Cheer ea. ers All zest! The varsity cheerleaders are chosen in the spring of the year by the student council and a committee of the faculty. On the basis of ability and personality, nine girlsare selected from those trying out from the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Thejunior varsity cheerleaders are chosenixmthe fall by the same group. Only freshmen and sophomores are eligible , and five girls are selected. The responsibilities of the cheerlead- ers are to promote and create school spirit and good sportsmanship. 1968 Homecoming festivities began with a bonfire held on Wednesday, October 16, on the practice football field, At this time the queen and king candidates were presented to the student body by H, C,,MarkHedemann, Mr, Edward Kruse gave a pep talk, Miss Hanan told a story, and cheers were led by the cheerleaders, The bonfire ended with a snake dance, At our pep rally on Friday after- noon, October 18, Mary Jo Engelhardt was crowned Homecoming Queen, Mr, Busse gave a pep talk, and the football boys presented a skit, That night M-F-L had a football victory over Elkader with a score of 32-2, Wayne Erickson was crowned King by Queen Mary Jo Engelhardt at the Victory Dance, which followed the football 83m9.
