LYONS TALE JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LYONS,NEW'YORK VOLUME 9 7 nrefnnrrl This year it is our aim to familiarize you with some of our local landmarks. The structures of our forefathers were built to withstand the elements, the aqueduct of the old Erie Canal, the old mill, the octagonal blacksmith shop, the little red schoolhouse, and the church with the cemetery near-by. These existing proofs of our ancestors' strength, endurance, intelligence, and faith should be a challenge to us in this world of conflicts. Will we, today's young men and women, be able to carry on this inspiring tradition set forth by our forefathers? ghenlitaiiun VIVIAN M. HENRY The members of the Senior Class of 1961 wish to dedicate this edition of the Lyons Tale to our adviser, Miss Vivian Henry, whose sincere helpfulness has contributed greatly towards its success. Guiding and directing us in our task, Miss Henry has been the keystone in the production of this yearbook. Without her patience and experience, the book you now hold could never have been published. So it is with our deepest gratitude and appreciation for your endless faith in us, and for all your efforts, that we thank you by dedicating this yearbook to you --------------- MISS HENRY F 0 gin emnrmm :Hun 252111521 On August 27, 1960, Cpl. Jon Hansel, while serving with the Marines near Nago on Okinawa, was instantly killed when the vehicle in which he was riding missed a curve and over- turned.. A Marine escort accompanied the body of Cpl. Han- sel from the Far Pacific base to New York, a distance of near- ly 10,000 miles. He was buried with full military honors on September 10. Since Ion was a graduate of our school and an ex-athlete, we dedicate this page of our yearbook to him. 5' Q 41111 emurmm i nrmzm 01. Ernst The sudden death of our beloved guidance counselor and teacher on March 6, 1960, was a great shock to everyone. For seventeen years Mr. Brust had faithfully helped us through our difficult times. Although he is not here to assist us personally, his wise advice will continue with us through our remaining years. As a token of our appreciation, we would like to dedicate this page of our yearbook to a man who was dearly loved by all. ma aier Far above all other High Schools Stands our L, H, S, g We have always won the honors, We will take no less. Chorus: Raise the chorus, speed it onward! Let our voices ringgg Hail to thee, dear Lyons High School We shall ever sing. In athletics and in classes Lyons takes first place, For we have the student body That can set the pace. x K 46,51 I M .4 'fn 'sn . During your span of time, change and new- ness have brought great material progress, com- fort and satisfaction, We have learned to travel farther and faster, communicate more quickly, in- vent greater destructive power and amass more knowledge regarding strange phenomena than any generation. Yet our progress has resulted in a world confounded with fear and frustration. The education you have received has been more comprehensive than even the preceding gen- eration would have thought possible. With this accumulation of knowledge which should help you meet the challenge of the future, we hope you have developed a quality of understanding and found guiding principles for your life. We hope you have learned the indispensability of love to every human being, of relatedness to someone and of being of value to others. Our interdependence with others is the most encom- passing fact of human realityg our personalities are made by our contacts with others. It is simple kindness for which all mortals hunger, The pivot on which our lives must revolve is the realization that everyone is a dignified, essential human soul, Your emerging challenge is to utilize the comprehensive knowledge you have acquired and the simple truths of human relations to find a solution to the world's fears. Go forth and serve your fellow men with the thought that you will improve the changing world of your youth. WORDS F WISDOM ELBERT S, ATWOOD Vice-Principal Judge Yourself Most Seniors approach graduation with mixed feelings, Through the years many have taken for granted the opportunities offered by the school and the guidance of their parents. They now begin to realize that they are about to close one era and approach a more mature challenge in life. The time to summarize and utilize that which has passed in these formative years now becomes imperative. Some things seem to have immediate importance, while other things may appear as non-essential for the future. As you assume the role of a young adult citizen, it might be well to ask yourself: Has accepting become a habit? What have I given in return? Are