homecoming Dance. She has four more years left of high school and maybe next year she will win the Second Annual Leg Show. From Freshman To Senior — Two Looks At Spirit Week I walked into the gym as it was busily being prepared for the pep rally. Donned in my maroon and gold Powder Puff shirt, I joined the group with the same outfit. As we stood in front of the senior stands, it was obvious that we were getting excited about the game. Cans for the Canned Food Drive were being collected in front of each of the classes’ bleachers. And the seniors were clearly in the lead. Each new can was recorded by our shouts: “78! 79! 80!” We took our seats and formed our rocky sea of maroon and gold that screamed and shouted for an hour straight! We didn’t need a pep rally, but it brought us closer to our goal of victory. After the rally, we gathered together in the exercise room and prayed. We finalized our agreement to give the Lyman Hall players the best game they’d ever seen. We separated into our cars to form a motorcade that would travel across town to the field. As we rode through the streets, we screamed and shouted! Waving streamers, we sang to the strains of Billy Joel’s ‘‘Uptown Girl” on the radio. Horns blared and beat to the rhythm of “Titan Power — Titan Power — Ooo-Ahh!” I hung out the window a minute. The wind hit my face and made my eyes tear. But I was smiling. Victory — not really the game itself, but the fact that we were a team, even if only for these few short weeks. Football was the main objective, but I couldn’t separate the togetherness with the sport. Now I knew what the boys felt each year on Thanksgiving. We were a united force, fighting for a pride that we could never lose in a game. I started yelling again and watched the streamers ruffle in the wind, securely anchored to each car. Egg Survives: Period Four SASA Project, Ozzy Osbourne, fails to break in its grueling test of strength. Corporate officials pictured: Lucy Marinuzzi and Kathy Hancich. Student S The Egg Drop Experiment SASA: Sheehan Aeronautics and Space Admin- istration Project: Your group is part of a large corporation attempting to win a contract from SASA worth many millions of dollars. You must design a “space cap- sule” that will safely return to earth (actually a drop from a second story window to the ground below) a multi-million dollar “instrument package” containing hazardous radioactive material. Your “instrument package” will be a raw chicken egg of the type available in any market. Its liquid interior, if spilled, releases dangerous radiation into the crew area and perhaps to the external environment. That’s bad news!!! This is an example of the assignment given to Mr. Cigas’ chemistry students. It is intended to be fun and to force the students to think and to anticipate prob- lems before they happen, so they can be avoided. This experiment is used in other schools, as well as Sheehan, because it gives students some experience in engineering. A Day Of Giving Mannion’s Enthusiasm Successful The Sheehan Bloodmobile. The name brings the image of a crowded gymnasium filled with apprehensive students, waiting for their chance to donate. The founder of the project, Mr. Mannion, is brought to mind along with the nurses, the confusion, and the idea of giving. In the spring of 1978, Mr. Mannion began the Bloodmobile. He felt strongly about this project because of an experience he had in Vietnam. A supply of blood had saved his life. He wanted to encourage young people to donate blood and continue this service throughout their lives. When he called the Red Cross, the details and specifics were over- whelming. Mr. Mannion realized that the Bloodmobile was a much more difficult undertaking than he had anticipated. The complications held the project back for a year. Mr Mannion now encourages both juniors and seniors to participate in the Bloodmobile. He stresses the significance of donating by person- ally visiting individual classes and relating his experiences to the pro- ject. As a restult, Sheehan High School has the largest one-day Blood- mobile in the state. PAL JOEY CAST Row 1: Stage Managers Paula Clogher and Pam Benoit. Maybe it is rundown and managed by a fat, kindly old man who knows the business. Now imagine a young punk, Joey, eager to be famous. He adds life to the old nightclub and changes it into a classy joint with showgirls, music, and dancing. With a little help from a rich, married woman, this young punk has enough moola to start a new nightclub. Picture his name in lights “CHEZ JOEY”. He is on top of the world. But this high ride cannot last for long and a scheme of blackmail stops his dream short. He finds himself broke and alone. This is Pal Joey. An abundance of talent in both acting and directing combined to produce the Senior Class Play taking the audiences back to a 1940's lifestyle. Its success is owed to the support from the students as well as the faculty. Nursery School An Excusive Interview The success of the Nursery School at Sheehan can be seen through the