Others tell you that you are disgustingly all-American and that you should try to make more enemies. because enemies are a measure of your individuality. You try to find the right proportion between friends and enemies in your life, having many friends but not compromising your ideals to avoid making enemies. There may be one or two people whom you genuinely like and who understand you, and since you value them as a reflection of yourself, you begin to value yourself more. Perhaps at Lyons Township High School there is a distorted relationship between realism and idealism. Each student spends hours reading Emerson's Self-Reliance and Cervantes's Don Quixote, and if he believes hard enough he gets an A for his effort. He is then shown that in the real live world he should think like everyone else, that radicals like Gandhi, Jefferson, and Jesus Christ who looked at windmills and saw something else, are illegal now. Perhaps that's the way it should be . . . but then again .... ...st --.....,.-L
