Lyons Senior Gets County DAR Award Miss Nina Ray, Lyons High School senior , has been chosen winner of the Greene County Good Citizenship contest sponsored by the West Fork Chapter Daughters of American Revolution. Seniors from the Lyons, Bloomfield, Jasonville, Midland, Linton, and Worthington High Schools of the county participated in the contest. The county winner will compete in a State Good Citizenship contest. The winner of the State Con- test will receive a Sl00.00 Series E Savings Bond, a pin and a certificate of award. Each Good Citizen will receive a certificate of award from the National Society of Daughters of American Revolution. The Good Citizenship contest is an educational project having the sanction ofthe National and indiana Association of secondary school principals. The selection is made by the following method: The senior class by vote chooses three girls of their class who possess the following qualities to an outstand- ing degree. iii Dependability, which includes truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality. i2J Services which includes cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others. C31 Leadership, which includes personality, courtesy and consideration of others. C41 Patriotism, unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation. From the three girls thus elected the high school faculty selects one who becomes a Good Citizen of the school. The Good Citizens of each school in the county are given a written examination pro- vided for by the State D. A.R. to determine the county winner. The girl receiving the highest score in the county then competes in the state. 46

fan! lfistoty The Lyons High School Band has had an active season since the i954 issue of the annual. On March l2, l954, they were one of six Greene County schools participating in the Greene County Band Festival, held at Jasonville. On March 26, the band was honored at a supper by the Band Booster Club and per- formed for them, giving formations on the basketball floor. April 6, the band had its annual party at the Jasonville skating rink. April l3, a number of the members attended a concert given by the lndima University Concert Band. On April 23, the band participated in the Spring Music Festival. Honor sweaters were given to the three seniors in the band by Mrs. Garland Hasler, president of the Band Boosters Club. The seniors receiving awards were: Phyllis Floyd, Kay Lace, and Loretta Steele. During the summer, the band marched in five parades: Memorial Day at Lyons, Fourth of July Parade at Linton, Worthington Fair, Indiana State Fair, and Ellettsville Fair. They also gave concerts at the Elnora Fair and the Lyons Fair. This was the first year that the Lyons Band entered the Indiana State Fair Parade. lt plans to make it an annual affair. On September 26, the band marched in a Legion parade at Bloomfield, honoring the veterans ofthe Korean War. The Flag swingers: Sondra Edwards, Karen McCarty and Nancy Rody, and the baton twirlers: Pat Higgins, Kay Nichols, and Dot Rollison entered the district twirling contest at Huntingburg on October l6. The band has demonstrated marching formations at six home basketball games this school year, and will be in the Greene County Band Festival at Linton on Nlarch 26 with the other seven Greene County bands. Twenty band members were entered in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at lndiana University on February 5 and three duets and one soloist will be entering the State Solo and Ensemble Contest at Butler University in Indianapolis on February l9. The band plans to enter the band playing contest in April and to give the annual band pro- gram that same month. This year's seniors who'will be awarded honor sweaters at this concert are: Sherry Leavitt, Jo Nichols, Delmar O'Neall and Nina Ray. New members in the band this year are: Dallas Benham, Marilyn Braun, Linda Brown, Gale Browning, Larry Browning, Phyllis Heckman, Sherry Leavitt, David Martindale, Delmar O'Neall, Linda Mullis, and Martha Wright, making the total number of band members forty-one. GRAND CHAMPION DAIRY AWARDS 4-H AWARDS Ted Ray was selected Grand Miss Nina Ray, a senior, was this Champion winner of the Junior year's winner of the dairy achieve- 4-H Corn Club.
