The second and fourth Wednesdays of the months lanuary to Apr1l are the sp cial days for the Yearbook Staff meetings On these glorious days all members of the staff rush to Room 1l2 as 1f their lives depended on getting there lf one were to poke his nose into 112 he she or 1t would see co editors Betty Chaggaris and Carleton Varney expla1n1ng what has to be done and what should not be done M ss Donovan is probably sitting near by keepmg a close Watch on the staff members Perhaps you may ask who compose the sen or staff? Well theres Connie Kangis who 1S usually kibitzing about material with ludi Hor Then there is Phil Lev1ne who IS trying to cut off the authors names from the manuscripts so that all material may be read anony mously Behind Phil IS loanne Earle who 1S always anxious to read mater 1al after she has finished chatting with cheerful Carolyn Larson who has not lost her omph even though she has had many mishaps this year Frances Moriarty Ann Richardson and Marilyn Brenner go about their business 1n a quiet dignified manner Talk less and do more IS their motto The quiet man Stanley Kaivas has done an excellent Job as art editor Class secretary Mary lane Eagan with her flashing flash bulbs 1S photography editor All in all the Yearbook Staff under the direction of our advisor Miss Alice L Donovan worked tirelessly on be half of the senior class to make this Yearbook a success' We hope that you like it Ph1l1p Levine annual flunm Smnrtg The National Honor Society 1S an or ganization with over 2000 chapters scattered throughout the Un1ted States in 1922 and in 1925 English High School received charter ii:146 lts em blem the keystone and flaming torch symbolizes what the organization re presents Upon the base of the key stone are the letters C S L and S which stand for the cardinal ideas of the club Character Scholarship Lead ership and SSTVICG As all strong structures have a firm base so has this organization Char acter 1S the combination of common v1rtues which are conduc1ve to right eousness Scholarship is the ability to use ones 1ntell1gence to further man kind s desire to acquire the truth Lead ership 1S a qual1ty which enables an 1nd1v1dual to help others toward the proper goal Service 1S the willingness to assist p ople and to cooperate with them when necess1ty calls for action The flaming torch IS the emblem of the clubs purpose to bear forward the searching light of truth so that others may follow 1n this l1ght During the past few years the na tional committee has offered compet1 tive scholarships which are awarded to those who excel in an examination the top 25 X of the members preparing for college are el1g1ble to take this test The National Honor Society grew out of a desire on the part of educators to recognize and to encourage superior scholarship and to promote the ideals of citizenship The four basic qualities 1nd1cated on the emblem were decided upon as the requisites for membership Students qualifying accord ng to these standards are el1g1ble for membership at the end of the second quarter of the Junior year Because of national regu lations the number of those selected IS limited and many Worthy candidates have to WG11 to be admitted until their senior year Our school offers no greater honor than membership in the National Honor Society consequently those of the class of 54 who have ach eved this d1st1nct1on should remind themselves to take account of stock now and then and decide whether they are living up to the 1deals of the So ciety lohn Arena ' 1 I .
