I lust came back from a delayed and much wanted vacation I was down around the old community and school where we had so many good times I ran into some of the old classmates who have not ventured somewhere else for their fortune, and I thought you might be interested in their whereabouts While shopping in Bloomfield one day, I met none other than the used to be Blnnne Bosell She told me she married Hugh Branson and they have a little Branson She told me that Edward Ketchem was in New York We had quite a laugh You know what a Yankee fan Eddie was He now owns the Yankees He was married to the daughter of the Brooklyn Dodgers manager, but their marriage failed when he caught her drilling holes In his team s bats I also chanced to meet Ray Bedwell and Jack Summerville They were telling me about their new Diesel Trucking Lines They have set a new record for safety and speed in coast to coast freight hauling They told me about Snr Frank Flynn He IS planning an expedition to Africa to bring back some animals for the Lyons Zoo which is owned by his former classmate, Avery Padgett Avery is planning eventually to make the Lyons Zoo, which IS the third one he has organized, the world s largest while I WGS In Newberry, Indiana, on business, I met Lula Lambrlght, who IS now Swrtz Cnty has consolidated with Newberry Newberry is now a prosperous community, since the addition of an atom bomb plant to the fair city Phil Mercer is manager over the plant He is making S200 O00 a year H s 'ob takes him all over the world Phil is not married as yet, but IS stall hoping He rs one ofthe country s most eligible bachelors, and this year was voted the best-dressed man for I960 I was window shopping when I bumped into Kay Lace She told me that she was living on a farm west of Worthington and is very happy and that Phyllls Floyd and Patsy Vaughn were operatmg a glamorous night club in Hollywood, Callfomla Phyllis rs gettmq manned on the fifth of June and gomg to Paris on her honeymoon, and, as usual, no one knows who the guy is Patsy rs still unmarried, but not for long, from what I hear I stopped in Bloomfield on my way home I ran into Pattle Nichols Edwards and since she IS a money making fashion designer, she bought me a cup of coffee I learned from her that Loretta Steele as secretary for the President of the United States She is now married to the president of Purdue University I had lust gotten home and settled myself in an easy chalr, when the doorbell rang When I opened the door who should be standing there but .llm Duffey He IS now playing ball with the New York Kmckerbockers I8 . , . . . . . . . , . , . . . l l I I I I I O O ' I principal of the Newberry High School. This year Leah Jackson and Dulcene Byers left, but we have gained Mariorie Plano from Newberry and we now have twenty-four pupils. The class officers this year are: Henry Bosell, president, Ronnie Hollingsworth, vice-presiden Marshal Pickard, treasurer, Betty Lee Wright, news reporter. We have nine girls from our class in the band, and ten in the Girls' Glee Club The three junior high cheerleaders are in the seventh grade. They are Marietta Floyd, Karen Hollars, and Kay Nichols. Eight boys are on the junior high basketball team. There are seven boys in 4-H. We have enioyed a Halloween party, a wiener roast, girls in 4-H. X, I'! my lu ,- f I Boy? 4-H Club The enrollment of the Boys' 4-H Clubs has increased under the leadership of Mr. Heckman from forty-four in 1948 to ninety in i95l, but has declined slightly since. ln 1948, there were no Boys' 4-H Club Charters at Lyons, but that year the completion was high enough that the Sons of the Soil, Sr. Charter was earned. Two years later a second charter for Sons ofthe Soil, Jr. was eamed, plus a seal for the first charter. These two standard clubs of Lyons have participated in all the various county iudging contests, leadership training meetings, and county 4-H shows, winning their share of awards every place they went. Flrst pnzes School Lunch Program ln the summer of T947 the Women s Socnal and Benevolent Club undertook as a club prolect the sponsormg of the School Lunch Program for the Lyons Public School The purpose of the lunch program was to nmprove the health ofthe chnldren through a program of servung essential, warm, palatable food nn the form ofa balanced duet The program as operated on a self supportlng non profit basus to help all chlldren andparents who wlsh to avail themselves of the opportunity of securing a well-balanced meal at a reduced cost The pupils pand twenty cents each day for their lunch, and the teachers pand thnrty cents A half-pmt of mnlk was served with each lunch, and because of thus, a seven cent government relmbursement on the mllk was received from the state for each student plate served Thus 1-s called a Type A lunch No other type of lunch has been served to our students In l95l the Newberry pupils were sent to Swltz Cnty Central School and the enrollment of our school was decreased by that number For the school year of l953 54 the staff has been Mrs Mildred Patterson, Mrs Ella Wrnght and Mrs Nina Horn ind Large quantltles of surplus food commodntles are recelvecl from the Department of Publnc Welfare of the Federal Government The only cost of these commodmes as usually freught charge and sometimes a small storage charge Practlcally the same routme, with sllght varnatnons, has been followed throught the seven year program Each day a prayer of thanks and gratitude ns offered by a student, and speclal menus planned and small treats glven on holudays Due to the higher cost of food and the lowermg of the renmbursement rate, the pruce of the lunch has been ransed to twenty Eve cents Wlth the present enrollment, the dolly average as about one hundred and fnfty pupuls and teachers eating The puplls and teachers of the lower grades eat first at tables which are completely set for them The tables are then cleared and the remalmng grades and hugh school pass by the wmdow which opens from the kltchen Into the drnlng hall and get theur own table servlce, plate lunch and dessert They go to the tables where thenr mllk has been placed for them The last group stack thenr own dishes, thus clearmg thear own tables 62 I . . He started on the varsity both his junior and senior years. Phil was best known on the ball floor by his speed and ability to steal the ball. He also has done a good iob in the scoring department Phil has scored 365 points of his team's 1185. He has averaged better than seventeen points per game. Ed Ketchem Cen ter Forward This has been Ed s second year on the varsity H played on the B team hls sophomore and 'unnor years Ed also substituted on the varsity hrs lunlor year H best recognuzed by his fnne defensuve work on the tall men and has ablllty to play any posltnon on the floor Th s IS Ed s last year and It has been a very successful one Ed has scored 75 pomts of hls team s H85 Jack Summerville Center Jack, orlglnally from Arlzona, moved to Lyons last year Havlng very llttle basketball experuence, he went to work and moved right ln to the startmg center posltlon on the varsity Jack s reboundung ablllty has been one of the reasons for his team s successful season. He has done some fine work getting the ball Off the boards and will be greatly missed by next year's team. This team should make a good freshman and B team for Coach Aydelotte next year. They will grow and improve over the summer months in their basketball ability, The Lyons Jr. High will play in two toumaments this yea- - the Greene County Grade Toumey and the Plainville Invitational Grade Toumey. The s will make a good showing in both toumeys. The Lyons Junior High B Team closed the season with eight wins and six losses. All of these will make up the eighth grade team next year, and we will give the other county teans strong competition for the county championship. The iunior high yell-leaders were chosen the same day as the high school yell-leaders.
