BROAD, B.A., M.A. ,Iust as a rocket must be guided by a controller, so the Mining and Mechanical Institute must be directed by an able administrator. Our President, Lambert E. Broad, capably executes his duties with vigor, integrity, understanding, patience, fairness, and logical thinking. The problems of the students are of prime importance to Mr. Broad. Because of his sincere devotion to the welfare of the individual and the school, we of M.M.I. regard him with confidence and respect. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE During the past year a great deal has been said in various educational conferences and the public press about the need for sound and challenging education. After all of the discussions they usually come up with a suggestion for a program of offerings or curriculum like your course at M.M.I. Sound training is as good for the SATELLITE age as for any other. You are, therefore, fortunate in having gone through a system which the present day people consider imperative for our leaders of the future. The ideas you learned and the ideals that you developed at M.M.I. will stand you in good stead in furthering your education and in taking your place in the world. Remember that the advantages you have been offered here were possible because of the interest of forward looking citizens and alumni. You are now ready to assume your responsibilities for your further education and the work-a-day world in order that you may, in the future, also help your fellow men and youth toward their even brighter future. Congratulations upon the publication of the 1958 MINAMEK. Best Wishes I 1. President FACULTY -FACULTY- ANDREW J. STOFAN, B.A., M.A. We are truly indebted to Mr. Stofan for guiding us through higher mathematics and preparing us for college. We became highly absorbed and interested in his classes and marveled at his complete mastery of mathematics. The Class of '58 still is trying to ascertain where Mr. Stofan got all his information about our night life. We will always remember Mr. Stofan for his good advice, the lighter moments of his class, and his fine ideals. ALBERT P. GOEDECKE, B.S. Mr. Goedecke has earned the respect and admiration of the students through his hard work and the personal care he takes in the problems of every student. This year he capably directed the basketball team through another successful season. He demonstrated his ability as a coach when he brought the NPreppers into con- tention in the Anthracite League after a slow start. We will always remember Mr. Goedecke, not only as the coach, but also as a fine instructor and friend. JOSEPH L. STARK, B.S. Mr. Stark, one of our capable advisers, certainly gave us a fine background i-n English, literature, and theme and research paper writing. His philosophy that hard work is the only means of success will certainly be beneficial to us in the future. As adviser of the FLASHES, Mr. Stark contributed clever ideas and much time to the betterment of the paper. The class of '58 will always think of him as a man interested in the students' future. 47 -FACULTY- EDWARD J. YARISH, Bs., M.A.i A man who possesses an understanding of youth and his prob- lems, as well as chemistry and biology, is a true instructor. Such is Mr. Yarish, who always gave our class a helping hand. We can connect much of our high school life with him-chlorine gas, flashy neckties, Scranton U., basketball games, thumpers, initiations, and home economics. Next to science, Mr. Yarish has great interest in music, as song-fests proved. JOHN ROESCH, B.A., M.A. Mr. Roesch, head of M.M.l.'s language department, has certainly given us a fine background in the German language and culture. As a native German, educated under the noted gymnasium system, he was able to give us firsthand knowledge of the customs and habits of Europeans, as well as the language. Mr. Roesch is also a violinist par excellence! We will always consider him a good friend and cheerful fellow. l HERMAN W. FRIEDMAN, B.A. As an enthusiastic and conscientious teacher, Mr. Friedman has won the admiration and respect of everyone at M.lVI.I. He is always able to mix a little humor in class, and conducts it in a most interesting fashion. Mr. Friedman, capable senior adviser and frosh basketball mentor, is always ready to discuss student conduct or the sports situation, especially in Plymouth's vicinity. He is an asset to the school in his sincere efforts to give advice and guidance. -FACULTY- RALPH E. WHITMER, B.A. Mr. Wbitmer, to the class of 758, is one teacher who not only dealt with problems of democracy, but the problems of the class, individuals, and the school. His enthusiasm was often displayed in the classroom, but for the most part, it was expended as an avid fan of the Preppers. Mr. Whitmer is a fine worker for the community, as shown by his formation of the Wheel Club. We will