smiling faces of the children and the enthusiasm they show. It develops friend- ships and exposes them to children their own age. The following interview is with one little girl who attended the nursery school, Carly Russell: Did you like It? “Yes, but now it’s all over. Someday I’ll go back.” What did you like about it? “We always col- ored, got in a circle, and painted pretty pictures.” Did you make some friends? “Stephanie and Geoff.” What was your favorite activity? “Steph- anie.” Were the student teachers nice? “Yes — Miss Underwood was very nice.” Did you learn anything? “Songs.” What did you do while you were there? “My nursery school had a Christmas tree and Santa sang songs with us.” Did you have fun? “Yes.” Why? “ Because that’s what school is.” Adult Living Wedding im to- He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts. A financial contribution from the Wallingford Association of Retarded Citizens provided the students' costumes of brightly colored T-shirts to visually express the rainbow theme. Using free-form creative dance and Ameri- can sign language to express some of the lyrics, students performed “Singin’ in the Rain,” Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and “Rain- bow Connection” with the MTS choir. The kids spend their day at Sheehan in a variety of ways. Their bi-annual concert is a good example of what they can accomplish. Friday Nights Sheehan Band Is Florida Bound On Tuesday evening, April 17, 1984, the Sheehan Marching Band and Flag Squad led the Electric Light Parade at Disneyworld, Or- lando. Eighty students, eight parent chaperones and a tour guide made the seven-day excursion to Florida. The early September audition re- quired that Mr. Charles Houlihan, Band Director, submit to Dis- neyworld a recorded tape, photos, and a resume of the band’s perfor- mances. Once notified that they had been selected to participate, band members proceeded to raise the funds necessary to pay ex- penses. With considerable parental and community support, numerous fundraising activities were under- taken. Proceeds from a spaghetti I supper, a bus trip to Altantic City, sales of boxed candy, candy bars and posters were sup- plemented by a very successful raffle. Decorat- ed to request contributions, coffee cans were placed near check-out registers all over town; Wallingford residents responded generously. As their maroon and gold promotional T- shirts announced everywhere, the band was Florida Bound! And the Sheehan community was very proud. Nine To Five Students at Work High costs have affected everyone, even high school students. It seems necessary for teenagers to have a job just to afford basic needs. The minimum wage stands at $3.37 per hour. Regular gasoline costs from $1.04 to $1.11 per gallon; unleaded, $1.14 to $1.18; and super unleaded, $1.28 to $1.39. The price of weekend entertainment has risen sharply over the past several years. Movie tickets range from $3.50 to $4.50 per ticket, unless you pick up your Saturday night date at 1:30 p.m. for a $2 matinee. To get an order of large fries, a Whopper and a large Coke at Burger King, you can expect to pay as much as $3.90! And with the cost of higher education, with little or no help from Financial Aid, students are forced to hold part time and summer jobs to help contri- bute to college expenses. For example, Quinnipiac College in Hamden is approximately $6,000 per year; Yale University, $13,000; and UCONN, a state university, $2,600. Faced with the responsibility of paying or help- ing to pay their own expenses, jobs for high school students are more mandatory than optional. A Friend A friend is someone who knows you and likes you just the same. A friend is someone who cheers for you, although you lost the game. A friend can bring you sunshine, despite the pouring rain. A friend can lend a shoulder to help you ease the pain. A friend is someone who is always there. A friend is one who always cares. In Memoriam My Own Way Sittin’ inside in my room on an empty day. The Titans have a young team and look strong in the future The Girls’ Cross Country team ran courageously to a 00 - 00 record. Lost to graduation were four start ers, including All-Housatonic League player Paul Sherwill. A relatively inexperienced lineup resulted in 2 wins and 13 defeats before beating Housatonic League rival Derby for their only league victory. Senior point guard John Escoto lead the offense throughout the season with class- mate Mike Cohen handling the strong for- ward position. Senior guard Jeff Mihalek was lost early in the season due to a knee injury. Junior Jack Larese, sophomore Rick Brown, and freshman Pat Arnold shared the center position. Guard Mike Fritz and lead- ing scorer Mike Mihalek completed the start- ing five. Cohen, Escoto, Jeff Mihalek and Mike Germanese all completed four seasons with the team. Sophomores Todd Powers, Mark Griffin, Marion Hanna, and freshman Jeff Cohen all saw varsity action. 