This is an ex- cellent description of those who are being honored for their work in school as teachers, counsel- ors, and administrators. Outside of school they have been a guiding light for the citizens of the community as they have been to us, the students. Through their efforts many improvements have materialized with the thought ofthe student in mind. Through their interests in school activities and inter-school activities, we have become outstanding in sportsmanship. N, May this 1959 Accolade serve as a monument to their accomplishments and to express the appreciation of the students of Lynwood High School for their many years of untiring work. TO Mrs. Regina O. Edington and Mr. Edward J. Miller we sincerely dedicate this book. '65 xx f ww 7 f WW ww Mf VW W Y E -.K X ! JZ f W4 fi! ,,,,,,,..f,,, ,aww ., Ll,l0Ql Ll'lfQI'lJQl'lf .SZOPQGL gave! Guided through the hectic years by the leadership of presidents Mickey Bach, Howard Mattoon, and Bob Steiner, these upper-classmen remember without disat- isfaction the difficult transition from full to half and back to full-day sessions. Climaxing the most exciting year of all, the typical dream of a l2th grader came true with the construction of a senior square. The class began celebrating their last year in November with the Moon- light Fantasy restricted to members of the '59 class only. Following a memorable homecoming and a successful Christmas Dance, the next major senior project was their play Cheaper by the Dozen. This event was proceeded with the talent and awards assemblies. In closing the door on their high school career, the seniors spent a busy last week at the Baccalaureate service, Irvine Park, senior dinner dance at the Los Coyotes Country Club, graduation and the all- night party. enior ofgaclemkila i l l l 4 1 i l l l SENIOR CLASS COUNCIL Row 'l: J. C0!LdglfLQ6 SOPHOMORE CLASS The sophomore class started off the year 'th ' ' wi a bang, having meetings all summer to plan the annual welc f ome or the incoming freshmen. Later the class s ponsored another dance for the wh l o e school entitled Autumn Welcome which w as a great success. At homecoming the efforts ofthe soph- omores were turned to the production of a homecoming float. Although the float, They Said It Couldn't Be Done - They Were Right didn't win an award the class was proud of its proiect. As a fund raising project the Sophs sold Lynwood name labels which proved to be very helpful to the students and very profitable for the treasurey. The most recent endeavor of the Class of T961 was the ordering of the class rings. These rings will arrive shortly after school begins next year. Presently the class is looking forward to a summer record hop. President Jerry Swanitz happily reported that many such activities are in store for the solvent so h- P omores in the years to come at the old Castle. 41. 0l'l'U'I'LQl'lCe ,, W JohneTTe Ward and Arlo Engel were selecTecl for Their oulstancling Hawaiian ouTfiTs during The Lunchtime festivities of Hawaiian Day. The second hassle, in which we iourneyed to Bellflower, settled into a disappointing 6-6 tie. Fumble played an important part in keeping the Knights from running up a larger score as they defeated Jordan 21-7, for their second win in three games, ln our next game we traveled to Lakewood and ran over them to the tune of 21-6 to hand them their first loss. For Compton, our next game, school spirit was at its highest peak and the undefeated Knights won 27-T4 to spoil the Tarbabes Homecoming. The next week Downey, in quest of its third Coast League title upset our unbeaten eleven with a score of 25-6. It was a big night for the Downey Viking homecoming, At Earl Warren High the next week our grid forces lost a close, l4-l3, match, which was a bitterly fought battle all the way to the finish. In our annual Homecoming Game the league leading Paramount Pirates proved to be too much as they won with a 32 to 2l decision. But when Coast League play started there was a change and they had l win and 3 losses after the first 4 games. Then the team settled down and won an amaz- ing string of 8 games in the remaining 9 and with 2 games left in the season Lynwood was tied for the Coast League Championship. When our knights lost an 8 inning game to Paramount we ended up in second place for the second year. In the opening round of the C.l.F. playoffs they were beaten 7-5 by El Monte in a heartbreaking game that stretched for lO innings. ln our league they played 15 games and won lO. They beat Downey 3 times and took every series except for Paramount. The season record was the best in 4 years with 17 wins and 8 losses. Jim Larsen was the leading hitter with a .400 batting average, and John Robles was the lead- ing pitcher with lO wins against 3 losses. 1ffv.N-0: ,,, mx N -R, X ,i -sea: - V . Bleeker, Wootton and Lerch pour it on as they come around the last turn during their 440. 158 MR. DEL DEQUINEg Varsity Track Coach L , j , fig W-if X 7 , hai! This was not exactly a glorious season for Coach Del Dequine's track teams but at the end of the season we still placed five boys in the CIF quarterfinals. Paul Largent, the only varsity man to gain en- trance, went in on the strength of his second place mile run during the Coast League finals. In the Bee competition Pen- gra and Riddle placed first and second in the 1320 yard run and Foster and Halley scored a first and second in the Bee shot- put. In season meets our varsity track men won O while losing 5 although many new records were set, especially in the shot- put department with Reader and Griffin trading the school record back and forth during the season. To our fine adviser Mr. John Eletto, who carried us over many rough spots with his able asistance and congenial guidance. Without his encouragement and advice, this book could not have been completed. To Jim Swenson for all the extra tasks he performed besides his regular duties. I could not have asked for a more faithful person on the staff than Jim. To Tommy Thomas and the entire business staff for their efficiency in obtain- ing ads for the advertisement section and handling the sale of the books. To Carole Lee for her able assistance in writing copy whenever needed, and for the responsibility of the Activities section. To Susan Burl-eson and Karen Christie for their able and competent work as Classes editors. To Vicki Bugg who carried the load of the Organizations section by herself for the mostpart. This included scheduling pictures, and identifying them. To Sandra Sharp who was responsible for the complete Administration section of the book. To Harriet Gardner and Carol Ester for their assistance in every section of the book, from typing ads, writing copy, and identifying pictures at the last minute. To Mr. Saul Skolnick, Jerry Courtrade, Don Brown, and Ruth Ann Zurborg and the photography staff for whom I owe a lot of thanks because without their help at scheduled times and at the very last minute, this book would have been full of blank pages without activity pictures. To Mr.Anthony Loya and his staff for the excellent photography and especial- ly for the outstanding division pages. To Mr. Jack Cannicott, our efficient engraver, and his staff for his constant help throughout the year, and particularly at the end for his added time and effort to insure us of having the finest book possible. Without his guidance, I think I would have been lost. To Mr. Keith Cordney, our patient and understanding printer, and his staff for all the hard work and extra time he put in so that we would have the book early. To each of those mentioned and to the countless others who assisted us in numerous ways I sincerely and gratefully thank you.
