“Poem We, the Class of 53 , Make our last and final plea, To all who think they cannot learn Although they always want to turn. Look to see if you won't agree That there is much that you can be, If you'll only try to see You'll end up with a victory. As we start out in the world There'll be a lot of hardships hurled- But as we go farther along We will become exceedingly strong, We will do our tasks- Along with the questions that we ask. But when we are on our own, We will have to worry and moan About the things that we have planned To make our last and final stand. We thank our teachers, parents, too We have enjoyed working with you. Though we are not always grand We will try to work and plan, Because we think you're great We will try to keep a clean slate- But now that we are leaving We have yet to be receiving The awards of great success. When commencement time has come at last, We'll face the future with a smile And try to make our lives worth while. 17

'ftycatO'lCf We boarded a train in 1949, at Toledo, and our leaders were Mary Ellen Sargent, and Paul Sallows, Carol Gillespie acted as recorder and Dale Hoops took care of our financial needs while Sue Waldron, acted as student council member. Before the conductor yelled, All Aboard , Mr. King, our advisor, took roll call. He found that there were twenty-seven passengers aboard. Among these, were Arlene Nichols, Mary Ellen Sar- gent, Carol Gillespie, Paul Sallows, Gerald O'Leary, Sue Waldron, Char- lene Santee, Phyllis Waldron, Harold Holland, Gayle Ries, Richard Hinkle, James Ersham, Max Shaw, Richard Barth, George Kesler, Duane Conrad, Dale Hoops, Leroy Gillespie, Raymond Tack, Donna Vance, Beverly Shee- ley, Sam Miller, Barbara Lewandowski, Mary Jane Graham, Gordon Hart- sell, Edward Wilson, and Raymond Patterson. We arrived in San Francisco, California, in September, 1950, with our leaders as follows: President, Paul Sallows; Vice President, Gordon Hartsell; Secretary, Harold Holland; Treasurer, Max Shaw; and student council member, Phyllis Waldron. Much to our surprise we discovered that Arlene Nichols, Gayle Ries, Duane Conrad, Sam Miller, James Ers- ham, and Mr. King, liked the climate of the West so well, they decided to stay and enjoy it. We realized that we needed a new advisor, so we scouted around Holly- wood and among the stars we found Mr. Thorburn. The following decided that they would like to join the trip; they were Marvin Keith and Dale Lather. When we arrived in Alaska, in 1951, under the leadership of President, Sue Waldron; Vice-President, Carol Gillespie; Secretary, Charlene Santee; Treasurer, Mary Ellen Sargent; student council members, Beverly Sheeley and Harold Holland. We discovered that Phyllis Waldron, Donna Vance, Beverly Sheeley, Richard Hinkle, Marvin Keith, and Mr. Thorburn decided to continue their trip in the Northern part of the Continent. We decided to stay in Alaska for a visit and much to our surprise we found we needed a new supervisor. While on a whaling trip, we noticed a man stranded on a small iceberg, we picked him up and found his name to be Mr. Mitchell. He was so grateful for rescuing him, that he im- mediately accepted our supervisor's office. Then in 1952, we started our journey back to Lyons, Ohio, U.S.A. We took roll call, and found that Dale Hoops and Mr. Mitchell had decided to stay in Alaska. After canvassing an Eskimo Village, we discovered a handsome man and on inquiry we found his name was Mr. Johnston. We brought him with us as our supervisor for our homeward journey. The leaders were, Presi- dent, Mary Ellen Sargent; Vice-President, Max Shaw; Secretary, Barbara Lewandowski; Treasurer, Carol Gillespie; student council members, Harold Holland, Paul Sallows, and Gordon Hartsell. The trip was enjoyed by all and we were very disappointed to see it end. 18
