Junior High Girls, Basketball Team FRONT ROW: L. to Rg R. Beason, C. Vos, C. Dobbs M. Van Zante, BACK ROW: L. to R. Coach Becker, M. Sparks P. Stewart, S. Willemsen K. Nelson. A hard-working junior -high girls' basketball team battled their way through the county tournament to win the runners-up trophy. Kay Nelson, an eighth grader, playing forward on the junior high team, was also asubstitute on the high school team. Kay has a good eye for the basket. Roberta Beason, an eighth grader, and out forward, had proved herself valuable in some of our close ball garnei. She had a good scoring record during the season. Sharon Willemsen, eighth grader, has done a fine job in the guard court as post guard. Although Carolyn Vos, eighth grader, is small, she is fast in guarding and can rebound and l'eC3Pture the ball well. Colleen Dobbs, also an eighth grader and guard, is extremely fast. Coll-een though lacking experience now, will become a valuable player. A lot of credit goes to our post forward, Pheryl Stewart, for her ball handling in the junior high tournament. As high scorer, she helped bring the team to the final game. Pheryl has also played good ball as forward on the high school team all season. Pheryl will certainly be seen on the high school team next year. Maida Sparks and Marcella Van Zante were our reserves. Although they didn't get much chance to Play, they did a good job when they were in the game. Although the junior-high boys were eliminated in the first round of the county tournament, losing to Monroe by a score of 39-18, they showed a great deal of improvement individually and as a team. Bob Lewis, eighth grade center, was one of our best rebounders and a high scorer. Bryce Gause, eighth grade guard, proved his worth in spite of his inexperience. Jerry Parrot, a seventh grader who played guard with Bryce, was a good fast rebounder. Carl James, seventh grade forward, handled the ball with the ease of someone who has had experience. Cornie Conn, seventh grade forward and a steady ball handler, did a good gob against a tall Monroe team. Melvin Harthoorn, although not a starter on the first team, went into the game in the third quarter and made four points. Nm-man Van Manen, another reserve, was a great help in rebounding because of his height. 28