107 80 L The critical thing is - Coach Becker m ROW 1: Captains Beth Fergusson and Kathy Fritz. Senior Co-Captain Kathy Fritz and sophomore Sandy Battles rotated at the other starting spot to round out the line-up. Coach Hal Becker managed to gain his first post-season birth with victories against Cheshire, Platt, Maloney, Tech. North Ha- ven, Seymour and East Haven. Playing in a league with No. 1 state-ranked Lyman Hall, No. 2 Branford, and top ten Shelton, the young Titans proved to be powerhouse of the future. Stu Schouten filled the num- ber three position while Rob Gerson and Rich Moore maintained slots four and five, with senior John Sicignano number six. Freshman Todd Powers slid impres- sively in and out of the top six positions during the season. Though the team finished at 5 9, Don- arumo has some things to be proud of. Sales Representative for this book was Mr. Jim Toomey; Miss Beth Toomey assisted. Bodyand caption type used throughout this book is eight- and ten-point Souvenir. Headlines were Souvenir, Souvenir Italic and Lydian Cursive, hand set by members of the staff. Paper stock is matte; advertising, ivorytone matte. Books sold for $18 through Thanksgiving and $20 through Christmas, at which time parents were invited by mail to purchase gift books. No extra books were available for sale after that time. The theme, “If the Shoe Fits,” was originated in the spring of 1983 during a brainstorming session in the yearbook classroom with Kathy Fritz, Shelley Pesta, and Rohin Pulit present. It was chosen in an attempt to depict the variety of roles students and faculty portray through the stages of development represented in our high school setting. Individual sections were designed in the spring of 1983, with Mr. Toomey assisting 1983 staff members Fritz. Pesta, Pulit and Paula Clogher in pulling together their collective ideas into an overall design plan Clogher. Pulit and Ms. Jellen attended the 1983 New England Summer Yearbook Workshop at Bryant College, sponsored by American Publishing Company on July 7-9. At that workshop the design concept was finalized and Robin Pulit designed the layout for the traditional baby pictures. The idea for the divider pages was conceived in the fall of 1983; format was determined during a brainstorming session involving the entire period 7 yearbook class of twelve. Thanks to Mrs. Dorothy Torres for her assistance in this design; also, thanks to Mr. Rene Genest of Art Rich Photography for photographing the shoes in his studio. Artwork for the silkscreen cover was prepared by Scott Ogrisek, who also illustrated the sports section and was instrumental in the recording of the details of the Index. Section Editors, credited on page 150. were responsible for carrying out all aspects of their respective pages: preparation of all copy; identifying all individuals pictured for the Index; selection of, and in many cases the shooting of, all photographs; design and layout of all section pages; and coordination of all activities in order to meet deadlines. Special thanks go to Paul Bomto whose photography, consistently of the highest standards, constitutes a large percentage f candids in this book. Sports reports were contributed by Mike Mihalek, an out-of-class staff member. Copy for this book was typed and edited on an IBM Displaywriter word processor by Cheryl Shingler and Ms. Jellen. The official senior portrait and yearbook photographer. Art Rich Photography of North Haven. CT. was responsible for all formal homeroom, faculty, sports team and action photography. Sports photos were also acquired from Mr. Chris French of The Morning Record,” Wallingford Office, and from students. Film and processing were provided by Art Rich Photography. As a June delivery book, this publication must be completed by the beginning of March. As a result, all spring activities will be covered in the 1985 edition. In order to complete this book on time, the following schedule for submitting materials to the publisher (in facing double-page spreads) applied: all color (12 DPS’s), November 1; a total of 23 DPS’s, November 21; 23 DPS's each on January 2 and 30, 1984; and the balance of 25 DPS’s, March 5. One proofing cycle was used for corrections. Yearbook is a one-credit course open to students in grades 9-12. The student selection process includes a written application and personal interview with the advisor prior to course registration in February. Since class space is limited, students are selected on the basis of staff need and individual skills. Photographers are also solicited to work outside the class. Film and processing are provided by the contract photographer. Students having knowledge of 35mm photography are always welcome to participate. Thanks to our advisor, Ms. Irene Jellen, for her assistance and to Sheehan administrators Mr. Paul Marianella. Mr. Tony Fusco and Mr. Ed Goldstone who were very supportive throughout the year. In conclusion, we wish to congratulate the seniors, the rest of the student body, and the faculty and staff for providing the Reflections” editors with so much material with which to develop our theme.
