Although basketball took the spotl1ght dur1ng the w1nter our track team also made a excellent showxng Led by Capta1n Charl1e Crowley the team won three meets and placed 1n all but one Bob Walf1eld and RICO Mongell1 along wlth the relay team were 1nv1ted to the Heptagonal meet at Boston Gardens Seven members of the squad were fortunate enough to be 1nv1ted to the Bowdo1n College meet 1n Ma1ne These were Ernest Roney George Stanger Bob Walfreld Fran McMahan Charlre Crowley Rrco Mongello and Earle Bohanon lt 1S a great honor to recerve ar1 1nv1tat1or1 to both of these meets rn wh1ch are represented the best 1n schoolboy track Earle Bohanon who IS cons1dered the top mrler 1n the state covered the mrle run for Engl1sh Charl1e Crowley ran the 1000 Bob Walf1eld was the 600 man Fred George and Ern1e Roney took the 300 yard dut1es and RICO Mongello our best dash man has earned for h1mself the reputat1on of berng the fastest man 1n the state Our relay team one of the fmest rn many years was made up of Charlre Crowley Fred George Ftrco Mongello Bob Walf1eld Fran McMahn and Ern1e Roney George Stanger and Al Fl1nt were our h1gh Jumpers Preston LeBlanc heaved the shot put wrth Ahnqurst and Hall runnmg the hurdles All 1n all the team had a successful season and was a Cfedll to Engl1sh They beat Lowell Lawrence and Andover The team placed th1rd rn the state meet and 1n the Bowdom meet They also placed rn the Northeastern Y M C A ar1d Greater Boston lnterscholastlc meets Unfortunately the team was defeated by Classrcal Aga1n 1n baseball Engl1sh can look forward to another great team Led by co captams Iack1e N1han and Fred George the team IS heavy we1ght w1th talent Fred George and Bob Wartt Wlll share the catchmg dutres Al Nocella Ed Waldron Edd1e Eryson Ralph Budreau Cl1ff Thrbodeau and V1n Sweetland compose the p1tch1ng staff The mfreld w1ll be made up of Lou Bak1s Ray Mclvlanus Fred Coukos Iackre Nrhan Leon Wescott B111 Manc1nell1 Ioe Modugno and Al Doyle I1m Coukos Horace Durkee and Bob Gallagher w1ll handle the outfreld Both 1n h1tt1ng and f1eld1ng our team 1S supenor Many a great battle w1ll be remembered by the class of 49 who are 1ndeed fortunate to have Fred George Ed Eryson Iack1e Nrhan Iohn Kutlowskr Leon Wescott and Drck Chandler as members of the1r class They rndeed add honor to thelr class The schedule for 1949 Apr1l Andover fawayl Apr1l Haverh1ll fhomel Aprrl Gloucester Cawayl Apr1l 2 Peabody lawayl Apr1l 2 Lawrence fhomel May Salem fawayl May Beverly fawayl May Haverh1ll fawayl May Gloucester Chomel May Peabody fhomel May Lawrence Cawayl May Salem fhome n1ghtD May Class1cal lhome rughtl une Beverly fhomel Iune Class1cal faway mghtl Last year a golf team coached by Mr Dante Palombo was added to the sports currlculum here at Engl1sh The boys almost w1thout any support from the students went ahead and fought the1r way 1nto the champ1onsh1p of the North Shore Str1v1ng to w1n the state champ1onsh1p they were defeated ln the S9I1'11 f1nals Th1s year under the leadersh1p of T1m Curt1n and Paul 38 THE R D AND GRAY '13 .19 . Goodridge the team hopes to give another championshtp to English These boys play iust as hard for English at golf as the boys on the football and basketball teams Every member of English should get behind these boys and give them the support they deserve They are fighting for English You fight for them The team is made up of three pairs with seven alternates Paul Goodridge Fred Cwllbert Tim Curtin Bay Bond Bill Butler Tom Snowden Alternates are lim McGoldr1ck Pete Dernier Denny Palmer Fran Crist Mike Brienzo and Neil Therrien The schedule for l949 Revere Saugus Peabody St lohn s Classical Swampscott Salem Winthrop Although hockey has not officially be ome one of Englishs sports it is only fair to remember the boys of 49 who played hard hockey without any support from their s hool that the sport they love could become part of English At the completion of the North Shore Sports Center eager sophomores Juniors and seniors led by Hap Winslow began to raise funds for hockey equip ment They were so successful that almost S200 was raised and used to buy and Friday under the direction ot Herb Pickering and Bob Coombs these boys managed to make up the first organized English hockey team Many boys who will not have a chance to play next year worked hard so that they might at least have the honor of introducing hockey to English The class of 49 should be indeed proud of these boys who showed that they too were a part of English lt is the sincere hope of each boy that hockey will take its place in English sports May the class of 49 always remember Ray Bond Mike Brienzo Neil Therrien Ioe Martin Stewie Mclnnis Pete Bonaface Hap Winslow Tykie Ku hulls Bill Huggins Tom Grady Steve Kaufman Dick Poor Norm Pallan Bob Gorman Bob Chandler Bill Stevens lohn Houghton Herb Ectman Bob Trenholm Bob Amero Gerry Goldstein Bill Butler Preston Stacey Dan Collins a group of fine fellows truly possessed with the Splfll of English The class of 49 is indeed fortunate to have fared so well in sports for they produced the greatest teams ever' Balph Winslow 1950 'lrtE RED AND GRAY 39 c ' . pants, stockings, and shin guards.
