Efrark ln the past thre years Enghsh H1gh had a cons1derably good track team and many of the graduatmg class of 1954 have been w1th the team for three years 1 e George Durfee Kenny Barr Bob Mort1mer Norm Muller and Lloyd O Br1en Track IS d1v1ded 1nto two seasons of the year The f1rst meet starts 1n De cember for the 1ndoor track season and 1n early Apr1l for the outdoor season ln 1954 the 1ndoor track team f1n1shed the season w1th a record of two de feats and one v1ctory los1ng to An dover Academy at Andover and to Lowell H1gh School at Lowell then w1nn1ng over Lawrence H1gh School at Andover The outdoor season IS sure to br1ng some S1111 compet1t1on for the Bull dogs but we feel we learned a lot from our 1ndoor meets and hope to make a better showmg when the hot sun h1ts our backs Try1ng for a b1g outdoor season are Ted Hart Bob Mort1mer fohnny Mur phy Leo Sears Bob Caldwell D1ck Earp Norm Muller Bruce Iohnson Ed Whyte I1m DeFe11ce Ed Lovely Ztp McGlo1n B1l1Wh1te B1l1y Coffey D1ck Arena D1ck Hor Ph1l Lavo1e Herb Tufts Frank P1erce Bruce Reeves 11m Marstan and the elected co capta1ns George Durfee and Lloyd O Br1en The spr1nts w1ll have Bob Mort1mer Bob Caldwell D1ck Earp Ted Hart and Lloyd OBr1en The long runs Norm Muller 11m DeFel1ce Ed Whyte and Iohnny Murphy the hurdles B1lly Cof fey B111 Wh1te and Ed Lovely Our re lay team w1l1 be bu1lt around Z1p McGlo1n George Durfee Ted Hart Bruce lohnson and Lloyd O Br1en Lloyd O Br1en Qfaakvthall Iust three years ago the Iayvee bas ketball squad topped the Essex Coun ty 1un1or Vars1ty basketball crown MUIIO Carrabba B1ll Carroll Fran Cooney Sleepy Gallagher lack Kea veny and Bern1e Ryb1nsk1 helped the l1ttle pup sweep 13 w1ns 1n 14 league starts to boast of an overall record of 22 wlns and 1 loss The next season 52 53 saw Sleepy p1ay1ng great ball for the var Sl1Y The pup seemed a hkely prospect for Tech Tourney w1th 1ts 16 and 3 record but the 1nv1tat1on never came Thls season certa1nly was an excel lent one The pup eas1ly won 65X of 11S games to quallfy for an 1nv1tat1on to Tech Tourney although storm clouds had formed 1n the pre season when C a p t a 1 n Sleepy Gallagher broke h1s arm dur1ng a scr1mmage Even w1th h1s r1ght arm 1n a cast Sleepy pract1sed every afternoon w1th the squad developmg h1s left handed shots Although Sleepy spent the n1ght cheermg from the bench wh1le the pup battled Peabody 1n the open 1ng game of the Essex County League Roger Alley the h1gh scor1ng forward Lefty OBr1en the 54 55 capta1n B111 Carroll 1n h1s capta1ns spot at guard Sonny Long and Art F1319 the Cousy of the court and center B1ch1e Marks all comb1ned teamwork and Splfll to QIVG the pup an easy v1ctory From then on Engl1sh became one of the greatest threats 1n the league Boger Alley who had the best dr1ve shot 1n the league led the scor1ng attack and after Sleepy made h1s debut 1n the Beverly game he steered the back court the rest of the season ably ass1sted by Sonny Long B111 Carroll and Art F1ste Tall lanky R1ch1e Marks d1d an excellent Job of d1rect1ng traff1c from the p1vot and collected many of the rebounds Lefty O Br1en was kept busy up front w1th rebounds and constantly dazzled the crowd w1th some beaut1ful shots Marlo Carrabba and Bern1e By b1nsk1 gave plenty of ass1stance 1n the center spot wh11e Iack Keaveny d1d 1US1lCe to he scrappy pup under the boards The most exc1t1ng game of the season was the second contest w1th league 1ead1ng Salem At the half the pup was down 10 polnts and at the end of the th1rd per1od the pup tra1led by 11 But the f1ne cOach1ng of Mr Levy plus the dr1v1ng Splfll of the pup came through n the fourth per1od w1th deter m1ned Enghsh collect ng 21 ta111es to beat the W11ChGS 59 54 Peter Tob1n Q ' C 1 1 ' 1 - -1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 - - - 11 - 11 - 1 1 1 1 1 1 - ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 - 1 ' 1 . . . , .
