STUDENT BODY ACHIEVEMENT As a result of excellent co-operation, the students of Lynwood High School have ac- complished much during the year 1941-42. With the forming of new defense organizations, the participation both of groups and of individual students in athletic and scholastic contests, and the prompt response of all to several charities, the student body brought honor to the Castle. DEFENSE ACTIVITIES Keeping in step v ith the defense program of the nation, several new after-school classes in defense v ork were formed in mid-year. Classes in first aid, canteen work, junior air warden duties, paper and tin salvaging, and victory gardening gave the members of the student body a chance to aid their nation. As part of the homeroom program all students were instructed in the proper procedure in case of an air raid and in the correct manner for extinguishing an incendiary bomb. Students were also given a chance to purchase war savings bonds and stamps in their homerooms. An amount of money large enough to support a Chinese baby for a full year was raised for the China Relief Fund, thus making the student body an esteemed grandparent. STUDENT BODY MONEY Money belonging to the student body was used wisely for the benefit of all. Indian pictures for the classrooms were purchased, and loudspeakers were provided for rooms outside the main building. The drama department received additional costumes and more stage equipment. New basketball suits were secured, and money was appropriated for the repair and upkeep of track and football suits. Emblems and letters were procured for various school organizations, while money was also spent for candy as prizes in home- room contests. During the year the student body enjoyed three motion pictures: The Buccaneer , Seventeen , and Abraham Lincoln . CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS Students and faculty members have donated time, money, and effort for charity. Stu- dents contributed to the March of Dimes, prepared Christmas baskets for the needy, and assisted the Red Cross. NEW ORGANIZATIONS Three new organizations have been issued charters by the student council. The Pan- American Club and the Panamettes were sponsored by the Rotary Club. The Boys ' Octette provided musical numbers for many programs. WINNERS Emerging in numerous essay and speech contests were several Lynwood students. District winner in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Essay Contest on Unity for Victory was a tenth grade student, Rosemary Truesdell. Another tenth grade student. Daily Childs, who was given the opportunity to read his prize-winning essay on What the Bill of Rights Means To Me over station KGER, was also given the honor of having his essay printed in the Congressional Record- In the American Legion Oratorical Contest, Alvin Rozelle proved to be the best speaker in the nineteenth district. The student band won first place in the Toyland Parade at San Pedro and again took top honors in the All-Western Band Review in Long Beach. More athletic awards have poured into the Castle trophy room this school year than ever before in the history of L.J.H.S. The senior teams set a new all time Lynwood record by winning championships in four of the five sports. Co-championships were won after strenuous campaigns by the upper division football and basketball squads, while the senior tennis and baseball teams won championships outright. The juniors won the championship in the realm of tennis. SOCIAL AND HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES Following the usual custom at the Castle, on October 31 the Hallowe ' en parade and P.T.A. Carnival not only provided fun for the students but also aided in filling the treasury. In December through music and drama the Christmas vesper services told the story of Christ ' s birth. Not only an artistic but also a financial success was the three-act play, Ever Since Eve, given at two evening performances in April. For the purpose of acquainting parents with the type of work done in each class, a school exhibit was held on May 21.
