benwr Class H lstory FLIGHT '56 Rlchard Dear1nger Charles Gause Gary Needham M1l11e Lew1s Gene Ver Steeg and Larry W1llemsen purchased t1CketS August 30 1943 for a graduatlon f11ght After board1ng the a1rplane they found the1r p1lot to be Letha Br1ggs On the second leg of the1r Journey they were p1loted by Vera R1dpath followed by Nesha Fudge Robert Conn Barbara Evans Rlchard 'Ierpstra Pat Verwers and a new p11ot Fre1da Br1gnon, Jomed Fl1ght '56 at the fourth stop makxng the passenger l1st total ten It was smooth sa1l1ng Wlth Nell1e Dav1s 1n the cockplt dur1ng the s1xth run and Robert McCaulley followlng her May 1952 Fhght '56 paused br1efly for recogn1t1on of the part of the Journey the a1rplane had completed As the ten members found themselves soar1ng now through the Stratosphere they became acqualnted w1th four new passengers Arn1e DeRu1ter Ronn1e Dunwoody, Glenn Van Dyke Carolyn Wagamon and p1lot K '1' Hancer Stops enroute were made to p1ck up Joan Van Manen and Gaylord Elscott stop There the last passenger Dor1s Sparks made her entrance The an-plane landed halfway through the last leg of the Journey to change p11ots Geo W Evans took the control May ZZ 1956 after a happy prof1table Journey the g1ant a1rplane came Onto a land1ng Strlp for the last t1me where all of the passengers descended from the a1rplane to go then' separate ways 1 I O . . , , , . . . , , . . , , I . . . l I 1 1 2 D 3 . . . : . . , . Senwr Class Prophecy In the fall of 1966 we of the Class of '57 were hav1ng ur annual reun1on at the Waldorf Astor1a 1n New York We dec1ded to tour the Unlted States 1n search of the Sen1or Class of '56 As we toured the h1ll country of Pennsylvan1a we ran 1nto a 'moonsh1ne d1st1llery owned and operated by Glenn Van Dyke Glenn was very happy to see us and 1nv1ted us 1n to see the w1fe and elght k1ds You can 1mag1ne our surprlse when we saw Joan Van Manen washlng Jugs to bottle the moonsh1ne Glenn offered us all a dr1nk, but we all agreed we had to go On our way to Wash1ngton D C we stopped to v1s1t the U S S Tub bucket As we boarded Shlp we saw a tall, sl1m sa1lor gayly scrubblng the poop deck He lookedfamlllar and we were sure who lt was when we heard h1s h1ll b1lly s1ng1ng Sure enough, lt was Seaman Larry Wlllemsen We couldn't talk to Zeke long because h1s cornrnandlng off1cer Madman' Needham, ordered h1m below de k As the shlp was about to depart we W1tneSSCd a touchlng farewell scene between Capta1n Gary Needham and lus w1fe to be Barbara Evans Barbara 1nv1ted us to attend the1r wedd1ng next June We assured her that we would be there Wh1le tour1ng the capt1al we stopped 1n to llsten to a debate 1n the Umted States Senate There we saw Senator Charles W Gause g1v1ng a long wmded speech on the top1c of low salar1es for senators He was very busy so we had l1ttle t1me to talk to h1m Our next stop was at Nashvllle Tennessee where we met M1ldred Lewls who told us of her great success as a h1ll b1lly s1nger We w1shed her luck w1th her mus1c and journeyed on We traveled on to V1S1t the vast o1l f1elds of Texas Much to our aston1shment we found o1l tycoon Rlchard Terpstra who ovsms three fourths of the o1l 1n Texas We got 1nto h1s Cad1llac to dr1ve from h1s back yard to h1s g1gant1c ranch house Who do you suppose we found h1s chauffeur to be 'P None other than Robert Conn was at the wheel R1chard told us that th1s was the f1fth car that Robert had run to death th1s year On the way to the ranch house he ran down four coyotes three pra1r1e dogs andgust mmssed a long horned steer We left Texas for the fabulous c1ty of Las Vegas On the way mto the c1ty we saw a s1gn whlch read Pat's Poker Parad1se We found the owner to be Pat Verwers She 1nv1ted us to tour her establlshment At the dlce table we found Sl1ck flngers' Elscott 1n charge Gaylord told us that he was also the ch1ef bouncer As we went by the racetrack we heard that Ron Dunwoody was r1d1ng rn the next race We stayed to watch the race Unfortunately he came 1n last but we agreed that he would have done better 1f he would have carr1ed the horse As we were golng through the h1lls of Utah we saw a prospector leadmg h1s mule over the h1ll We stopped to ask h1m d1rect1ons and found h1m to be none other than Arme DeRu1ter He sa1d that he was prospect1ng for uran1um but he hadn't found any yet H Sald lf we would go w1th h1m back to the cabm he would have h1s old lady cook us some grub We weren't surpr1sed to fxnd Carolyn Wagamon cook1ng the meal and takmg care of three year old tr1plets Arn1e told us that when we got to Salt Lake C1ty to be sure to go to the auto races because Gene Ver Steeg was dr1v1ng an Offenhauser 1n the f1rst race H easlly won the race by f1ve laps Also on the program was daredev1lR1chard Dearmger who spec1al1zes 1n roll1ng old cars Wh1le talklng to them after the race they told us that they owed the1r success to the1r dr1v1ng exper1ence wh1le golng to Lynnv1lle H1gh School We neared the end of our Journey and started back to Lynnv1lle When we got there we found that Mrs James Sparks had Just been elected the f1rst lady mayor of Lynnv1lle Thls completed our search for the Semors of '56 and we all agreed that our tr1p was a pleasant one 0 , . . , . . .