material things paramount in my future planning? If you can answer these honestly, you will realize that much of your future happiness will de- pend upon your capacity to be of service to others, The happiness you help create for others will de- termine the degree of your own happiness and self esteem. This is the criteria for lasting success, BOARD OF EDUCATIO WILLIAM C, LASHER IOI-IN M, LENTS Presldent V106 Presldent VINCENT I. On the agenda were a bake sale and the sale of fruit cakes. Could anyone forget the confusion of order mix-ups? We were really moving in our junior year when Ted Hill was elected president and Mr. Williams was chosen as our class adviser. We sponsored the refreshment stand at the football games and sold book covers and stationery. Finally, it was our turn to plan the Junior Prom, Three Coins in a Fountain, We workedhard and our efforts paid off, even though the decorations were a bit too realistic, Although the junior rings put a dent in our pocketbooks, they really made us feel like upperclassmen, At last, we entered our final year, selecting the same president and adviser, Like our predecessors we took over the milk bar and the refreshment stand at the basketball games,In our magazine sales we really outdid ourselves by going over our quota of 35,5005 of this we were very proud, Our long awaited Senior Ball, Winter Paradise , was held on December 23, with the Mellotones providing the music, The decorations were beautiful and well worth our planning. These activities, along with the senior play, so enriched our treasury that we were able to take the trip to Washington during the second week in May, With the singing of the Alma Mater and the playing of Pomp and Circumstance on ,T une 23, our Commencement night, the class of '61 will go confidently forth to face new horizons and other landmarks. WINTER PARADI E For many of us, the words, Winter Paradise , December 23, and The Mello- tones , hold a special meaning, It was on this date that good ole St, Nick visited Lyons and helped the Seniors by collecting tickets at our Senior Ball, which was held in the high school gym. Even though the night was cold, we could find no fault because we were in such heavenly moods, Dancing to the music of the Mellotones was out of this world! The climax of the evening came when Ellen Closs and Steve Ronan were chosen to reign over our Paradise , attended by Carolyn Beader, Judy Barclay and Marcia Miller, All in all, it was the most wonderful night of our lives, one we shall never forget, Dreaming of Paradise Senior Ball Committee Chairmen Now since we all know sin2x+cos2x:l-- Miss Read's Trig class Step right up . I must admit that I approached the prospect of leaving home to spend a year in a foreign country with some trepidation, but my fears were unfounded, and I have really enjoyed my sojourn in your country, The warmth that the people of this community have displayed in showing me their way of life and their attitudes, has helped me immensely to understand America's position in the world today. This has endeared you to me and made me deeply grateful, so that it will be with deep regret thatl shall depart, carrying with me a far more accurate picture of the United States, her people, and their philosophies. I feel sure that the student from Lyons, who is selected to go overseas, will learn to understand the ideals of foreign peoples and will gain invaluable experience by which he will grow and mature to become a better adult. John Beal, Lyons Student to Germany MA Y THAN KS: I consider 'myself most fortunate to have been selected as the first American Field Service student from Lyons Central School to go abroad for the summer. My stay in Germany will be an ever- lasting memory, I would like to thank everyone who made this trip possible. I hope the student who goes abroad this year will be as fortunate as I was to have as fine a family as hosts, fx!! Sparked by one of the finest backfields ever assembled in the Finger Lakes League, the Lyons Central Powers completed their season with a grand total of 5 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. A large measure of this year's success should be credited to our fleet halfback, Paul De John, to Senior halfback, Damon Barnes, to our aggressive All-Conference center, Joe Holly, and to our powerful fullback, Don Allen. To climax the season with another first, Lyons wrested the Wayne County Championship from Clyde for the first time since 1949 with a grand shutout of 39-0 over the Clyde Blue Devils. The Lyons Central Powers are expected to produce an even fin- er football team next year as our star quarterback, Joe Arnitz, will be back in action. 63 VARSITY BASKETB Li.
