At one time, qualifications for teaching were mostly personal attributes rather than training. Even within the last 30 years, it was possible for a person to teach with- out any college work in the rural schools of our state or in tovm if the board would hire the individual. Now a minimum of four years of college work are required for elementary teachers, and four years for a high school teacher. In addition, many teachers spend part of their summer vacation working on advanced degrees Or attending workshops in their - field of instruction to improve the quality of their teaching. During this time, he had the same bus route south of Monona. Many boys and girls rode on his bus during their entire school years at M-F-L. Duties of a bus driver go far beyond safe driving. They include friendly encouragement to a reluctant first-day kindergarten pupil to a. stern repri- mand for youthful enthusiasm on the part of older boys and girls. He took a sincere interest in his passengers and awarded them with treats at Christmas and the last day of school. His acts of thoughtfulness and spon- taneous kindness endeared him to the students of M-F-L. J acld.e Bernhard April 20, 19148 - July ll, 1956 Jackie Bernhard, who would hgve been a. member of the class of 1967, lost his life in a. haying accident. J aclde had completed the first grade and would have entered the sec- ond grade at Monona tha.t fall. He was a. member of the Monona Methodist Sunday School. His classmates will remember Jack- ie as the typical little boy who liked to play ball, roller skate, and enjoy outdoor sports. These students were selected by the faculty on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and servzlce. The program was planned by Donna Lou Scheffert and Harlan Ihlenfeldt, inductees of 1966, and a committee of the faculty. Special guests were parents of the members of the society. Following the program, a reception was held for the members, their parents, and faculty in the home economics room. Entertainment consisted of a vocal trio and instrumental duet. :Vi n..