remember Mr. Whitmer as an able librarian, who could help you find the correct and pertinent information. EDGAR GOWER, B.S. Mr. Gower, our mechanical drawing instructor, is the only teacher to have a regular bus line fhis red and white '58 Chevy station wagonl between school and White Haven. This year he took 'the reins of the PREPPER baseball squad, a sport in which he was a whiz wit.h the Rivertown High School and the White Haven Aces. Whenever we had problems in drawing and consulted Mr. Gower, we were always greeted by a warm and quiet smile and a willingness to give aid. JOHN WITINSKI, B.S. The most recent addition to the teaching staff, Mr. Witinski performed admirably as a physics and mathematics instructor. He could often be seen explaining to an individual pupil the problems of these courses. Characterized by a willingness to work, Mr. Witinski showed great enthusiasm and interest in his efforts to impart knowledge. Possessing a gregarious nature, his ready smile and pleasant attitude won him many friends among the student body. Her pleasing manner and sincere efforts converted many of our routine days into cheerful ones. Being an alumna of Foster Township, Class of 1953, she proved that our neighboring school can really produce excellent graduates. We are indebted to 'gMiss T for bearing the brunt of the typing for the Minamek. MISS MADLYN DeNOIA I Although her stay at M.M.I. was short, Miss D brightened 1 many of our days with her pleasant smile and witty remarks. She served ably as secretary and was also typing instructor. However, we all liked to think of her as our personal friend and were sorry to see her leave. l was 'j lfth H AP, CHARLES MESMER Little did we realize when school closed last ,lune that we would not be greeted by the beaming face of Charlie on our return to school in September. His departure meant the loss of many moments of fun and relaxation. Fort Howard, Maryland, truly received a fine citizen when Charlie moved there. His efficiency as maintenance engineer was a boon to the operation of the school, and his friendliness endeared him to all. ' DAVID ELLIS A new figure greeted us as we entered school this year. The PREPPERS wound up their 1957-58 season with a 10-15 record, included among which was a four and two record in the Freeland Conference to give them a tie for the championship in that loop. The Mining five opened their season slowly, losing all but one of their games, to powerful opposition in most cases. The PREPPERS were only able to muster two wins in the first half race of the Anthracite League, one of which was a crushing defeat of Foster Town- ship. Then our boys started rolling. We beat McAdoo for the fourth straight time on our home court, 66-62, and then proceeded to break the West Hazleton jinx, 62-57. The PREPPERS ran off five straight victories to earn a tie for the Anthracite League and Freeland Conference. The first of these victories was over Marian Catholic, who had beaten us previously. Then we secured revenge for a one-point loss to Hazle Township. Arch rival Freeland High fell victim, as did White Haven in the last few seconds. The PREPPERS rounded out the regular season by slamming Foster 81-70, and thereby --breaking that jinx. But as in many years past, M. M. I. had to be con- tent with being the bridesmaid. Successive losses to Freeland and McAdoo left us without a title. But we did have the distinction of sharing with McAdoo the honor of having beaten every team in the circuit. Not one escaped the fury of the PREPPER onslaught. M. M. 1. can look forward to a fine team next year, as ours was a year of building. Almost ! Saddler Well's Ballet PORT - Mining wins! Go, man, go! DOTTES BERYLLIIIM CGPPER AN ALLOY WITH THE HARDNESS OF STEEL AND THE CONDUCTIVITY OF COPPER Take 2 !Q beryllium and 98o!o copper, and you have a wonderful alloy with many desirable physical properties. lt has the strength of steel combined with a considerable amount of electrical conductivity. lt has excellent re- sistance to corrosion, wear and an elastic behavior. lt is non-magnetic, and is unaffected by temperature changes over a wide range. In addition to standard compositions, the company has successfully introduced a number of special purpose beryllium copper materials. Among these are alloys developed for particular industries such as resistance welding and mold making. The possibilities of bringing forth still more new and useful alloys by varying the chemistry of beryllium copper are far from exhausted. Beryllium copper is being used successfully in many critical applications, for it is meeting more and more of the special requirements in the exacting field of product design. We are the nation's largest integrated producer- from ore to finished products-of beryllium copper strip, rod, bar, wire, forgings, castings, and extrusions. jLe Eryfgum orporafion P.O.
